Donna Hay, Australia's bestselling, favourite and most trusted cook, brings you one of her most beautiful books yet: Modern Baking, with over 250 mouthwatering recipes for cakes, biscuits and all kinds of divinely delicious sweet treats.
I find there's something truly enchanting about baking. From the way ingredients change as they're whisked and whipped, to the joy that a warm slice of cake can bring - it's always been my first love in the kitchen. Even though I'm a classics girl at heart, I'm forever adding on-trend twists to my sweet recipes and I want to share them with you. This book is what I like to think of as my modern baking bible. Inside are more than 250 recipes - my all-time favourite essentials, plus some super-smart shortcuts for when life gets crazy busy. I've also included plenty of better-for-you treats, made with wholesome raw ingredients, for a touch of balance. Be it chewy cookies, the fudgiest brownies, dreamy meringue or creamy iced desserts, let these modern sweets bring a little magic into your kitchen.

Donna Hay is my girl. I have piles of her (now sadly defunct) magazines, a few of her cookbooks, and a whole bunch of her recipes bookmarked - and frequently made - online. She’s my go-to, I recommend her so often, as her recipes are accessible and achievable, as well as bloody delicious.
I was gifted with two - TWO!! - of her amazing cookbooks for Christmas, bringing my tally to five. I sat down this morning for an hour or two and just pored over this beauty. It is classic Donna Hay - the photography is instantly recognisable, and there are SO MANY THINGS I WANT TO MAKE. I don’t know where to start.
My one (tiny) complaint is that some of the equipment needed is, on occasion, a bit eyebrow-raising and out-of-touch with the average home cook. Eight 10cm round heavy-based ovenproof skillets? Really? I can guarantee that almost nobody has eight identical skillets this home. But if you do ... can we be friends? Cos I really want to bake those skillet cookies!
I wanted to give this a higher rating, but I honestly can't. I had high hopes for this book. Almost all of the recipes call for something "store-bought", such as ice cream or dulce de leche. It felt like I was looking through a Kraft recipe, with so few items that are actually made from scratch. Many of the recipes call for obscure and expensive items that just don't make sense when you're buying so many ingredients premade, and it felt overly pretentious, like these recipes were dreamt up by a bored middle-aged white woman with too much time and disposable income. The ingredients she does call for get used in so many recipes that it gets exhausting. I don't need to see 20+ recipes with passionfruit or rhubarb. The only thing I liked was that I could use a few of the ideas in the book for my own creations, made from scratch.
It is organised by theme and each chapter has some quick recipes, some raw food ones as well as some baking. While the photography is opulent, the recipes do not seem complex. I initially struggled with this book because of the design (it seems to be targeting people who have a setting or a character approach). It is an instance where persisting was worthwhile (and I don't always think you should have to persist), and there are quite a few recipes I plan to try out.
Lovely book... looking forward to using it. When you do use is in Canada be sure to use cake/pastry flour and 82% butter fat butter and whole milk. Tablespoon measurements may also be different from North American tablespoon measurements.
Tempting and tantalising, mouth watering and lip smacking, and that is just from looking at the photos! 😅 Always wonderful presentation and photography in Donna Hay's books. Plenty of inspiration and easy to follow recipes.
I love this baking book, It is filled with delicious baking ideas. The only problem I had with it was getting the right ingredients. I would definitely recommend this to home bakers!!!!!
I love the pictures and the overall quality of the book. The recipes are easy to understand even though some are long. I have used this book several times for different recipes and still love it.
I have pinned so many of Donna Hay’s recipes on Pinterest and when I found out she is putting together a baking book, I was all over it. Pre order and everything. I know. I actually bought a physical book!
And it is the best. I am a huge baker and this book not only has the classic recipes with a bit of a twist but also a whole section after each one with healthy recipes and quick recipes!! It’s so good. Check it out of the library if you can, or buy it.
