Ten years ago, Gabriel Martin's sister was brutally murdered. He and his brother, Sam, have struggled to overcome the guilt, resulting in both of them taking dangerous jobs. As a fireman, Gabriel has devoted his life to protecting others. Yet no matter how many people he saves, he can't resurrect Jessie. The pain never leaves, keeping him from understanding his own goodness. It's only when he's the first responder to a brutal attack against Dr. Maddie Gilcrest that he realizes he can make a difference. Still, there are years of pain and guilt Gabriel is sinking beneath. Maddie struggles with her own fears. She can't offer him absolution any more than he can change her past, but sometimes love is enough.

This is an example of a good story ruined by one character - for me. As a whole the book was worth reading, great story, and a hero worth dreaming for.
Then comes the heroine. Two kinds of heroine that turns a great story sour for me: A) A super woman who can give wonder woman a run of her powers and nothing can touch her inside and out, and B) A heroine who is a cowering water pot from beginning to end. In this story, the heroine is B.
She was introduced as a confident doctor, then had a really traumatic experience. You would think that confidence and fight shown in the beginning will show and helped her overcome especially when the source of her fear is eliminated but no, she is still playing the victim to the end. It even took hard words from secondary character (plus convenient events) for her to be forced into HEA and that was three pages before the end.
Given the chance I still would read a book from this author since I like her style and the content of her story.

This was a great book. I found her when I was searching through lists of Nicholas Sparks books. Aside from reading about "the chill within" a lot due to the cold snowy weather (much like When Angels Cry being the same author), it was a nice story. A woman, a doctor, beaten and raped and left for dead was found by a local fireman. After seeing what he saw (and in a sense re-living an event from his past), he couldn't just walk away. A love story of course, and an easy read.

Loved!!!! H was everything that he should have been and more while still being an alpha-male. Loved the story. h was very good. Considering what happen to her, she was written without alot of whinny, angst filled emotions. Very good read. Its in my special Fav keeper shelf.

This was a good, interesting read with some great characters. Good action, lots of anticipation, some desperation and hopelessness, and many, many sweet moments. Although there was some repetition and some inconsistencies, it was still a really good read and held my attention throughout.

Very good book. Had a few typos. Would have liked a little different ending.
