When my twin brother dies, I return home knowing life will never be the same. I just didn’t expect to die in a supernatural car crash on my way there. Plot twist: I’m not actually dead-dead, and I have no idea why.
As if things aren't confusing enough, my late brother’s bad-tempered and sinfully attractive best friend finds me in the woods in all my recently deceased glory.
He claims that half of my hometown are actually monsters; that people like he and my brother exist to keep them in line, and--cherry on top of this crap sundae--my brother didn't die in an accident.
He was murdered.
Now it's up to me and his brooding best friend to find answers before whoever, or whatever, killed my brother cuts the last branch off my family tree and sends me into the afterlife--permanently.

I love the premises for this series and like most, I love a kick butt sassy, smart mouthed heroine. I'm not a prude when it comes to language by any means but I think like most things, there is a time and place for a well placed curse and this book has an excessive amount of them. Like, so over the top it is almost distracting and draws away from the story, which is too bad because like I said, this has a promising premises.
I'm debating whether or not to continue the series. I'm hoping the language will calm down because I think you can show sassy and tough without every other word coming out of her mouth being an f-bomb, you would think with two authors, they could come up with another way to express anger or sarcasm without all the language.

With a sassy, constantly hungry, heroine and a sexy but grumpy hero, Reaper's Blood was an amazing and addictive read. An urban fantasy with a slow burn romance thrown in... what more could I ask for.
Tragic news has brought Salem Kaine back to town after 4 years away. Upon returning, due to her love of food, she dies. And her dormant supernatural gene gets activated and violá, she's alive again! But she's no longer just a human. She is a Reaper. A female one at that. She is a part of a society that is belongs just to the male species. The one person to find her at her worst and break the news of her new lifestyle is super sexy Alexander Graham Graves, III, best friend to Shepard (Salem's brother that died) and fellow Grimm Reaper. She is introduced to the whole new part of her world and many people close to her are supernaturals. Salem is an anomaly and it's best if she is kept as a secret until she gets to the bottom of her brother's death.
Salem is my spirit animal. She is so freaking hilarious and crazy. I LOVE HER!!! She is newly into her powers yet you can see that she is super powerful. Who doesn't love a heroine like that?! Her banter with Graves made me constantly crack up. They make the ultimate pair. They give off hate-ish vibes but they sexual tension is ever present and their lustiness towards each other basically leaks out of them. Tamsin, Salem's best friend, was the best supporting character. Their antics were hilarious especially the lies Tamsin came up with.
I did not want this book to end. It was too short. I liked blinked and it was done. Need more! March is so far away!

I enjoy Hollie Jackson, so I decided to grab Reaper’s Blood on audio. This is a snarky first in the Grimm Brotherhood urban fantasy series featuring Salem Kaine.
Salem has no filter, thinks Hostess cupcakes are a food group and finds trouble. On her way into her hometown she swerves to avoid an animal and dies. Only she comes back as a Reaper. Or at least that is what Alexander Graham Graves, III, her brother’s best friend tell her. He is also a reaper.
Turns out the town Salem grew up in is a haven for all types of supernatural. Salem is stunned, but wants to keep what she is a secret so she can investigate her brother’s murder. She enlists Graves and her best friend, Tamsin who turns out to be a succubus.
The story delivers a little romance, a murder-mystery and trouble when the town council gets involved. Over the top humor, snark and danger await you.
Salem made me laugh, but also annoyed me. She says and acts how she thinks which gets her into trouble. Her personality at times is over the top, but there is room for growth and her instincts were good.
The chemistry between Salem and Graves is sizzling and looks like their relationship will be an overall ARC, along with mysteries and Salem’s unique skill set. Is she a reaper or more?

Hmm, I'm on the fence for this one...
The plot is good, the characters are fun and the setting is great. So what's the problem? Salem... I just really don't like her at all :(
You can have a snarky heroine and that's fine, or great even. Buuuuuuuut Salem is a tad overboard. It doesn't seem like there is another side to her, just the one mode, and that's a shame and in my opinion a missed opportunity.
So let's just review everything else :)
As stated the setting was good, all scenes and environments were clear and well described.
Pacing and flow were good, there was constantly something going on but without it being too much.
Graves and Tamsin felt real and believable, just like any other students you'd go to university with, well, except that they're supes ;)
Oh, and you've got to love the teensy bit excentric aunt :D
The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors and there is no sex described (if that is important to you).
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all it was enjoyable if only I liked Salem a bit more :( That said.. who knows, it might just be me ;)
If you like books with an unlikely hero(ine), some mystery and some romance, give it a go!

4,5 stars, I really loved this book, the banter between the main characters and het humor made it so good! The story is captivating and you really want to know what's going to happen!

Salem likes to eat, especially cupcakes. It's that exact love that gets her killed. Well, that and a huge animal that found its way onto the road.
She's dead but then she isn't anymore. First order of business? FIND THE CUPCAKES.
She gets caught in the act (attempting to rescue the cupcakes from her wrecked car) by none other than a grumpy guy with three first names who just so happens to be her dead brother's best friend and a reaper at that.
Salem's thrown into a world full of supernatural creatures who've been living undercover in her town for years and she has to figure out her own place among them while solving the mystery of her brother's death.
I LOOOOOOVE the vibes of this book. I couldn't help but think of Moonlight Falls (the Sims 3 neighbourhood) while reading. And the place names are so creative. My favourite is the Bitter Bean. IT'S JUST SO CUTE.
The bands mentioned are all top notch. I approve.
I love Salem and her endless eating. I feel like I'd probably die over food too, but in my case it would be my grandma's cherry pie. I'm also that person who would sooner save her books than herself if the building was on fire. I'd high five Salem but I can't do that through the screen :(
I like Graves too of course, in all his broody-ness, but the real stars of this book are crazy aunt Esme and Shep.
"Baaaaaaaad Salem." I died laughing every time. I need a blue demon sheep plushie. And an aunt who practices her shooting at midnight.
Tamsin's awesome. Feed on all the mortals girl.
I like Dom too (I blame the way he was described), typical of Salem to jump to conclusions so soon.
I didn't see the ending coming, not one bit. I should've but I didn't. After the ummm..."wake up" it was like a light bulb went off in my brain and I went "ohhhh, that's why that had to happen".
The villain...WHAT DID THEY EVER DO TO YOU? And poor lil sheep :(

Reaper’s Blood is the second book I’ve read about reapers and I think it’s my favourite one so far. I really liked the story and I couldn’t stop reading. This book was so fast paced and well written! The story is amazing and I loved the characters.
Speaking of characters, let’s start with Salem. She’s such a badass woman, and she has no filter. She’s such a funny character and I enjoyed reading about her. Graves is another interesting character and I was interested in him from the beginning! I loved that Graves’ mum has OCD, I think these tiny representations are amazing in books.
Reaper’s Blood was such a great book and I couldn’t get enough of the story and the characters. I really loved this book and it’s definitely one of my favourite books of the year so far! I cannot wait to read the sequel, Reaping Havoc!

"Listen, Morticia, you don’t just sneak up on people in the middle of the woods. That’s a good way to go and get yourself killed.”
She blinked, a smile tilting up her lips. It was the creepiest fucking thing I’d ever seen. “That’s not my name.”
I scowled at her, anger swiftly replacing my fear. “Like I give two shits, kid.”
Sorry but word for word, this is what I imagine a narcissist or abuser's thought process to be like. And she doesn't get better.
It's not cute to be a complete insecure selfish asshole, even if it ends in character growth later on. No amount of mysterious family trauma justifies this behavior in adults.

I read this because Kel Carpwrtwr's Twisted is the Crown series is one of my most favourite recent series. Sadly, this was nowhere near as good and didn't even feel like the same author, although I know this was co-wrote.
This is a light, shirt, fluffy read that was, for me, just okay.
I didn't really like the MC. She's one of those snarky types who is a bit obnoxious really and there doesn't seem to be a lot to her. But then, this isn't the sort of book with deep characterisation.
Graves is an okay love interest and they have some chemistry but I wasn't particularly engaged in it.
The plot was okay. It felt like, by the end of the book, there was the beginnings of something a bit more interesting coming, which might mean the second book is better than the first.

Food. That’s really what women spend a lot of their day thinking about. (“Ugh, two hours until lunch?” “What am I doing for dinner?”) So really, can we blame Salem for being hangry and mad about dying…and not even being able to eat her cupcakes? After all, Salem herself says she has three modes: angry, hungry, and super angry. Totally worth crawling back into the car after her Hostess cupcakes to fix at least one of those problems. Right?
Salem could totally be my BFF. She’s brash, ballsy, totally has no filter, and why would she, as she experiences several WTF moments per day on her way to Reaperdom. Speaking of… let’s just get this out of the way now.

If you love adventure, Witty banter and to be lost in a world unknown this is the book for you! Amazing! I really need the next book. These authors are amazing and I will never not say this! Please release the next one early. I loved it. Literally not a complaint at all.

DNF - Quit at 10%
I just didn't get pulled into this book. The start wasn't compelling enough to pull me into the story. I also felt the heroine, Salem, was just too snarky, and instead of humorous, came across as annoying and unrelatable, those are the kind of real life people I always avoid. A snarky heroine is hard for me to appreciate in books, as the balance has to be perfect to make it work as humorous.
At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

2 1/2 stars. A fairly typical urban fantasy. I liked the snarky female lead but she could also be annoying, particularly her drive for sweets. I like sweets as much as the next person, but this was just too over the top.

Flying down the mountain road at high speed, Salem Kaine reaches over for her purse on the car seat and searches its depths for a pack of Hostess Cupcakes she had stashed in there. Something big and furry ran from the side of the road and stopped right in front of her. The last thing she saw before top-still-down convertible flipped were red eyes staring straight at her as she didn’t even have time to scream!
She opened her eyes, wondering why there was no pain or crushed bones, only to find herself standing in a forest. A girl’s voice said she couldn’t stay there, and she spun around to face her. The girl was in an antique black lace dress, looking like Morticia on the Addams Family TV show. The girl shoved her – with freezing cold hands -- toward her burning car and told her she had to go back “before someone else claims what you have abandoned.” What did THAT mean?? She figured it out when the girl pointed to Salem’s body lying beside the car! “They’re coming!”
Salem sat up, alive again it seemed, and tried to crawl back into the burning car with its sharp metal edges – because she still wanted those cupcakes! Lucky for her, a tall handsome guy with piercing blue eyes stopped her and spoke her name right before she was about to let loose some vile language for his interrupting her! Then he said she had already missed her brother, Shep’s, funeral so why come back now? And she was ready to do some violent harm to this guy. He offered her a ride, which she refused, until he said he may have some M&M’s (because Shep had told his best friend about her chocolate weakness) and since she was being a brat about this . . . It didn’t go well.
The bottom line, if the reader can stop laughing through the first part of the book, is that Salem came back to her hometown to find out who murdered her brother. She gets help from the stranger she was ready to kill named Alexander Graham Graves, III, her brother’s best friend and a Grimm Reaper, the perfect guy to help her ease into her new supernatural role. Usually I don't let character's dictate my feelings about a book but this time Salem just takes the cake. Not sure how many ways I don't like her but attitude and all is just too much. She claims she just goes with the flow but she's a sarcastic rude unemotional mean girl (for lack of a better description). While this is a clean read the language is over the top and takes away from the story. It does have plenty of action and other characters which are much more likable. Most people wont mind the things that tear me up about Salem so expect an awesome ride as she figures out who and what she is and what happened to her brother. The writing is excellent, the story will keep you invested in the outcome and the reason I give it so many stars. I love these two authors and look forward to more of the series I just have to get past Salem and I hope I get the chance.

I’ve read all of Meg Anne’s books so I already know what her writing style is like, but Kel Carpenter is a completely new author to me and I was intrigued to see how her writing would flow alongside Meg’s and honestly, I’m impressed. They both work well as a team and they really brought this story to life, I was so invested in the story and the characters and I had no idea which direction this book would go at all. But just from reading this book alone, you can see that their writing compliments each other, I was hooked from the very beginning and even though I was unsure of what was going on at times, minutes later it would be explained within the story. I’m super excited to see what happens next because the cliffhanger that they both leave you on make you want more… I have no idea when the next book comes out, but I seriously can’t wait to get my hands on it as I know that it’s only just going to get even more incredible. I couldn’t find anything to fault within the story, if anything I just wanted more and more. The characters are amazing and I just love Graves and Salem their characters are so different to one another, plus you can’t help but want something to happen between them. I love Salem’s feisty attitude, she’s not willing to let anyone walk all over her, and I think it’s just awesome. This is seriously worth the read, you should give it a try, Meg has never disappointed me so far.

Salem is utterly unique in every way. She’s quirky, outspoken, mischievous AF and really just a walking calamity. I loved every single second of getting to know her. She’s one heck of a heroine, I’m sure fans will have no trouble falling for her off-kilter charm, but he warned... this book will make you HUNGRY! Salem is a lover of food and her constant grumbling stomach and snack cravings do nothing but elicit a similar reaction in the readers. It’s really bitter-sweet torture.
Graves is a solid male lead who I can’t wait to learn more about. He’s arrogant, intelligent, handsome, helpful, kind of a smart ass and he lives by his own code of conduct. I admire his drive and passion, he’s also the perfect counterpart to our wild leading lady.
Even though we’re only one book into a series here, I’m already going to beg that Tam gets her own spin-off. It only seems fair. She’s amazing. I love her, you will too. She deserves her own sexy story.

This paranormal new adult romance is AMAZING! I cannot speak highly enough about it, the wit and banter is great and I could not stop laughing during the book. The series seems to be a slow burn in the romance department, but the connections between the characters were real and you can see it building throughout the entire story.
I have a love/hate relationship with Salem. I could totally see her being my bestie, but at the same time I could also see her driving me up the wall. Her interaction with Graves were some of the best parts in the book. I also really liked the paranormal aspect, it was not out of this world confusing and the world was introduce extremely well and dumbed down for "regulars" to get the gist of everything. I can honestly say I will be watching out for the 2nd and 3rd books to come out in the series. 5 outta 5 stars for the intro to this series and excited for more!

What a fast paced read that had me intrigued from the beginning to the end. When I grow up I think I want to be Salem. Her quick wit, sarcasm, and no filter is right up my alley. Graves is our male hero who is sexy with all his moody and broodiness. Throw in Salem's bestfriend Tamsin, and what could possibly happen?? You are going to want to find out. I am looking forward to seeing what other kind of trouble these three can get into. I'm sorry this review is so short, but trust me when I say you are going to want to check out this book!

I am feeling so like shit right now. I had picked this from GR recommendations. There is so much of wrongness in the previous sentence that I can't even describe.
I have not read something interesting in the Fantasy genre for more than a week! I was getting desperate so I started scouring GR Recommendations.

It absolutely didn't help that I was reading after a long time and hoped for a fantastic experience to start. It also wasn't good that I had not expected this from Kel Carpenter of all people. I have read Dark Maji series and let me kid you not, It was a damned good with an As Awesome as Kickass MCs and Fantastical Worldbuiling.

This book needs to be dipped in gold and celebrated with some candles in cupcakes because it was nothing short of humorous supernatural perfection!!
I have been silently following one of the authors for awhile now, and I have enjoyed ever book from her so I decided to just jump into this story. A quick few chapters before bed... two hours later and the next morning and DARN this was fan-freaking-tastic!!! I really want to gush but I will leave it to these three observations:
1) if you love anything supernatural this is an ode to your love. It had such great moments of combining not only a great plot but little mentions of previously loved supernatural elements (i.e. Supernatural, Buffy, Twilight). Intentional or not it made the story that much more enjoyable.
2) the humor is beyond anything and a rare quality that these authors have. They have that perfect timing to the humor, a wonderful balance. The humor is over the top and a bit in your face at times but it never overwhelms or complicates the story. It's perfect and relevant at ever turn.
3) I LOVE LOVE LOVE Shepard in this story. I every much want a possessed sheep for my ever own. He stole his scenes and made me snort so loud I woke my sleeping cat!! I don't think I have ever loved a secondary animal character more in my life!! (Well maybe a certain pet raccoon). If you need a reason this is it!
I cannot wait for book two!! Perfection people, truly awesome!!

I am so excited and happy to have gotten an early copy of the books and stating the series, even though I now have to wait longer for book two. However, I know that they wait is going to definitely be worth it. I loved this new series and the characters Salem and Graves were both so stubborn and Salem’s sassy personality and her love for food and cupcakes was just so hilarious and such a page turner. Congratulations to both authors for writing such an amazing start to a new series. Looking forward to the next book!!!
