Book 3--The 3rd Jolene Jackson Mystery 4th Edition, January 2016 No matter how hard she tries to escape her Texas roots--and her mother--Jolene Jackson finds herself dragged back to Kickapoo to deal with both. This time, there’s an RV park going in behind Lucille’s house and they want her property too. She’s not selling and has joined up with a dubious group that just rolled into town to save lizards. Protest rallies are underway, and with a naked lizard girl in a cage on the courthouse lawn, Jolene knows that quicker than you can say “I’ll have an ice tea with that chicken basket” things are about to get much worse. Drill rigs and earth movers are at work in the mesquites behind the house and they aren’t making camper pads. The owner of the would-be-park land turns up missing, the leader of the lizard group turns up dead and there’s rabbit chow raining down on Main Street. And when her own family skeletons start flying out of the closet, Jolene’s got to find out who’s after money, who’s after blood, and who has a deadly case of Turkey Ranch Road Rage. Turkey Ranch Road Rage and other Jolene Jackson Mysteries are only available in ebook formats, revised 2013. Reviews for the Award-Winning Jolene Jackson Mystery Series “Don’t mess with Texas! You’ll laugh your way from Kickapoo to Redwater Falls and back.” – Linda Huntley Wills, REDBOOK “Anyone who enjoys the works of Janet Evanovich or Joan Hess is going to love Ms. Boyd.” – Toby Bromberg, Romantic Times “…a terrific mystery, sharply drawn, cleverly plotted, dynamically presented, and pure sleuthing entertainment from first page to last.” – Wisconsin Bookwatch “This is a wild ride with thrills, chills and laughs galore. Highly Recommended.” – Editor, I *Love* a Mystery 5 Stars and 5+ Laughs! Has to be film adapted. Would make a delightful audiobook. ” …a hoot and a half of rollicking good mystery! The best dang novel I’ve read all year!” – Leann Arndt, The Midwest Book Review “Carl Hiaasen meets Texasville! …a must read for your Sherlock funny bone.” – Judi Clark, Mostly Fiction “…makes for fast, fun summer reading.” – Nancy Cook-Senn, Shawnee Escort “… comedic characters you’ll just love. …a humor you can’t resist. I can’t remember the last time that I read a book as light and refreshing as this.” – Pamela Stone, My Shelf “This first entry of an apparent series will leave readers loudly laughing at the antics of Jolene and her mother. Hot Enough to Kill is a tongue-in-cheek look at relationships and amateur sleuthing. Still, the mystery has a character of its own that adds to a wonderful plot.” – Harriet Klausner “Suffice to say this is a page turner. I predict you will enjoy it!” – Anne Thompson, Rocky Ford Daily Gazette “If you’re looking for a laugh-a-minute mystery in the style of Joan Hess or Carl Hiaasen, run right out and buy this book. It’s as near perfect a comedy-mystery as you can find on the market today.” – Mary Welk, author of the award-winning Caroline Rhodes Mystery Series “I had so much fun reading this that I hated to have it end. Paula Boyd writes with pure Texas humor, weaving together a good whodunit and providing a backdrop that won’t be forgotten.
Paula Boyd grew up in a small town in Texas that some would say is not unlike her fictional Kickapoo. She attended Midwestern State University where she was news editor for the university newspaper and co-editor of the yearbook until she was stricken with the tragic urge to get married.
After a decade of being away from writing to have three children, the creative side came bursting out and she began writing her first novel in 1993. Paula hit her stride in the mystery genre in 1999 when Jolene and Lucille found their way into her life.
Hot Enough to Kill, the first in the Jolene Jackson Mystery Series, is included in the University of Texas Press' Lone Star Sleuths: An Anthology of Texas Crime Fiction. The second title in the series, Dead Man Falls, won the 2001 WILLA Literary Award for Best Original Paperback and the third, Turkey Ranch Road Rage, was published in 2010. Killer Moves continues the adventures and will be coming soon!
Paula Boyd and the Jolene Jackson Mystery Books have been featured in magazines such as Redbook, Mountain Living, San Antonio Woman, Romantic Times and Colorado Homes and Living, and in newspapers across the country.
In 2011, Paula turned her attention to the self-help genre, which makes perfect sense, having had to deal with Lucille and her antics.
Writing as Paula Renaye, her acclaimed self-improvement guide, The Hardline Self Help Handbook, has won four National Book Awards. Her next title, Living the Life You Love--The No-Nonsense Guide to Total Transformation will be in bookstores September 2012.
Paula is a life transformation speaker, certified professional coach and frequent "tough love" expert on talk radio shows. Jolene is back in Kickapoo, Texas to once again bail her mother out of jail. This time for trying to stop a camper/rv park being built behind her back fence.
But once again, there is much more at work here in Kickapoo .. for example kidnappings, murder/suicide, and a bombing. Jolene and Sheriff Jerry Don Parker once more combine forces to solve these mysteries.
Ms. Boyd pens an engaging cozy with humorous family antics and mysterious happenings. Jolene returns home at her mother's request and is having a hard time figuring out just what her eccentric mother's up to. Well plotted with intrigue, humor and romance.
I liked parts of this book more than others. The reviews said that there would be funny parts but I just couldn't find the humor in it. Poor Jolene has escaped her difficult childhood and irascible mother in the scrubby badlands of northwest Texas in the fictional town of Kickapoo for the serenity and beauty of Colorado. However, things related to her mother keep dragging her back to Kickapoo. There were few to no surprises in this rather predictable book and I doubt that I will read more books written by this author.
Apparently I read this some years ago but never put review up. In terms of stand-alone reading, the beginning feels a bit slow because it relies on the characters to create suspense, so if you aren't feeling connected already, it's a while before more happens. Some awkward spots and one oddity about credit card only then using cash, but nothing important to annoy me. Would read more.
Good story, easy and quick read, not a book that I couldn't put down but I was interested in the ending and the story was entertaining. The depiction of Lucille's stubbornness got a little ridiculous in the repetitiveness of it.
A highly entertaining and fascinating read with twists, turns, and surprises that really kept me on my toes and turning the page even when I knew I should be taking myself to sleep land. I would definitely recommend this book at anyone and everyone for an entertaining escape from the daily grind
