August 2, 2024 Edit: How TF did I get so hyped about Churchill idk

Churchill was a true British. He was not just a great orator but a believer from heart. He believed and stated that no matter what it takes and how much it takes that they "... shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, ...". A country's leader should be like this. Churhcill isn't there to promote himself or gain riches and such, he is in the chair to get the UK and Europe through all adversity. Whether he's a good man or not, he was a good leader for Britania. He wasn't a man who was denying the facts or trying to alter them, "... that we have sustained a total and unmitigated defeat, ...". A country needs a leader who is there to protect the country, Churchill did this, there are many leaders who only care about themselves or their inner circles, they are people who got to the power one way or another, and they only think about their self-interests. But when you look at Sir Winston Churhcill, you can clearly see a true Briton who is living for Britannia, you can see a man who's Uniting the Kingdom, there is no fakeness in him, he deserved his spot. It is a different subject that whether Churchill is a good man or not, but he is a man who lead UK for many times and for long times, and he was, indeed, very successful. He said that if necessary UK will fight alone, but he nearly united the world and become a bridge between many different countries, "... and anyhow, whatever happens, we will all go down fighting to the end."

Начинала читать в январе. Закончила в декабре - под звуки сирен воздушной тревоги и при свете свечи. The lights went out and the bombs came down. But every man, woman and child in the country had no thought of quitting the struggle.

We shall never surrender.

A really nice and compact refresher on aspects of British and world history leading up to the Second World War and then through to its conclusion in 1945. One is certainly reminded of the role of rhetoric and oratory in lifting up and steeling a people against assault and the threat of invasion, as well as the vibrancy of parliamentary institutions. Definitely a good read.

World War 2. Churchill's Speeches. I really enjoyed this book and finished in a few hours (although it would have been quicker had I not stopped several times to discuss what I was reading with my family) it was like giving me a piece of history to sit and absorb and I found it fascinating. Churchill was obviously a fantastic speaker and gave Britain the hope it needed to get through the war, particularly the year they faced Hitler and the Germans alone. Being of British heritage it gives me a sort of pride too. Four stars instead of five because it took me a few pages to adjust to the older language (although no fault of the books this is true) and that I actually would have like to have seen maybe one or two of Hitler's speeches just to make it all the more real.

What an orator! My, what a first-hand account of the Second World War, from the man that lead it! This collection of speeches from Winston Churchill starts from the Munich conference, touches on some of the most grim days of the war and wraps up with his famous balcony speech on VE-Day. This is a must read, not only to admire this mans eloquence and honesty to his fellow countrymen, but also to take his first hand account of the war.

Woah! I was not expecting this collection of old speeches to be so good - Churchill really is one of the greatest orators of all time. Some of these speeches can be found online and I strongly recommend, should you choose to read this collection, you listen to them as well.

I read this after visiting the Churchill war rooms with its wonderful recordings. I could almost hear his voice and while I read. Sometimes the right person is in the right place at the right time. These speeches give a small window into significant points in time of WWII.

«I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin… Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire… Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world… will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister… by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.’” - Winston Churchill, Address to the House of Commons, June 18, 1940.

A slim selection of Churchill's speeches before, during and after the war most of which will be familiar to anyone who has read Churchill. However, hist speech denouncing the Munich agreement is worth reading if only to remind oneself of how correctly he read he situation particularly in the context of the widespread euphoria. The cross-words with Lady Astor also stand out.

Wow. What a great book and such an interesting contrast to our current President. This book takes the reader through a series of speeches of Churchill's during World War II. He is eloquent, inspiring, and intelligent. When did leaders move from graduate level speeches to elementary school level? Are our leaders getting dumber or are we?
