Fanny Burney

Rate this book
The first comprehensive critical study of the work of Fanny Burney. Living in a world where male supremacy was unchallenged, Burney pioneered the 'women's novel' by presenting a distinctively female perspective in English fiction. The author focuses on Burney's treatment of women's problems of survival and identity in an indifferent and hostile society.

This book is a perfect primer for providing basic information on Frances Burney (1752-1840), her works, and the cultural context in which she wrote. Chapters are divided as follows: (1) Fanny Burney’s Life, (2) Fanny Burney’s Heroines, (3) Evelina, (4) Cecilia, (5) Camilla, (6) The Wanderer, (7) Journals and Plays, (8) Conclusion. For any reader wanting to flesh out the details of Burney’s work and her life, this slim book by Judy Simons is a perfect place to start.
