The dangerously handsome stranger had haunted Monica's nights with dreams of intoxicating passion. Though the innocent beauty had seen him for only a moment, his glittering black eyes had boldly caressed her, sending ripples of desire browsing through her veins. Then he appeared in the shadows of her terrace, and she knew she should scream in alarm. A true bodice ripper in all its glory… 1840s, San Francisco area, France and Morocco. Young and very beautiful Monica lives with her rich evil stepfather and stepbrother on a ranch in the Sonoma Valley. She’s haunted by erotic dreams of intoxicating passion with a dangerous and handsome man. Then he appears on her balcony!

Steven Hawke has seen Monica from afar .., can’t forget her, and fantasizes about possessing her. He’s rich.. a self made man, now a shipping merchant importing goods from France. Plus he has women in his beds constantly. Lots of adventure, violence, tragedy follow in this unbelievable story as mysteries are solved about her long absent mother, and his younger brother.

There a few non consensual times in the beginning of the story, even though both are instantly attracted to each other. There’s swoon worthy prose.. some purple.. throughout:

“She walked on a moonbeam, exposing her wings to the air, soaring and before her arose black twinkling eyes, arms held out to her … A thousands suns were pouring through the open windows into her soul. She flamed with passion when his lips, moving with such gentleness, swept from her own, down her throat, down …. ah Cherie, precious jewel. I want to fill you with honey.”

The author’s creative use of Monica’s dreams and nightmares throughout the story add to its spice. This slow to get started ripper speeds up at the end to a sweet HEA. Don’t pass it up if you find it at a used bookstore, there’s only this edition, and it’s a bit pricey at AbeBooks.

Splendid bodice ripper cover by the legendary artist Robert McGinnis. 🔥❤️
