A small four-shot series of comics with art and writing by the famous Joseph Michael Lisner. He is one of my fave creators and artists out there. With a gothic flare and quirky style Dark Ivory is perfect for any goth or ‘used to be goth but then had to adult’ girl (or boy). I loved the Blood Angel and her stoic all-white look. I want a series about just her! The only unfortunate thing here is that this does read as dated. While only released 10 years ago, the references to MySpace and other outdated tech stand out like a sore thumb. Still a worthy read however. Now to find more of the comics Dark Ivory appears in and help my Lisner collection grow.
This was a fairly easy read and kept me interested enough to finish it. But at the same time, I found it oddly disaffecting even though it is something that on all accounts I should have really liked.
The narrative is third person but the art is all first person. I think that dissonance distracted me from the story enough that I kept having to 'get into' it again. Also, the narrative was oddly flat and emotionless - and written to the point of being almost simplistic. That also didn't create an interesting juxtaposition; instead, it was like I was reading a story set to a very different set of artwork.
I haven't read the Dawn series, admittedly. So I took this story/book on its own merit. To me, it felt like there is something really good here but it lacked a very good and sympathetic yet objective editor. I do give it four stars because it avoids the TCSP (Top Cow Soft Porn) cliche of super thin girls with underwear straps hanging above their jeans and buff square jawed guys. The physiques are filled out - even the male love interest has a bit of a gut.
Ran across this series discounted recently, & thought I’d give this one a whirl!
WARNING; Below has Spoilers!
I thought the 3rd installment was actually the strongest- you see our main character Ivory become one with the night. But her ‘dream’ of becoming such a thing has consequences. I thought the concept they were leading with - of a banned drug giving vampiric abilities was kind of cool actually! So when they revealed of course that she was a part of a Royalty Bloodline- to be honest it ruined it for me.
I absolutely adored the art style, & the knowledge of the gothic subculture. Growing up I was heavily part of the goth scene, and I still feel connected to it in many ways. I don’t often dress the part anymore, but literature & music still hold a place in my heart. It was just refreshing to see that in this series.
There wasn’t much that stood out to me aside from that, but it was a cool short read!
