About the author

Arnošt Lustig (born 21 December 1926 in Prague) is a renowned Czech Jewish author of novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays whose works have often involved the Holocaust.

As a Jewish boy in Czechoslovakia during World War II, he was sent in 1942 to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, from where he was later transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, followed by time in the Buchenwald concentration camp. In 1945, he escaped from a train carrying him to the Dachau concentration camp when the engine was mistakenly destroyed by an American fighter-bomber. He returned to Prague in time to take part in the May 1945 anti-Nazi uprising.

After the war, he studied journalism at Charles University in Prague and then worked for a number of years at Radio Prague. He worked as a journalist in Israel at the time of its War of Independence where he met his future wife, who at the time was a volunteer with the Haganah. He was one of the major critics of the Communist regime in June 1967 at the 4th Writers Conference, and gave up his membership in the Communist Party after the 1967 Middle East war, to protest his government's breaking of relations with Israel. However, following the Soviet-led invasion that ended the Prague Spring in 1968, he left the country, first to Israel, then Yugoslavia and later in 1970 to the United States. After the fall of eastern European communism in 1989, he divided his time between Prague and Washington DC, where he continued to teach at the American University. After his retirement from the American University in 2003, he became a full-time resident of Prague. He was given an apartment in the Prague Castle by then President Václav Havel and honored for his contributions to Czech culture on his 80th birthday in 2006. In 2008, Lustig became the eighth recipient of the Franz Kafka Prize. [1]

Lustig is married to the former Vera Weislitzová (1927), daughter of a furniture maker from Ostrava who was also imprisoned in the Terezín concentration camp. Unlike her parents, she was not deported to Auschwitz. She wrote of her family's fate during the Holocaust in the collection of poems entitled "Daughter of Olga and Leo." They have two children, Josef (1950) and Eva (1956).

His most renowned books are A Prayer For Katerina Horowitzowa (published and nominated for a National book award in 1974), Dita Saxová (1979), Night and Hope (1985), and Lovely Green Eyes (2004). Dita Saxová and Night and Hope have been filmed.

This is taken from the diary of a young 17 year old girl named Perla. She became a prostitute while in a Jewish ghetto in order to survive. Much of the story is about her indifference to it. The other part of the story is about Ludmilla, a friend of Perla's, who is innocent in sexual matters and knows that she is destined for Auschwitz. I've read several of Lustig's books and this is probably my least favorite.

Nemilovaná je kniha, se kterou jsem prožila zhruba tři týdny. Jedná se o knihu, jejíž čtení není rozhodně jednoduché. A teď nemluvím o tom, jak je napsaná. Samotné téma knihy je náročné.
Dozvíme se příběh Perly, sedmnáctileté dívky, ze které se v koncentračním táboru stává prostitutka.
Příběh Perly pro mě byl náročný hlavně kvůli životním osudům lidí, kteří jsou v knize popisováni, protože i když možná neexistovaly přímo postavy popsané v Nemilované, tak jiní lidé si těmi hrůzami prošli. Proto to pro mě bylo místy náročné čtení.
Nemilovaná určitě není kniha, kde by se neustále něco dělo. Je to hlavní psychologická kniha. Neříkám že tam není žádný děj, ale jeho tam málo a spíš se kniha soustřeďuje na myšlenkové pochody hlavní hrdinky.
I když se mi příběh Perly velmi líbil, měla jsem s ním problém. Během čtení jsem byla několikrát velmi zmatená. Zmatená, protože autor často přeskakoval v čase bez předchozího upozornění. Chápu, že je kniha napsaná formou deníku, ale přesto mě to ve čtení rušilo a trochu mi to kazilo celkový dojem z knihy.
Z toho důvodu jsem se dlouho rozhodovala, jaké hodnocení knize dám. Ale kvůli síle příběhu Perly, kvůli myšlenkám, které mě často dostaly, jsem se rozhodla pro čtyři hvězdičky.

Ha jól emlékszem, akkor Lustig egyetlen magyar fordításáról tudok, valami novellagyűjteményben jelent meg egy (több?) írása s az is valamelyik újvidéki, kárpátaljai újság kiadásában látott napvilágot. Persze ehhez sem volt szerencsém, csak olvastam róla. Kár, hogy nem fordítják magyarra, mert jól ír.
Ez a könyv valamiért folyton Anne Frankot juttatja eszembe, pedig csak a zsidóságuk és a pusztulásuk közös, de mégis. Perla Sara prostituált lesz a mintalágerben, mert valahogy túl kellene élni azt, hogy létezik. Az ő tépelődéseit, elmélkedéseit, emlékeit tartalmazza ez a rövid naplóregény, mindent, mi egy 17 éves, még gyerek, de már felnőtt fejében megfordulhat úgy és akkor, hogy tudja, nemsokára biztosan meghal, noha a miért mindmáig teljességgel felfoghatatlan.
Holokausztregény, pont olyan, mint a többiek és természetesen teljesen más. Érdemes elolvasni. Hátha egyszer majd magyarul is napvilágot lát.

Lowkey mid, četla jsem do školy a to asi hodně vysvětluje, od Lustiga jsem toho nečetla mlc, spíš jen úryvky ale docela to odpovídá jeho stylu co spousta lidí popisuje, bez děje a všechno se stane v posledních pár stranách. Dalo se to ale znovu nech nečetla.
