The small village of Slayton has always been covered in a shroud of darkness that cannot be seen but is usually felt by most of the residents who live there. Some people want to leave Slayton but they just can't find the means to to so where others choose to live there knowing their dark secrets are safe since everyone seems to be hiding something they want kept from the light.

New mother Cora is one of those people who has always been running from the darkness of her past and the part she played back then. When suddenly without warning, hundreds of black birds fall from the sky into the lovely lake where swimmers and families picnic, Cora knows the presence she has felt following her is about to reveal a horrible secret from her previous life.

DS Sarah Noble is called out to the toxic lake while it is being dredged of the dead birds and whatever else that shouldn't be in the water, when the divers pull out an old baby pram that contains something buried among the folds of pieces of old cloth or possibly a blanket. What type of monster could have have pushed a pram with a tiny baby inside? Sarah is determined to find out what what's behind this story and hopefully bring the perpetrator to justice because this is her first big case that has been assigned to her and she wants to make her team and her new superior proud of her. Sarah knows what a huge task and risk this case will be for her because Sarah also has a darkness that follows her from her past and that's why she has chosen to reside in Slayton although she hopes her secrets don't interfere with the new life she needs to hold on to.

This was a wonderful police procedural with a terrific cast of interesting characters. I didn't know it was part of a series but it was definitely a stand-alone read and I enjoyed the story so much that I am looking forward to reading future books and also the previous ones I missed. The storyline and writing were very good and I was intrigued about the mysterious Slayton and what secrets it held. It's not often one finds a good detective story with believable supernatural vibes blended together and this book had both. The supernatural elements were not overbearing in any manner but eerily and quietly done. Some of the crimes were pretty blatant and horrific, not for sensitive readers, that's for sure. The characters were well-written and likeable for the most part while the evil baddies were completely dispicable but fun to read about. There were plenty of red herrings and twisted turns to make this book unputdownable (is that a word? If not it should be).

All in all an above average mystery/thriller book with a touch of horror written by "Caroline Mitchell" that I highly recommend!

I want to thank the publisher "Embla Books" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read one of their books and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!

I have given a rating of 4 DARK AND DISTURBING 🌟🌟🌟🌟 STARS!!

This is the 3rd book in the Slayton Thrillers Series. and as before, it is a dark thriller with elements of mysticism.

An old pram is found in the lake near Slyton with the bones of a baby. Detective Sarah Nobile is assigned to this cold case. Soon events start to unravel and the case takes dimension involving another old case and new crimes.

The book is full of creepy things and if you like such types of books, I highly recommend trying this series.

We’re back in the creepy town of Slayton. When a pram is found in a lake with what appears to be a skeleton of a baby, Sarah Noble is back to investigate. She has a confession right away, but Sarah knows there’s more to the story. I liked this book better than the last. I felt that Sarah is coming into her own now as a detective. She’s more sure of herself & her abilities. We, of course, see more of the other colorful characters from the other two books, but I liked that Sarah had the leading role. The story had the creepy factor & I thought the mystery was well fleshed out.

The Bone House is the third book in the Slayton Thriller series, and if there’s one thing I love about this series is how CREEPY it is! Caroline Mitchell is genius at creating a sense of malevolence which simmers and bubbles away below the surface from the start. Before you ask “Yes” The Bone House can be read as a stand-alone, although that’s not to say I wouldn’t recommend you read this series in order just because it’s so good! One of the unusual aspects of this series and one that makes it stand out from other crime series is the element of horror/supernatural that runs throughout. It’s definitely a book to read during the day or with the lights on!

Detective Sarah Noble is back and with the help of forensic investigating another utterly spine chilling case in the town of Slayton. After a freak-event, the waters of Slayton’s lake are dredged, revealing a dark, long-held secret. An old pram is pulled found, with the bones of a baby still strapped inside. Characters are just as important as the setting, the relationship between Sarah and Elliott Carter, a young boy who has premonitions, continues to flourish.

Slayton is a strange, macabre little town that’s full of unnerving myths, legends, and eccentric characters. Which is great, as it creates an atmosphere that conjures up a sense of foreboding that stays with the reader at each turn of the page. Caroline Mitchell has taken a premise built around a simple mystery and created something complex and unique. There’s so many threads that install a sense of fear in the reader. The visual descriptions of The Bone House gave me the Heebie Jeebies! I enjoyed the well-placed twists and turns that kept me guessing, another cracking read from Caroline Mitchell.

When a whole flock of birds decide to fall dead in a lake in Slayton. The local city council decide to dredge the lake only to from an old pram with baby remains. Detective Sarah Noble takes on the case to find out who the baby is and why she has ended this way?
Cora who recently moved to Slayton, owns the local bookshop called Turn the pages. When she hears about the pram, it is the news that she has been dreading. It brings back the horrifying memories of the time she was at ‘The Bone House’
When Sarah Noble investigates, with the help of forensic anthropologist Sarah and a boy called Elliot. What will they discover, and will Sarah survive after putting herself in danger?
Thank you, Embla books, for a copy of The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell. This is the third book in the Slayton thriller series The author has done it again with this tense, creepy thriller with a supernatural element to it. I loved the story line you can sense the evil with the town of Slayton. This had me on tenterhooks throughout. I couldn’t stop reading and have read this in a day. This is a fabulous read.

When a baby’s pram with a skeleton inside is found in a lake in Slayton police start to investigate the incident.
This is the third book in a series, I hadn’t read the previous books but there was plenty on the back story explained so I could read it as a stand alone.
Some twists and turns in this creepy story about the former inhabitants of an old house.
Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell
is the third in the Slayton Thriller series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Embla Books  and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Slayton is a town that is a little strange, where the "odd" is the normal, where the myths and legends seem to mingle with the everyday life.  Detective Sarah Noble has come a long way since the death of her husband.  Her boss Gabby, although a pessimist is her good friend, and their new boss is cheerful DI McGuire.  Co-workers include Yvonne, a rather rude woman, and Richie, who is Sarah's rock. Sarah's best friend Maggie has a child who "knows" things.  Elliott's dreams terrify him, but he often helps Sarah solve crimes, and there is usually something strange going on in Slayton.  Elliott's teacher, Miss Grogan is helping him.  Sarah's other friend Elsie is a romance author, and her natural nosiness also helps Sarah.

My Synopsis:
(No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
In a rather bizarre event, hundreds of birds fall to their death into the local lake.  When the lake is dredged in clean-up efforts, an old pram is pulled up, a baby still wrapped inside.  When the "find"  becomes public knowledge, Cora, the owner of a bookstore, ends up being front and center.  She always knew her actions may come back to haunt her,  but the only thing she wants is to protect her new baby.  But she fears that the "bone house" of old, is still with her, and her father still wants her.

Meanwhile, Elliott has been having nightmares about that pram, and about beetles.

Sarah is assigned this "cold" case, which ends up being quite current.  She knows there are a lot of secrets out there, and that a lot of people are lying to her, but what she doesn't know, is that not everyone will survive this case.

My Opinions:
Really enjoying this series.  The atmosphere of the town is creepy, the plot rather dark, and the characters are full of surprises.  I love Sarah, her compassion, her drive, her character.

There were a number of twists and red herrings that kept me invested in the story

I'm not sure if I missed it, or if the reason behind the dead crows was washed away, but I'd like to know why they ended up in the lake...., although it was a good creepy beginning.

Anyway, I really liked the book, and am ready for the next one!

Book Three does not work for me!

Unrealistic and often illogical links made worse by the ‘telling rather than the showing’ style of writing. By far, protagonist, Sarah Noble is the one aspect that has put me off for good. Anyone in the police service reading this novel would be throwing it against a wall - even statements like “I shouldn’t be doing this” don’t make them reason to do them!

The only saving grace for me is little Elliot and his visions and insights.

This book is the third in a series about the dark occurrences that happen in the small town of Slayton. I have not read the first two but very much enjoyed this instalment and I think I will go back and catch up on what I have missed.

This book balances between creepy and supernatural goings on and police detective work which is a genre I enjoy and I feel like this book did really well!

Detective Sarah Noble gets put on a cold case following the recovery of the bones of a baby from a lake, found due after a whole flock of crows falls dead from the sky. This little mystery isn’t really covered in the case but it did give the book a nice creepy opening and I wonder if more supernatural things happen (or have happened) in the other books.

I really enjoyed the characters and felt that just the right number of suspects/witnesses /secondary characters were introduced to keep me guessing but not too many that I got confused. The twists were great and I didn’t see them coming but they also weren’t so out there that they were completely unbelievable.

All in all I do recommend this book if you enjoy a good fast paced detective thriller, especially if you also enjoy some supernatural subplots thrown in!

Thank you to Embla Books and NetGalley for an eARC in return for a review.

*Bone Chilling*

Just the title alone gave me the chills…..

So when hundreds of crows in one succession fall from the sky into a lake bam, I was back in Slayton. The birds falling from the sky brought along a sense of dread….

When an old pram is pulled from Slayton’s lake, there are the bones of a baby still secured inside

DC Sarah Noble is on the case. Sarah is helped by the extraordinary Forensic anthropologist, Sophia Hudson who is quite the character. Sarah also has a secret weapon. His name is Elliott he is a special young boy who has a gift. His gift is the stuff of nightmares. Sarah goes out of her way to keep him safe as he is her best friend’s son.

Although this is a cold case, the can of worms that are about to be opened will make anyone want to push that can firmly shut…

Still, the case needs to be investigated as the past and present collide…

The ending made me wonder if there is another book in the pipeline

The Bone House is the third instalment of the Slayton thriller series, and it did not disappoint!
I absolutely love everything about this series. I love the characters, the writing style, the plots and all the twists. I was so excited to catch back up with Sarah and all the other characters in this book.

I won’t give too much away, but wow! This might even be my favourite book so far in the series. I really loved the plot in this book and it was interesting trying to work out whether something supernatural was at play or not. The twists blew me away and I could not put it down, especially towards the end!
This was brilliant and I hope there will be a fourth instalment of this series in the future.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Im really conflicted on this one. There were parts of the book I really enjoyed and were right up my street, but it dragged and I didn’t find any of the characters interesting. I didn’t realise this book was 3rd in a sequel, whilst I would say it’s not entirely necessary to read the previous books (i didn’t) there were times I was confused, the Elliot ‘situation’ is also really random and IMO not needed for a thriller book and brought not substance to the plot

Happy publishing day @caroline_writes @emblabooks
The Bone House is the most deliciously thrilling Slayton novel yet! Slayton novel 3 delivers another eerie and chilling setting and storyline. Crows are falling from the sky. Whispers of the Day of Wreckening abound, nicknamed crowpocalyse. A year on from the last novel and a foreboding atmosphere once again surrounds the town and Detective Sarah Nobel senses it. Before long a pram is dredged from the lake with the bones of a baby still strapped inside 😱 a confession follows all too quickly. Sarah trusts her gut instincts, knowing there is more to this story. Whilst it is best to read the first two novels, this can be read as a standalone. You don't want to miss any of the series!

It whispers your name
In the dead of night,
In the silent spaces
Devoid of light.
Keep your babies silent
For it will take them too.
The bone house, the bone house
Is calling for you . . .

Caroline Mitchell really knows how to put the chills into her stories by kicking off with a creepy poem!! Love it!! It totally sets the ambience for The Bone House and its chilling tale.

And she doesn’t stop with a creepy poem. Crows falling from the sky.. what the actual??! Crowpocalpyse as Richie calls it! Only in Slayton! Bejeezus!!! That’s a bit Hitchcock gone wrong!! What next? Yup a baby in a pram with rocks tied to weight it…. Now that is a chilling crime to solve!!

I got so frustrated for Cora. The mum in me wanted to help her and keep her baby safe. The world was totally against this mum, surely everyone deserves a second chance??! Even Sarah at points annoyed me with her attitude to this vulnerable woman.

Just to make myself clear, The Bone House is seriously chilling. Mitchell has upped the heebie jeebie factor! I loved my third trip to Slayton and I really hope to be going back before long!

The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell, which is the third installment in the Slayton Thriller series, is a gripping new thriller with the intrigue of psychological and supernatural elements. I have not read the previous books in the series; however, I do believe this written well enough to be read as a standalone book.

Caroline Mitchell is masterful at the underlying malevolence tone throughout the storyline, and her timing as to when the tension builds perfectly until everything bursts to the surface.

This multilayered book is full of clever side stories and the depths of characterizations which intertwine and mingle to create an unsettling and hair-raising atmosphere where the tension can be cut with a knife.

Slayton is a small town that is just a little left of peculiar. The legends, the myths, and the townspeople lend to the naturally unnerving atmosphere and feeling of macabre.
The visual vision of the Bone House is truly chilling, and when an old Priam is pulled from the deep of the lake, with the bones of a baby still inside, it’s the moment that Cora, the new mother, has feared since moving to Slayton.

Sophia Hudson, the forensic anthropologist, Elliott Carter, and Detective Sarah Noble will try to get the details and any clues of the this cold case in order to finally close this case for good. What will she find? Even more important, will she survive the Bone House?

***I would like to thank NetGalley and Embla Books, and most of all Caroline Mitchell, for this ARC read and for the opportunity to write my own opinion and unbiased review.***

Caroline Mitchell serves up another helping of creepiness and spookiness in the final part of the Slayton thrillers trilogy. Not as thrilling as the first two but it's still a very good read as Sarah Noble once again does battle with evil. I would have liked to have seen more of Elliot and his visions in this one, so I do think the author missed a trick. It's wonderfully written and as always that eerie feel is beautifully portrayed. It's a good well plotted story and thoroughly enjoyable, it's just that the previous two books were just a touch more creepy which gave them a special 'something' All in all a good 3.5⭐️read

I enjoyed the style of writing and the quick, short chapters kept me hooked however I felt the twist could have been stronger. It felt like there was a lot of build up for the ‘reveal’ to then be over fairly quickly. I would have liked to have seen some clues as to who the villain was all along. This book just failed to have that *gasp* moment but I did still enjoy reading it.

Hundreds of birds have fallen dead into Slayton's lake with the media dubbing it the 'crowpocalypse', resulting in the town council having to dredge the lake, but they uncover more than they bargained for when they find an old pram containing the bones of a baby. Will Detective Sarah Noble crack this cold case and how does it link to Cora and the secrets of the bone house?

We are back with Noble and the team to investigate the latest case in the foreboding town of Slayton and it doesn't take her long to get a confession, but she's certain there's more to this cold case. As with the first two books in this series I was drawn in right from the first page, this story hits the ground running, it's fast paced and Mitchell's descriptive writing sent chills running down my spine and had me flicking the pages of my kindle so fast I devoured it in a matter of hours. It's a well written plot which I was certain I'd worked out but, in true Mitchell style, she threw in a curveball which set me thinking again and, although I did guess part of it in the end, there was still that final twist which I didn't see coming. It was great to see some of the characters from previous books returning and the bond that Sarah has with young Elliott growing stronger. Once again this author has knocked it out of the park and I can't wait for book four in this chilling series.

I'd like to thank Embla Books and the author for inviting me to read this, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.

I found "The Bone House" by Caroline Mitchel to be an intriguing and captivating read.

The story revolves around a town called Slayton, where hundreds of birds fall dead from the sky into a lake, leading to the discovery of a rusty old pram containing the bones of a baby. The protagonist, Detective Sarah Noble, works with forensic anthropologist Sophia Hudson to solve a cold case related to the baby's death.

The book combines supernatural elements with a detective's effort to solve a mystery. I found the plot twists and turns to be both unexpected and exciting. However, I did feel that the story wrapped up too quickly and some parts could have used more elaborating. The characters in the book were interesting, and I was invested in their stories.

Overall, I would definitely recommend "The Bone House" to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a supernatural twist. The author also did an excellent job of creating a creepy atmosphere that kept me on edge throughout the book.

This is the third book in the Slayton Thriller series and just like the previous two I found this one a superb read. Right from the start Caroline Mitchell has a knack of reeling you right into the story and you will just want to keep on reading until you reach the dramatic conclusion. The Bone House is a creepy and atmospheric read that had me on the edge of my seat at times. This can be read as a standalone but I really recommend reading the other books in this series as they are also excellent.
