One of the most important pioneers in the area of child development, Maria Montessori opened the first Children's House in Rome in 1907. Today, there is a network of Montessori schools around the world. This text makes the acclaimed methods used in those schools available to all parents who wish to give their child the best possible start on the road to reading and writing. There are sections on how to create an environment which gives the best chance for language to flourish, the first steps towards reading and writing, and learning to write the letters. This book contains age-graded games and activities to aid learning, and has a resources section designed to be appropriate for different geographical regions and/or languages. It includes a reading list, resources list and suggestion for scripts.
My favorite Montessori book so far. That may be because it doesn't have a lot of the "Practical Life" exercises that I find to be tedious and unnecessary. I know that may sound blasphemous to some Montessorians but we all have to take what works for us and our child and leave what doesn't, right?
Great games to help preschoolers build literacy skills, and unlike a lot of Montessori books, it's not super dogmatic about using official (expensive) Montessori materials, and even gives templates and instructions for homemade versions of a lot of the materials often seen in Montessori schools.
The Teaching Montessori in the Home books (Hainstock) are better, though this is still worth scanning for quick ideas, illustrations and age-graded guidance.
Amazon review In Montessori Read & Write, Lynne Lawrence, a leading Montessori practitioner, shows you how you can teach your children to read and write using the famous Montessori system. The book is packed with ideas and age-specific activities and games that make learning easy and fun. It puts children on the straightest possible road to literacy, from those first steps in recognizing letters, sounds, and shapes through vocabulary-building and spelling competence to full reading fluency and creative writing skills.

This one got called back to the library before I could finish it, but I may pick it up again sometime, especially if we decide not to send our child to preschool.
I liked that it suggests playful ways to develop pre-reading skills.
Lots of practical, sensible and inspirational ideas, many if which I've put into practise in both both school and at home. I really like the Montessori approach; a child led, sensitive approach.
