AKA Hilary Landon George Bellairs is the nom de plume of Harold Blundell, a crime writer and bank manager born in Heywood, near Rochdale, Lancashire, who settled in the Isle of Man on retirement. He wrote more than 50 books, most featuring the series' detective Inspector Littlejohn. He also wrote four novels under the alternative pseudonym Hilary Landon.
A respectable, elderly British doctor with a house in Cannes is murdered at a hospital there. It transpired that he had fallen in love with the beautiful Countess Sauvegrain who had a crowd of high living and high spending acolytes surrounding her. Littlejohn is sent over from Scotland Yard to assist the French police. Shortly after this the doctors' driver is also murdered. Had he witnessed the Doctors' death and been silenced because of it?
The story moves along with pace through the world of the wealthy socialites of The Riviera and their hangers-on. Although the plot is fairly straightforward, I found the book very enjoyable. Bellairs has a witty style which I like very much.
Four stars is possibly a bit generous. Three and a half would be more like it.
