गिरीश कुबेरांच्या तेल इतिहासाच्या मालिके मधील हे पहिले पुस्तक. तेल कधी व कसे सापडले त्या नंतर त्या तेलामुळे औद्योगिक क्रांती कशी झाली व जागतिक राजकारण कसे घडले ह्या बद्दलचा सर्व इतिहास ह्या पुस्तकात आहे. तेलाचा हक्क मिळवण्यासाठी आधी उद्योजकांची आणि मग बलाढ्य देशांची झालेली चढाओढ आपणास ह्यात पाहायला मिळते. भारत कसा ह्या शर्यतीत आला आणि त्यामागे कोणाचा वाटा होता हेपण आपल्याला कळते. लेखकाने परिपूर्ण अभ्यास करून लिहलेले हे पुस्तक अर्थशास्त्र, जागतिक व भौगोलिक राजकारण हे विषय आवडणाऱ्यांनी जरूर वाचावे.

तेल हा आंतरराष्ट्रीय राजकारणात अतिशय ज्वलंत विषय आहे, हे सगळ्यांनाच ठाऊक आहे. पण त्याची सूत्रबद्धपणे संगती लावणे सगळ्यांनाच जमते असे नाही. हे काम गिरीश कुबेरांनी अतिशय उत्कृष्टपणे केले आहे. तेलाच्या शोधापासून ते आताच्या इराक युद्धपर्यंत, तेलाने कसे भल्याभल्याना नाचवले हे पद्धतशीरपणे पुस्तकांत मांडण्यात आले आहे. तेल, त्याचा उगम, विकास, कंपन्यांची मक्तेदारी, अरब जग आणि त्यांचे मूर्ख,लोभी राजकारणी यांचा इतिहास कळल्यावर आजच्या जगाकडे बघण्याचा एक डोळस दृष्टिकोन मिळतो. आजकाल आपण बऱ्याच बातम्या बघतो, पण घटनाक्रम आणि त्या मागची कारण पटकन उमजत नाही. हे पुस्तक वाचल्यानंतर अरब जगामध्ये घडण्याच्या गोष्टींची आणि आंतरराष्ट्रीय राजकारणाची कारणीमिमांसा करणे सोपे होईल. घडणाऱ्या घटनांमागची कारणे, जी पटकन उजेडात येत नाही, ती समजून घेता येतील.

मी वाचलेली आवृत्ती 2016 मधली आहे, तरी तिच्यात 2006 नंतरच्या एकाही घटनेचा उल्लेख नाही. 2006 ते 2018 या कालावधीत, सौदी तेल विहिरींमधून बरेच तेल वाहून गेले असल्याने, नवीन आवृत्ती मध्ये या 12 वर्षांमधल्या घटनांवरच एखाद प्रकरण टाकायला काहीच हरकत नाही.

Over all, this is a well researched and well presented book. Worth a read.

Written like a story, this book is a history of last 150 years of human civilization rather than only the oil industry. It is because, as one will come to know after reading, all the major events that took place during this time, are linked with a thirst for oil or its scarcity. In one way or another, oil has played a major role in the geographic, economic, political and social condition of the world we live in today.

It is quite an engaging read, hard to keep down once you set off. Book will be especially liked by Marathi readers, as the author has made use of many proverbs and interesting expressions.

I wish that another part of this book gets published, which will continue this dramatic tale after the year 2006.

अमेरीकेने वर्ल्ड पाॅवर होण्यासाठी काय काय ‘करामती’ केल्यायत हे गिरीष कुबेरांनी अगदी सविस्तरपणे मांडलंय. प्रत्येक चॅप्टर बरोबर हे पुस्तक अधिकाधिक इन्टरेस्टींग होत जातं. पाश्चात्य देश, चीन, जपान कसे पुढे गेले आणि भारत इतकी वर्ष विकसनशीलच का राहिलाय ह्याच उत्तर शोधणारं आणि प्रखर-जहाल वास्तव मांडणारं एक अफलातून पुस्तक!

Very well written book. The book very nicely covers the historical and subsequent geo-political developments of oil, right from the discovery until now.
I also liked that the book always ensures to mention India's stance in this sector. It covers the impact of global oil/gas supply-demand and consequential political repercussions on us.
Strongly recommended for Marathi readers.

It's my first serious Marathi Book covering a modern world topic. The research is thorough and the language is entertaining. Nothing blows your mind though. It was fun to read the (mis)adventures of the oil companies and then see their names on the gas stations. It also puts the relationship between US and the Arabic countries in context.

This is a good read to understand how countries, continents, their natural resources, industrialization, development/ no-development, finance are connected together due to OIL. Good flow of chapters.
