A Deed of Dreadful Note
This dark-hued "cozy" murder mystery ushers into the world of the amateur sleuth Sidney Hirsch, a fiftysomething, long-haired, long-bearded, aristocratic Sherlock who, in this opening appearance, comes complete with a formidable if circumstantial female his sharp-witted M.A. candidate daughter, Margaret Anne. On their way to a vacation destination together, Hirsch, on a whim, makes a detour to a small seaside town in southern New Jersey where they soon find themselves enmeshed in a grotesque case of murder. The execution-style killing has all the earmarks of a professional hit, and using that as his springboard, Hirsch proceeds to solve the bizarre if apparently clueless murder until he's seemingly dead-ended by an inconsistency he can't resolve that threatens to consign his entire chain of inductive reasoning to the proverbial toilet.

A Deed of Dreadful Note (A.C. Douglas)
Margaret Anne Hirsch also affectionately known as "Maggie" is an intelligent young lady set off to vacation with her father Sidney Hirsch. He is an opinionated aristocrat with a passion for his cigars, with long hair and beard and he is a bit vain. His daughter is the opposite but her love for her father is profound and it is obvious he is her mentor. He refers to himself as "Sherlock" for he has a knack for solving crimes.
On their way along the Eastern coast they stop in a small seaside town in Southern New Jersey. As they walk about the shore they find themselves in a photo shop and Maggie decides to purchase a few prints.
She would like them matted and is told by the young lady, Cecilia to comeback the next day and the photos will be ready. She willingly agrees. When they return the next day they find the woman dead.
Father and daughter are on the scene and decide to try to unravel this murder. It appears to be a possible job of a hit man, and could be connected to a cocaine drug ring in the area. As they begin to investigate further things do not seem to add up. How is Cecilia involved in this , and why did she end up dead? Twists and turns occur along the way and that has them baffled. They start to doubt some of their original theories and question a few possible suspects. As they continue the quest they unravel a secret that is quite disturbing and get closer and closer to the truth.
A perfect murder/mystery with enough surprises to keep the reader turning pages until late into the night. Sidney and Maggie make a nice father/daughter investigative team. I felt it had a good solid plot. I feel classic murder mystery lovers will find enjoyment out of A Deed of Dreadful Note. I certainly did, and I look forward to reading more by A.C. Douglas.
