Dylan’s Candy Bar in Chicago is (I’m assuming it’s not reopening so, was, RIP) one of the most fun stores I’ve ever been to, and I wanted to know more and saw there was a book so I ordered it on a thrift site. Written in 2010 it’s definitely dated for 2022 standards. There’s a lot of frivolous mention of weight/fat/slenderizing stuff in the lifestyle tidbits that didn’t sit well. The quizzes are immature. I had DCB notecards that I treasured, doling them out slowly, and recognized several of the same pictures in this book. The photos are so great, I want an entire gallery of candy prints! I liked the background of Dylan and of the candies, holidays, etc that she mentions. Overall I think because of the dated style of some of the material this was just an ok read but the history and photos bumped it up. A worthwhile read to flip through if you come across it and have ever been to a Dylans.
I LOVED Dylan’s Candy Bar, and was so sad when it closed in Chicago. It was fun to look through this book, and read about Dylan Lauren’s obvious love of candy (she might be the only person that loves candy more than me!). It was a bit dated, and a little hokey, but definitely nostalgic.
The coffee book merges fashion, art, and pop culture with candy. This is about how the author sees candy and how the world can be made with candy. It shows art made out of candy, gifts made out of candy, celebrating holidays with tabletops and centerpieces of candy, and fashion week dresses made from candy.
It’s easy to be happy when you look through this gorgeous book because the photography is insane. This book is not just about candy and living a sweet life about happiness; It’s about the beauty and aesthetics of confections. The author hand-selected five hundred candies from every season (out of seven thousand candies worldwide) to showcase candy's true beauty.
She wrote: “Wouldn't it be wonderful to be a kid forever, to just live in the moment to not think about work or worries or calories or cavities? Eating candy can help you do that. If you're depressed, bored, frustrated, or frazzled, I swear it is the savior and agent and antidote to what ails you.” Then you said, “For me, candy provides a magical escape back to my past, back to a simpler time when life was all sweet and stress-free.”
I found out about this book through a feature in the October issue of BHG magazine, where there was a little profile and a cute idea for making gummy candy skewers. I loved that idea so I checked out this book but sadly, that was about the only cute idea in it. The rest of it was really disappointing and filled with silliness. I was hoping that a book like this would give some neat, sophisticated ideas for using candy in decorating or gifts but the crafting ideas were really cheesy and not something I would ever replicate.
"Candy is Magic! Candy is imagination! Candy is art! Candy is fashion! Candy is joy! Candy is memories!"
This amazing book includes every candy imaginable--and also includes candy fashion, and candy decor. The pictures are fun and vibrant and the ideas to decorate with candy are fabulous. Lauren's book includes ideas and decor for baby showers, birthday parties, weddings, and every "special" holiday. It covers recipes for scrumptious chocolatey hot chocolate. Colorful and Yummy... especially if you are a candy lover! Lanee
I gave this 4 stars for the photography alone. It's a really beautiful book, and you can't help but smile when looking at all that gorgeous candy. She also features lots of cute ideas for holidays, showers, weddings, etc that are kind of different but not that hard to put together.
I didn't care at all about her 'passion for candy' and the autobiographical stuff is pretty much throw-away. She had a very typical life for the daughter of a fashion mogul; I just couldn't get any interest. But borrow this for the recipes, illustrations and delcious cocktails - they're well worth it!
I love all the pictures in this... lucky her for being the daughter of the one & only Ralph Lauren... of course she has the means to make my dream come true... establishing a candy empire... :( ... Extra money also means Duke University...
The candy just leapt off the page. Dylan Lauren's love of candy is absolutely evident in this book. I loved the use of candy in all the occasions that make a day special. The photography was so vibrant and bold.
There's nothing wrong with this book, it's just not what I was quite expecting. Somehow, I was expecting more of a cookbook. What the book is happens to be beautiful book all about manufactured candy. It's filled with beautiful photos and all sorts of candy related trivia, ideas, and projects.
