The Marriage Break-Up

Rate this book
A loyal wife. A handsome husband. Which one of them will kill to keep their secret?

When I first met Malcolm, I knew that he was everything I had ever wanted. When we had our beautiful, blue-eyed son Finn I felt like my life was finally complete. The past eight years have been the happiest of my life. Until now.

Because Malcolm’s been lying to me.

I’ve been following him. I finally saw him with her. How could he betray me and my darling boy? Of course, we all have our secrets. But everything I’ve done, I did for my son.

So I have a plan. When the police knock on our door tomorrow morning, Malcolm will have no clue what’s in store. All I need to do is pick up Finn and we can start our new life together.

But I don’t notice the car tailing me. The sudden crushing impact takes my breath away. As my heart pounds and my car is forced towards the rushing river below, my only thought is for my precious Finn. Because I know with certainty that if this is happening to me, then he’s in grave danger too…

Did Malcolm know what I was planning after all? Is this his revenge? Or worse, have my own secrets and lies finally caught up with me—and has my time finally run out?

The Woman at Number 6 is a totally twisty and gripping psychological thriller that will have you wondering who to trust and turning the pages well into the night! Fans of Gone Girl, The Couple Next Door and T.M. Logan will be totally hooked.

Gripping, shocking and hard to put down, The Woman at Number 6 kept me on the edge of my seat. turning the pages and wanting more!

Tracy and Malcolm appear to have it all - a happy marriage and an adorable son. But Malcolm is left shocked when Tracy informs him at breakfast that she wants a divorce. Tracy has a plan and is ready to set it in motion, but later that day she notices that a car is following her. Anxious she pulls off and once she feels safe, she lets her guard down until the car that had been following her keeps slamming into her car, pushing it toward the river.

Did Malcolm find out her plans? Is he seeking revenge? Have Tracy's secrets caught up with her?

Talk about an adrenaline rush! This book kept me on my toes and then some! I had no idea where this book was going, and I enjoyed this twist filled shocking ride! Matthew Farrell pulled the wool over my eyes. I thought I knew what was going on at one point only to be shocked and left sitting with my mouth hanging open. This is how you do it!

Gripping, thrilling, twist filled and hard to put down!

I enjoyed the few Matthew Farrell books I've read up to now, so was looking forward to this.
Farrell seems to be popular with psychological thriller fans for his dramatic twisty books.
I was somewhat thrown when I started this, as the opening chapters begin in a police procedural style where detectives are examining a murder scene.
Once I adjusted to the plot, I was gripped and shocked as the events unfolded.
This was a great thriller!

I was not ready for all the twists and turns.

Side Note: This novel was titled The Marriage Break-up, but I guessed they're changing it to The Woman at Number 6.

Tracy had just told her husband, Malcolm, she wanted a divorce. Not soon after, the police received a panicking call from Tracy. When the police show up at their home, Malcolm swears he had nothing to do with Tracy's disappearance. Was Malcolm the one behind Tracy's disappearance or was it someone else?

This story had me on the edge of my seat! I wasn't sure who to trust. Then right when I thought I had everything figured out, the author throws in twist after twist! If you're a fan of thrillers, this is a must-read!

Highly recommend!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Matthew Farrell, and Bookouture for graciously sending me the ARC to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

What the heck did I just read? This book had more twists than Space Mountain!! Just when you think the final twist has been delivered, here comes another!

I did enjoy this novel by Matthew Farrell very much. Admittedly, it took me a while to get into the story. It started off strong and grabbed me right away. But then it slowed a bit for me until the last half or so — maybe I’ve been more distracted recently, or just more easily bored. That ending, though!! Geez!! Didn’t see it coming.

If you love books with slow-building suspense, characters who may or may not be lying through their teeth, and twists enough to give you whiplash, you should pick up THE WOMAN AT NUMBER 6. If nothing else, it’s a wild ride!!

Tracy has gone missing. In fact, she was in a terrible car accident that has left her broken and battered. But, she is not alone. Someone is caring for her now and has promised to always care for her. However, Tracy’s husband and son are missing her.

There is more going on. Tracy suspected her husband of having an affair. A woman named Kat has been murdered. What is the connection? With rapid changing twists and turns, and a few cleverly placed rabbit trails, this story was incredibly tense.

I loved how the story began. Tracy calmly tells her husband Malcolm that she wants a divorce. She then leaves home and the real drama begins. She may have wanted to leave her husband, but what of their young son Finn? Where has Tracy gone and what of the car accident? And what of the murder of the woman named Kat? The police keep circling around Malcolm as they are trying to determine what role he plays in all of this.

I was kept guessing throughout and just as I thought I knew who was responsible, I was thrown for a loop yet again. Great job, Matthew Farrell. Keep these thrilling books coming.

Many thanks Bookouture to and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This is a really fast paced mystery filled with twist after twist and it’s guaranteed to shock you.

Tracy has just told her husband, Malcolm, she wants a divorce. Later that day, Tracy goes missing and Malcolm is immediately suspect number one. At the same time, a young woman called Kat is murdered and the two cases connect and there’s so many twists and turns I couldn’t put this down!

There were a few different perspectives to follow which I struggled to keep up with at first but then I got used to it and really got into the story. The plot is very cleverly written and everything connects somehow. Everything is explained in the end and the ending was really shocking for me. I really enjoyed this!

“A loyal wife. A handsome husband. Which one of them will kill to keep their secret?”

A very entertaining psychological thriller- this one kept me on the edge of my seat and I flew through it! It is filled with so many twists and you just don’t know who you can trust!

A very clever plot and is very fast paced. Also a really great ending with a final twist right at the end. If you enjoy trying to solve a mystery, then this one is definitely for you!

At first it was hard to keep up with the changing POVs as there was no clear distinction on chapters, but you are soon able to get use to it and keep up.

Such a quick, easy and enjoyable read! Recommend checking it out!🖤

This is one of the twistiest books I’ve read lately. They just keep coming and coming! We have a woman who is murdered in one state and another one disappears in the next state. Are they connected? If so, then how? I was confused at times as to where this story was taking me. But in a good way. Most of the book focuses on the missing woman. On the day she disappears, she tells her husband she wants a divorce. It sure seems coincidental! The sister of the missing woman bands with the husband to try and find her. At times, she feels he’s guilty, but at other times, she’s convinced of his innocence. The detectives for each case (the murdered woman and the missing woman) play a dominant role in this book as well. I guarantee you won;t guess everything that happens!

The Marriage Break-Up is my fourth Matthew Farrell book and it doesn’t disappoint! Tracy walks into the kitchen one morning, announces to her husband Malcolm she wants a divorce and leaves the house. In a phone call later that day, Tracy agrees to explain when she gets home. However, she disappears. The book raises many questions and mysteries. Would she really leave her young son behind? Is she the victim of foul play? Is the murder of a young woman in a separate jurisdiction connected? Malcolm is brought in by the police. Is he involved in her disappearance? Present and past secrets abound, and the many characters’ lives are entangled. Matthew Farrell leads the reader along with twists and turns and it is an exciting ride.

With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC. My opinions are my own.

I got an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review so thank you.
If you like Frieda Mcfadden books then I recommend this book. Truly addictive book that has you wanting more more more. Told from various characters view points this is a gripping whodunit mystery with more than one crime. I have to say it was an easy read and I would have given the book 5 🌟 until it got to about 80% of the way. There are so many twists and turns with this one it's hard to keep up but I felt a lot of it to be childish in its execution (I really do hate confessions don't you? So cliché) I was then going to downgrade ot to a 3 🌟 but that last twist redeemed itself so a decent 4 🌟 it is. I do recommend this book if you like fast paced thrillers with killer twists.

4.5 rounded up to 5

This book was really good and I really enjoyed it. This was my 1st book by this author, but I will most definitely be reading more.

Tracy Cowan has a plan for leaving her husband. She's going to leave him, take their son, and move to Vermont to start a new life. She asks him for a divorce as she's about to head out to see her therapist. She doesn't give him an explanation or any time to ask questions. Her therapist knows she's leaving him because he's been cheating, and that is the one thing Tracy will not tolerate. Once her appointment is over, she's ready to go home and talk to Malcolm. As she's driving back, she notices there's a car following her. She tries to lose them and decides to get off the highway. She thinks she's lost them and stops at a park, but the mysterious car shows up. It starts to ram into her car and pushes it into the Hudson River. Did Malcolm already know about the divorce, and is this his way of making sure he doesn't lose his son?

Told in multiple POVs, this book had me hooked from the beginning. There were so many twists and turns. I didn't know what to expect or who to believe. The ending was mindblowing, and I definitely didn't see it coming. There were 2 storylines, and the author did a great job of bringing them together. Full of mystery and suspense, this was a great psychological thriller, and I would highly recommend it.

This was called The Marriage Break-up but is now called The Woman at Number 6 by Matthew Farrell
A woman tells her husband she wants a divorce, and later that day she goes missing. Was this a coincidence? This book was a psychological thriller that also had me up at the crack of dawn trying to figure out what was going on. At first this book is slow paced, which honestly I hated, but if you push through it gets really good! This books had too many twists and turns to count, and I didn’t even see one coming which is why I love psychological thrillers! This books also gives off major Criminal Minds vibes, if you’re in to that show, it happens to be my favorite show so I think that’s why I enjoyed the book so much! The ending will have you questioning everything. I finished this book 3 days ago and I’m still wondering about the ending. Overall I give this book a 4.5/5

The ending of The Woman at Number 6 still has my mind blown!!! Wow, Matthew Farrell has written one of the best mysteries I've read in 2023!! This book has it all and I read it in one day! When people say I couldn't put this book down, with this book it's for real! I took my kindle with me everywhere so that I could continue reading this book whenever possible!

Tracy has been married to Malcolm for eight years and they have a 7 year old son, Finn. Life always seemed good until Tracy found out that Malcolm was cheating on her. Malcolm was having an affair with Kat, an attorney that he used for his construction business. She was young, blonde, and beautiful. Tracy found out by following Malcolm and seeing them together. Tracy had another bad relationship that ended badly because he cheated. Malcolm knew this was the one thing she wouldn't tolerate and yet he'd cheated anyways.

Tracy was meeting with her therapist and told him that she had told Malcolm that she wanted a divorce this morning. She then left for work without any explanation. Malcolm has been blowing up her phone with text messages and voicemails ever since. Tracy has not answered any. Dr. Devi tells Tracy that she owes Malcolm an explanation before she leaves town with Finn. Tracy plans on heading home to have a talk with Malcolm when she finishes with therapy. Dr. Devi is pleased that she's finally doing it, but is shocked to learn that this will be her last therapy session. Tracy plans on taking Finn and moving up north so there won't be anyway for her to continue her sessions with Dr. Devi. He explains that she's made great progress, but still needs to keep working. Tracy says that she'll look for someone once she gets settled or she can have a zoom session with Dr. Devi.

As Tracy gets to her car and starts towards home, she's glad that Finn is with her sister tonight and won't be home to hear the conversation that she's going to have with Malcolm. As she's making her way through traffic, Tracy notices a car with only one headlight a couple cars behind her. As she's making her way out of the city into the suburbs, she sees that the car is still behind her and seems to be following her!! Tracy calls Malcolm and accuses him of having her followed. He says he has no idea what she's talking about, but he says for her to take the next exit and go to the police station that is just ahead. She cuts across 2 lanes to take the exit and loses the car with one headlight. She waits on the curb by the police station, but the car never comes. She feels silly like maybe she imagined the whole thing.

Since Tracy is in her old neighborhood, she decides to drive down by the water where she and Malcolm got married. As she's in the parking lot by the river, she's reminiscing when the car with one headlight shows up. She's very exposed here as it's a remote lot with only one way in and one way out. As she thinks about gunning the gas to get out the other car comes charging at her. The other car hits her car from behind and starts pushing her towards the river! She tries braking, but it doesn't work. She's getting closer and closer to the water. She opens her car door hoping that she can get out as the front of the car plunges into the river. Tracy gets out in the water and makes her way to the bushes on the side of the river. She's trying to hide, but she is grabbed and hit across the head. Everything goes black.

The same night that Tracy is taken, Kat is murdered in her apartment. Malcolm and Kat had gone out to eat and have drinks earlier that day before going back to her place to make love. When Detective Taft finds Kat's body he is upset. There's nothing worse than finding someone so young and vibrant dead, especially on your last case before retirement! Who could've done this? Did Malcolm kill Kat to cover his indiscretions? Did one of her clients kill her? Are Kat's murder and Tracy's disappearance connected? Malcolm keeps calling Tracy but it goes right to voicemail. She should've been home hours ago! Malcolm calls Missy, Tracy's sister, to see if she went there to see Finn before coming home. Missy hasn't seen Tracy and now she's worried something has happened to her.

Missy decides to pack and drive Finn back home. She wants to wait with Malcolm to make sure her sister is okay. They call the police and tell them that Tracy thought she was being followed and hasn't made it home. The police locate a 911 call from Tracy's cellphone that she made as the car was pushing her into the river. There was no information about her location, so it's not helpful and the call was very brief. Detective Kelly is assigned her first case to be in charge of with Tracy's missing persons case. Did Malcolm have Tracy killed because she was going to divorce him? What will Malcolm tell Finn about his mom? You will have more and more questions as you read The Woman at Number 6 and just when you think you've got it figured out, you don't! Trust me, you don't! This book gives the reader such an awesome experience!

I rate The Woman at Number 6 five stars with my very highest recommendation. If you like a good mystery then this book is a gift for you! Enjoy trying to solve the mysteries and all of the twists along the way! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Woman at Number 6 in exchange for a fair review. #TheWomanatNumber6

I enjoyed this one, the story was fast paced and grabbed my attention from the beginning. The twists and suspense was great. There is a lot going one in this one with the side stories but that didn't bother me it held my attention and I found myself trying to figure out how it was all going to come together.
Love the multiple POV but I wish the chapter a title telling you who's pov it was before you started reading.

I did find a few typos, that really bugs me.

My synopsis:  Out of the blue, Tracy asks for a divorce and then walks out the door.  Her husband, Malcolm is confused.  He didn't see this coming.  Missy, Tracy's sister, goes over to the house to show Malcolm her support.  She's also baffled with Tracy's decision.  Tracy has everything...a husband, an adorable son, a nice home.  Why would she want to lose all of that?

Then the police finds out that Malcolm was having an affair.   His mistress happened to be murdered the same day his wife disappeared.  With those to coincidence, Malcolm looks good for both cases especially when hid DNA was found all over his mistresses crime scene.

Rating: I rated this book a 4 star.  It started off slow but the speed picked up really fast.  These writing styles are my favorite kind.  It's written in the characters' POV but in a third person format.  The plot thickens more as you continue reading.  Just when I think I've figured out what happened, another twist comes out and I'm second guessing myself.  This is my first book from this author buf definitely won't be my last!

This book hooked me from the first chapter. It’s rare for me to read a book in one afternoon, but I couldn’t put this down. The comparisons to Gone Girl are well-deserved but it is unique and unpredictable in its own right. There were multiple POVs but they were never confusing and I appreciated the short chapters. Highly recommend if you enjoy domestic thrillers! 4.5⭐️

Thanks so much Bookouture and NetGalley for an advance read in exchange for this review.

Tracy tells her husband she wants a divorce. Then she disappears after a 911 call. Is this a classic husband did it tale?

Told through multiple POVs, this isn't your typical wife wants to leave story. There are some twists, and some of the twists seem almost too far fetched. I didn't really like this one, and it was hard for me to finish. I read other reviews that said the twists were unpredictable, and that kept me going. It did not help that I found a lot of the characters unlikable.

Early on (barely into the first chapter), I wanted this to be DNF. There was a line that described love as schizophrenic. I find it extremely stigmatizing when we use mental health diagnoses as adjectives to describe things. In fact, the definition of schizophrenic straight from the dictionary option on Kindle is someone who has schizophrenia.

First of all, thank you so much to @BookSparks and @MFarrellWriterBooks for my gifted copy of this book and the awesome box it came in. It was so cool to realize how all of the different items included in the box tied in with the storyline. And providing character cards with pins and string to tie together connections? Genius.

"It's funny," he snickered. "I watch all the shows like Date-line and 20/20 and True Crime and all that stuff, and I always wonder how husbands and wives get themselves mixed up as prime suspects. I always wonder why they just don't tell all the truth at the start so they can be cleared. Now I get it. I understand how someone could fall into becoming a prime suspect. I'm going to tell you the truth and then I'm going to become yours."

Tracey wants a divorce from Malcolm and she just blindsided him with her demand over breakfast this morning. She ignores his calls all day long and he’s pissed. After her therapy appointment, she finally calls Malcolm to say she’s coming home to talk, but Tracy realizes she’s being followed and she can’t escape. This just sets the scene for one of the most clever and twisty thrillers I’ve read recently.

I absolutely loved this book and it’s definitely my favorite of the month! It has short chapters, multiple timelines, multiple points of view - all which I love. Farrell’s writing style is smart, enjoyable, and very easy to follow along with. For a book with multiple POVs, a lot of characters, different timelines, and separate locations, it was surprisingly easy to not only follow along, but become completely enveloped in this storyline. This was the first book I’ve read in a while with multiple POVs that didn’t have the POV name as the title of the chapter, but Farrell’s writing made it clear through the chapter whose POV we were in. I felt that the different POVs flowed well and never felt choppy or forced. Same goes for the jumps to different locations or timelines, everything just worked!

This characters in this book truly create the most intricate and screwed up web of connections between the characters. Everyone is multifaceted and we got decent character development into the most important characters. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I was truly surprised by twist after twist in this book, literally until the final pages. Almost every time I thought that I figured out what was going on, I was shocked again. This book had me wide awake at 2am needing to know what happened!

Con: The writing is very detailed and descriptive, which does not always feel necessary and adds to the length of the book, which I was intimidated by upon picking it up. I felt it was a longer thriller. Also, I may have missed something, but I don't get the title!

On the date she announced she wanted divorce Tracy attends her last therapy session with Dr. Dean and on her way home to let Malcolm get the disappointment of the failed marriage office chess she realizes someone is following her at first she thinks it is one of Malcolm‘s goons from the construction site but he quickly disemboweled her of that notion it’s so she has no clue who is behind her in the sedan with the one headlight after a couple of quick maneuvers she loses the car and decides the park by the lonely beach unfortunately she wasn’t as good at losing her stalker she thought because he is quickly behind her ramming her car into the water while Malcolm is morning he’s missing and or dead wife Tracy‘s sister Missy quickly comes over to take care of little fin and Malcolm it gets even worse for Malcolm when his mistress and lawyer is found dead at her home with his fingerprints all around the house he claims he is innocent and if he is this mean someone else has a devious plan in the works to get rid of him and Tracy, but who? It is always a slippery slope when there is more than one crazy person in the book but The author seems to have made it work this is a great book and one I highly recommend more than once there was surprises that I did not see coming in although there were a couple I did me predicting those didn’t prepare me for the ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend that I received it from NetGalley and a publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

OH MY GOD

To say this is book was amazing is an understatement.

I loved every fucking second of this book, at one point I thought I knew exactly the direction the book was going, I thought I was damn clever. Author man did it again, he bested me. I never would’ve imagined the ending at all. There was so much that was unanswered and then all of a sudden I was getting answers to questions I didn’t know I had. Every fucking turn was so unexpected, I was sat, the entire time. Nothing could’ve prepared me for the stress I was about to endure with this thriller. The stress, totally worth it. This book was fantastic, I’m almost mad that I didn’t discover Matthew Farrell until now.

This is the second book I’ve read by author man.
10/10 I fully recommend.

Twist upon twist upon twist--holy smokes!!
This thriller grabbed my attention immediately, lagged in the middle 😟, and then picked back up with incredible force for the remaining 1/3.
Although some of the scenes were completely far fetched, I was just dying to see what would happen at the end…and I was caught off guard more than 3 times during the final third of the book. I loved that!💙
My only complaints would be that the middle section started to drag and some things were so unrealistic that it made me 🙄.
No doubt about it that Farrell is a very talented author and I look forward to reading more of his books asap!

This was a rather quick thriller read.

There was a lot going on in this book, a lot of little players and quick comments that snowballed into bigger concepts. Overall this book was a little bit messy in my opinion, this feels like a debut novel that the author wanted to include all of their favorites thriller hooks about mistaken identity, hostage situation, past history, and framing another person for a crime.

It was an interesting read but I don't think I would read this one again.
