Used this as a read aloud for the kids during lunch. A good description of ancient Israel and what life would have been like for a little girl. Kids found it very relatable and each chapter gave us good things to talk about—especially because we are learning about this time period in history. Elementary reading level but not clunky. Lots of dialogue which makes read alouds fun.
I appreciate how this book portrayed the characters’ deep trust in the sovereignty of God through all of the unexpected events. It’s definitely a great mental shift for the reader and not being drawn to despair in trying (and unfair) times.
I read this book years ago for school. Now it is my little sister's turn to read it for school. I saw it on her school shelf for next year and remembered that I enjoyed it, but couldn't really remember the story too well. I decided to give it a reread.
I didn't love it this time to be honest. I think when I read it as 9-10 year old, I could relate more to the 10 year old main character then I can now.
I wasn't too impressed with the writing style. Also, the plot was a little slow.
Anyhow, it is still a sweet story. I am giving it an extra star because of the memories it brought back of being a little 10 year old again! :)
This is a sweet story, but perhaps a little too tidy and moralistic. It was my third time through as a historical fiction read aloud. It is perfect for reading to third grade students, as part of a mix of other selections. I noticed the older children stopping to listen in as I was reading, so I assume that they have fond memories of the story from past years
A cute story that my 3rd grade class enjoyed. I appreciated how the author described Israel during the time of Jesus. Brought me back to my Israel trip.
