Through Some Miracle Not Yet Clear to Me: The Nightmare of Living Under the Dictatorship of Idi Amin...and Surviving

Rate this book
Sometimes we forget that life is so different in other parts of the world. Vincent Musaalo is sharing his experiences of what life was like growing up in an oppressed country driven by fear and murder. Although his family suffers the loss of a dear loved one, his mother is determined to keep the family together and, with her faith in God, raise her children with a hope and determination of a better future. Although the circumstances are less than favorable, Vincent spots his book with the light mood and humor that can arise from circumstances of youth, no matter where one lives. It is a story about a family trying to survive under extremely horrible conditions. It is surreal to think that many Ugandans indeed survived Idi Amin's regime of blood and terror. Those who survived this debacle, will forever have indelible memories of whizzing bullets that were ubiquitous at the time on Kampala streets, as confused masses jockeyed to find refuge in inconceivable places, hoping to cheat death.

My son was dating his daughter for a time, so I was intrigued by the story she told me of her dad and his upbringing in Uganda and how he made it to the United States. It reads like a personal narrative. The writing was better than I expected for someone whose native language is not English. Even though my son and former girlfriend are no longer dating, I enjoyed learning a little bit about her family's heritage. I would have to say his reason for writing the book was to show that God is in the details of our lives. God was very much in his throughout his childhood and into adulthood.

Vincent does a wonderful job of making you stop and think. "Would I have survived?" "What would I have done?" This book makes me grateful for everything that I have had and have now. Vincent went through many trial and tribulations that many of us can never understand. He tells his story of his life and the country that he loves. What an amazing story!

This author was a good friend of mine at BYU. It is simply an amazing story of growing up in Uganda and the terrible oppression he and his family suffered. He is an amazing person and after reading this I even admire him more.
