It's surprising the tricks memory plays. I thought I remembered the 1987-88 season vividly; I thought I remembered the Liverpool team with its new front three of Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge setting the league alight with six straight away wins, unable to play at home until their seventh match, due to pitch problems at Anfield, by which time the Liverpool faithful were in a frenzy and match-tickets were like gold dust. It wasn't quite like that, according to this detailed account. Yes, the team impressed, and yes, there were pitch problems delaying the first home match, but things were disconcertingly different from my memory.
Dalglish skates over the racist hostility of the Everton fans during Barnes' first match in a red shirt at Goodison, and seems surprisingly phlegmatic about various defeats, including the one in the FA Cup Final against Wimbledon, while showing a rather touching concern for players who either didn't make it into the first team, or couldn't retain a place in it.
While the names of the players and goalscorers in each match are recorded, a note of the times of the goals would have been useful.
