Unlike many authors, I haven't been writing stories all my life. I've been too busy living life.
My travels took me from the fjords of Norway to the southern tip of New Zealand. In between, I've worked in so many different towns I've lost count. I've shoveled cow shit, mustered sheep, been polite to customers, traded insults with politicians and need to be forgiven on occasions when I get confused as to who needs what where. Now that I'm settled in Sydney, Australia, my real-life experiences can morph with my fertile imagination and create fiction which I hope readers will enjoy.
My philosophy on posting reviews is to recommend books I like which I think other people may not read and state why I like them. These are only the tip of the iceberg of books I read. If I do post a negative review, it's because there is some craft aspect (usually) that, to me, prevents the book from reaching its full potential. Books I straight out don't like or don't finish, don't even get a mention, as they may be someone else's cup of tea.

His whole face had changed from the moment I'd handed him the camera. Back near Connie's house, apart from the brief flash of grief, his expression had been devoid of emotion. Now there was full focus. After a while the intermittent glimpses of almost frightening intensity whenever he lowered the Pentax became too much for me, so I gazed out to sea instead.

"You're probably just like all the others--see the outside and assume the rest."
"But it's the outside that interests me. Not that I wouldn't love to get closer acquainted with what's underneath." His voice dropped to a sexy drawl as he uttered his last words.

"Sometimes you don't have to jump off a cliff to die. You can die inside little by little and still appear to be alive on the outside. That's how it was for me. I hid myself here away from the world. I thought I'd lost the capacity to love and live. (…)

122 very good pages. A story about grief and the right of every man to mourn a loss however they see fit. A story also about loyalty and critically scrutinizing their own self.

I would have loved to read a longer story because let's face it, Nat is a gorgeous and very intriguing hunk and I have a weak spot for artistic main protagonists. Photography is something very intimate and sensual and I felt irrevocably drawn to our sexy lead character. Also, I wanted to see more of Daniel and Nat as a couple; Caught hardly spanned 48 hours of their lives and I wasn't ready to let them go yet. To balance out the somewhat melancholic and sad atmosphere of Caught, A.B. wrote an excellent scene when Daniel did a great drag performance. Thanks for putting a goofy grin on my face, sweetie.

“Oh, sweetie, you’ve made my day and I haven’t even started taking the hormones yet.”

Minor quibbles
Maybe due to the shortness of Caught, there's a bit too much insta-feel thrown into the story and everything happened so fast. On the other hand, I must say it was beautifully done and very engaging. The secrecy bugged me when Daniel didn't want to tell Nat why he approached him. Although the reasoning was understandable and the ensuing resolution was fine by me.

Caught was my second read by A.B. Gayle. Fact is, I really like her writing style and the way I bond so easily with her characters leaves (almost) nothing to be desired. More please.

Loved it so much a beautiful and gorgeous romance with so many layers and treasures to uncover. Daniel absolutely smashed it with that brilliant diva queen performance it truly was perfectly done and hilarious too, exactly what was needed that little bit of fun to lift the mood. Thanks Td for the rec it was a lovely romance even if there were a few tears shed. Highly Recommended!

I happened to snag this novella awhile back when it was a freebie. Safely tucked away in my ‘need to read’ collection it began to gather dust. Feeling guilty for the neglect, I pushed it to the front of the list. Now I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I think it was the blurb that left me feeling ‘meh’. It didn’t snag my attention or swoon me in any way. It should be noted that suicide is definitely a factor here, but it’s more the emotional aspect and the recovery of the survivors that is addressed.

You see, Daniel plays more than just a Good Samaritan. Connie helps him don his wings and he swiftly soars in during the final moments of a tortured soul’s internal deliberation. He offers a smile, a helping hand or simply becomes the person that is ‘there’ when life seems completely hopeless. Truly an angel.

When he dashes down to aid a stranger they believe to be in danger, he finds that he was wrong about this one. This one is different. Tis true that this man is blanketed in grief, but he is not preparing for his silent goodbyes. He is most certainly in pain, yet he is not teetering on the edge. Quickly the power shifts and Daniel finds himself in deep water.

Deep. Compact. Genuine.

I was captivated by the profound depth of the characters. I found the drag scene a refreshing reprieve from the melancholy of Taylor’s life. I am not well versed with photography yet thoroughly enjoyed this connection they shared. Artists are so damn sexy. I was drooling over Taylor too.

There is much I would love to touch on, but fear spoiling would occur. I'm not exactly sure what I felt was missing, but I felt a void. The conclusion was almost too tidy, but I am pleased with the final scenes.

Allow me to say this….set in Sydney Australia; a multiracial couple is brought together under unusual circumstances. They both take a risk. It takes them to places they are scared shitless to be. Sometimes we are forced to face our greatest fears to receive our greatest gifts.

A gripping read that’s off the beaten path. If you’re up for it, I suggest dusting off the bunnies if you've been saving it like I was, or adding it to your list.

As I wrote this book. I really shouldn't rate or review it. I do however want to say how indebted I am to my beta-readers Kei Chan for helping me find the right cover image and Don and Kate for steering me away from the cliff edge, keeping me to the path. Thanks guys. Finally to Dreamspinner Press for publishing it and being so supportive along the way.

I know Author's aren't supposed to "explain" their books, but a number of people have commented about the unrealistic element of the short time frame, so I'll explain why I did that.

When I wrote "Caught" I had in mind something I witnessed as a child: A family friend was fishing on the beach with a light (5lb) breaking strain line when he hooked a massive fish. He spent half an hour "playing it", allowing it to run and then when tired reeling it in. In an early draft of "Caught" near the beginning I had Connie tell this story to Daniel, saying sometimes achieving a difficult "Catch" he has to be prepared for a long battle. As time went on during edits, more and more of this story got cut until it disappeared completely. But I did see the whole encounter between the two men as an echo of this.

In other words from the time the story started to the time it ended was one long "fishing duel". If the action had stopped at any one point and Daniel had gone home, I couldn't see their paths ever crossing again. The "fish wouldn't have been landed"

The interesting thing is that these criticisms have actually given me the meat, as it were, for the sequel. Can a relationship that started out so quickly, intensely last? Does Danny feel trapped?

What a wonderful book! I was 'caught' myself from the second Daniel spots a suicidal man lingering too long on a cliff's edge, but must change out of his "I'm two people short of a threesome" T-shirt before he goes to intervene.
He is quirky, unusual and totally captivating.
There is so much nuance in this story, so much detail, each weighted word works to put you in the hearts of this troubled pair.
I felt as if I were along from the ride when Daniel distracts a depressed, angry, suicidal Taylor away from what I think is The Gap, Sydney's most notorious jumping-off spot.
The dialogue crackles and the author captures the depth of emotions in both men from the second they connect at that lonely spot that has claimed so many lives.
The fishing line from which we, the reader, dangles is kept taut the entire time. There is not a wasted word or a single moment that doesn't seem authentic as Taylor and Daniel get to know one another.
I loved that although Daniel rescues Taylor, he too needs saving from his ethnic guilt and sexual shame.
I treasured this author's style and the way I squirmed, wondering if Taylor would be lured back to his dangerous perch by the sea. A lovely book, and an author to watch. She reeled me in and deposited me back into the real world wishing for more.

An excellent little story about a young man who goes out to try to be a Good Samaritan and lure away a possible suicide jumper, and finds himself falling for the man. Daniel is a wonderful character and Taylor, the man he tries to save from himself, has interesting depths and quirks. The sudden attraction between them, moving from pure sex to something more over a night of shared interests and emotions, is very well done. Another nice complete story that I wish had been much longer, just because the characters and chemistry were so good I didn't want it to end.

A very enjoyable story that takes place over a 24 hour period in Sydney, Australia. Daniel, a Chinese & US citizen is living with an elderly woman who's room looks out over a place that is commonly used by suicide jumpers. When she spots someone who appears to be very forlorn and a possible suicide attempt, Dannii assumes his role - that of an oriental tourist whose just strolling along taking pictures. When he connects with Taylor, he convinces Taylor to walk with him to a nearby lighthouse to take his picture. That begins the very interesting, very emotional weekend for these two young men.

I love the way the author told the story, the interactions between the men, the use of photography to express emotions and the snarky side of Dannii when he assumed his cross-dressing role to chase away Taylor's former partner.

This is a very good story, so much so that I wish it was a bit longer. I really enjoyed these two MCs and would love to see more of them.

Very moving story. I must say, I was hesitant to read this, but after reading the blurb, part of me pressed to just go for it... I tend to avoid stories focusing on depression or suicide (for me, angsty stories should come with a warning label). I'm glad I did not avoid CAUGHT. I would've missed out on an amazing read.

I loved the complexity of the characters, depths I had to peel away in order to get to know more about them as I went along. Gayle's writing was near flawless, which was a plus. But the story I found profound on a number of levels. Every emotion surrounding grief was explored and yet the author found a way to bring the story around in the end with a camera, a pair of stilettos, a fish tale, and a mix of truth and humor that was perfect and made the journey well worthwhile.

Definitely a recommended read.

Loved it!! The blurb gives the impression of an easy read, but it isn't.

Daniel is a funny, sweet and caring person. Due to tragic events, Daniel meets Taylor who is still mourning for the loss of a friend. During the whole read, I had the feeling of sadness and loneliness living in both characters. And guilt!! Daniel's guilt for being gay in an Asian family and Taylor's guilt that he couldn't save his friend. The turning point for me was when Daniel decides to rescue Taylor from his ex Graham. I laughed so loudly during that scene, living it completely!!

I don't want to spoil the book for you. It's a short, but really good story that made me smile at the end.

This is a tiny bit below 5, but since I don't have that option here...
Masterful, skilled, smooth-flowing writing. Two multi-layered, finely drawn characters - Danii was deliciously sassy and yet so thougtful, while Taylor had this stick up his ass but wasn't above looking at things from a different perspective. Instant lust turning into
instant love isn't a plot I'm overly fond of; at least they didn't IMMEDIATELY commit. All in all a very good and entertaining read, totally likeable characters and some hilariously funny lines.

Most shorter length books leave me frustrated, but this was wonderful. I admire the skill it takes to say so much with so few words, every sentence adding to the story perfectly. I like that we see more of Daniel and Taylor in Leather + Lace, and I hope we see more of them in future books.

The layers, as other reviewers have mentioned are a light touch, more like semi-transparent chiffon veils falling on each page one at a time. Something hidden is uncovered only to have something else hidden. You have to patiently lift each veil because you already know there's something worth waiting for with each revelation.

Gayle's depiction of Daniel, a 'banana' (that's what we call westernised Orientals - yellow outside, white inside! :P) is accurate in that you can't tell he's any different from a Caucasian if the author didn't tell you. Even better - there are no glaring mistakes unlike Outlined in Ink.

Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world (just my opinion, you understand) and The Heads was one of my fav spots despite the tourists. Caught certainly reminded me of them. The touches of subtle humor in this short story were a treat and had me smiling even as I tried to figure out the complex man that Taylor is. There's so much more I want from these two men's story!

If I had any complaint, it would be that I'd have preferred the story to take place over a few more days. Because Taylor is such a strong character with so much in him to uncover and examine, I did feel some unease at his insistence on Danii ("like Kylie Minogue's sister") not leaving though they'd only just met. But it's a tiny "complaint" if one at all. I was too enamoured, I think, of the wonderful memories of Sydney, having visited it often and loved it so much I bought an apartment at the tip of High Street facing Kesterton Park (No. 183) at the edge of the water. Danii, with his own issues to grapple with, was a perfect foil for Taylor and I foresee interesting times ahead for this couple.

Thank you, Ms Gayle, for Caught. May I have more, please?

I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy this book. As the blurb says, Danny and his landlady/friend, Connie, work together to thwart suicidal people from throwing themselves from the cliff that their ocean-side home sits next to. Apparently it’s a popular jumping spot for the desperately unhappy.

While suicide is definitely a part of the plot, it’s really about this lovely young Asian man who has convinced himself that he must hide his real self from the world. Danny grew up in a very traditional (read repressive) family where the other half of him, Dannii, who loves dresses, heels, and makeup, had no place. Estranged from his family, he has yet to meet that special someone who will accept all of him.

Taylor looks like a jumper. But is he? As the short story unfolds we find out that he is more than meets the eye. The physical connection between Danny and Taylor is immediate, explosive, but a more complicated connection raises this above quick smut. There is some real depth to Taylor and what brings him to the cliff in front of Danny’s home.

I have to add that I really liked the use of photography in the story, how it is used to ‘catch’ the guys’ interest in each other— it’s the foundation for their common interests— how it is used to expose those hidden depths. Very effective.

The fact that we go from cliff-side to hot flirtation, to finding acceptance and the promise of love, within about one hundred pages is remarkable, really. On the flip-side, the length is the one thing that works against the plotting— everything happens very quickly, within twenty-four hours, and the ending is a bit abrupt. But for a short story, this is very well made.

Extra points for the Australian setting and the interracial romance.

A. B. Gaye was a new author for me. I approached this book full of anticipation as the person who recommended it to me was someone whom I trusted to steer me in the direction of a good read. I could not have been more wrong--a good read??? No, a FABULOUS read!! This was a soft, romantic story of two lives that had been broken by loss, regret, and ex-lovers who had failed to see their worth. Both MC's, Danny and Taylor, ebb and flow onto the page with back stories that have shaped their lives and eaten away at their ability to trust another with that which they hold most dear--the love in their hearts. They meet cliff-side, Danny on the mission set by an endearing old Landlady to save what they both think may be a suicide attempt about to happen. Little does Danny know that he, not Taylor, will be the one to jump off a cliff--the plunge landing him either alone once again or safely in the arms of the man he thought to save.

There was so very little not to like in this novel--it was sweet and filled with tenderness and moments of heart-wrenching sadness. A.B. Gaye has gained a new fan this day--and deservedly so. And my friend, at goodreads? She is a gem--what more can I say except thank you Mammarella for the book!

It's amazing to see what this author could do in 122 pages with a story that takes place in roughly 36 hours.

Daniel, so sweet and willing to help. Taylor, fierce and bossy. Connie, the "mastermind" behind it all. Graham, so hateful and perfectly put in his place by Dannii. Ahhh, Dannii. My only regret upon finishing this story is that I would have liked to spend more time with her. The scene with Graham and Taylor is worth putting on film. I'd pay good money to see it acted out by someone with talent. Meow!

All the drama, the angst, the jokes and tears, perfectly tied up with a bow at the end. It all comes together, makes sense, feels true and good when you finish reading. The lesson is well-learned, by the characters and the reader. All of this without ever feeling contrived or unrealistic.

This story proves my belief that, just because it's fiction, doesn't mean it can be completely unreasonable. Talent can make fiction believable and enjoyable. It can be an escape without having to suspend disbelief.

Highly recommended.

This is an enjoyable shorter length story that doesn't feel incomplete. It has a nice location, Sydney Heads in Australia, atmosphere & a slight suspenseful air about it that makes you want to learn more about the characters. It takes place over a short space of time so it does have an instant love feel to it and Taylor's intensity & refusal to let go of Daniel would probably come across as a little scary in real life. But there's a dreamy quality to the story that makes this work. I read the author's explanation on why she chose to write it this way-interesting. Also she did write she was considering a longer follow up sequel. Don't see any new notes on this so I'm not sure that's still the case. But if you're looking for a quick read that still has some substance, this should fill the bill.

This story was a pleasure to read. Lots of emotion and heartache and ultimately a sense of hopefulness. There are also touches of humour and quirkiness.

I enjoyed the development of the characters over a very brief period as they open up to each other. It provides an interesting view of stereotypes and outward appearances, and looking beneath the surface. The detail provided by the photography and glimpses of emotion caught on camera, added another layer to the story.

This novella deals with suicide, both prevention and ramifications,
"Sometimes you don't have to jump off a cliff to die. You can die inside little by little and still appear to be alive on the outside." but also gives hope for a brighter future. "...and out of the blue, you came along, sharing my interests, making me laugh. You made me think life might be worth living again."

I liked the whole setting - I think it was a brilliant idea. The connection between Danny and Taylor is intense and sometimes even a bit too much. Maybe the story didn't have to come to a conclusion so fast. The two characters were interesting enough to take their time.
More to like: secondary characters (Connie could have had more space!), sex scenes (surprise, surprise, I didn't skip them which means they were well written and were an integral part of the story), interracial relationship (there are so few in books out there!), very well written serious issues (suicide).
On the other hand - Taylor's behaviour was so predatory at times he was really creepy.
Conclusion: An interesting story. My recommendation: Read it.

Although I usually don't choose to read shorter novels unless they're part of a series, this was chosen for me for a challenge. And I'm very glad it was.

Caught is a very good to excellent M/M romance novel set in Sydney, Australia. The main characters have excellent depth, and it is well written . Despite a story timeline of less than 24 hours, the author manages to make the rapid development of love seem possible, as the characters are thrust into a whirlwind of emotions, triggered by the collision of the past and the present.

Warning: the plot is based around suicide and its effect on those left behind, although it also looks at the prevention of suicide too. People who find suicide difficult to deal with may want avoid this novel.

As a novella I expected the events in the story to move quickly. The time frame is very short and the depth of the emotions the characters feel for one another moved as expected with in the time frame of a novella.

The characters are well developed, interesting, fun, sad and intense. The story revolves around suicide and the aftermath and how it affects those left behind. I liked the way the story started out vague regarding Connie's reasons for watching the cliff and why Danny is helping her. These were explained during the story. I also thought the way everything was pulled together at the end was a nice touch. Yes, it was fast and may seem unrealistic to some but it worked for me with the heavy underlying storyline an HEA was definitely appreciated.

I loved it, and found the strong connection believable. It had great internal consistency, so everything made sense within the context of the story. Except...it was a little too insta-lovey at the end for me. Either it needed to end with "we have a great connection we want to explore and see where it can go" or it needed to be longer to allow time for the connection to develop into love.

A truly beautiful novella that packs an emotional wallop. Daniel assists an elderly lady in an 'unofficial' suicide prevention program she runs from her home. The window she watches out of faces a cliff and from her vantage point she looks out for potential suicide risks; she sends Daniel if a person's actions trigger a 'red flag' and Daniel does his best to try to get that person the proper help.

It's in such a situation that Daniel meets Taylor. Using the usual methods Daniel tries to assess whether Taylor is really in need of help. His ruse seems to help and he manages to befriend Taylor. Daniel starts to doubt himself when he realizes his attraction to Taylor, especially when it's reciprocated.

Feeling an instant connection, Daniel struggles because he can't reveal the real reason for his approach; but he wants to help Taylor, who is obviously going through a loss. It's when they've reached some sort of impasse that a person from Taylor's past brings everything to light. It's this event that finally pushes Taylor to come to terms with what he lost, but it's Taylor that makes Daniel face the fact that he needed saving too.

I truly loved this novella (and the cover, the guy is just beautiful and fits Daniel's character perfectly), although short at 122 pgs. it is very well written and I felt for the character's pain and insecurities. Daniel especially was truly likable to me because he had hidden himself so much in an unconscious effort to please his conservative parents. Taylor is self assured and I loved the fact that he fights so hard to make Daniel realize that he can be himself. To me they fit very well together. I wish this author would let us into Daniel's & Taylor's life sometime in the near future-I'd love to read more about them.

I liked the premise of this book. Daniel lives near a cliff edge and works with his invalid landlady to help talk people down if they look like they might be contemplating suicide. Typically Daniel affects the aspect of a tourist since people are more inclined to open up to strangers that they know they will never bump into again.

This story revolves around Danny and his interaction with his latest "subject", Taylor. Taylor stares glumly at the cliff edge and Danny convinces Taylor to talk to him and interact. What Danny doesn't expect is to make a connection with this mysterious stranger. The problem is, their initial interaction is based on a lie and on a caricature of a person that Danny has made up.

I felt that the character development in this novella was excellent. The story was pretty short, but I didn't feel cheated at all. The story was decent, but it was really the connection between the characters and all of the learning that they did about each other over just a short amount of time. There were so many interesting facets of both Danny and Taylor's characters that I felt I was learning something new with every page.

I will always prefer a full length novel to a novella and I wish that Danny and Taylor learned about each other over a longer period of time.

Now this was good! I spent a sleepless night baby-sitting Rupert who is so not well and will visit the Vets this afternoon. Another Freebie download courtesy of DreamSpinners Press and unlike "Between Love and Honor", this novellette was extremely good.
Daniel, born in Australia to HK Chinese parents moves to the US as a child and returns to Australia as a young man. To take advantage of cheaper apartment rental, he assists an elderly lady, Connie in her "Suicide watch" from her apartment window overlooking the Sydney Bridge. Because Connie is so frail she relies on Daniel to disguise himself as a tourist and talk down the potential suicide victims before they get to the stage of throwing themselves from the bridge. In the past the police didn't get there quickly enough when Connie had called. Taylor, sitting mournfully on a bench beside the bridge, they suspect as being a potential victim. The story takes place over the space of approximately eighteen hours.
What a hot and poignant story ensues and all loose ends are tied up professionally and with great expertise by the author.
Truely a great read, just wish it had been longer.

such a touching and intimate story that let's the reader feel hopeful from beginning to end and rewards with an almost expected, but still perfectly sweet ending.

the sex was hot although very much not the focus of this story.

this is not a hardcore erotica or bdsm story. it does contain shadows of dominance and intimated kinks, but i wouldn't say they were primary in this at all.

this is a M/m *romance* and a very well written one. the darkness in this story has nothing to do with sex, kink, bdsm, or fetishes... any darkness comes from the underlying theme of why Danny has donned his role as "tourist".

it was sad, deep, raw, and moving throughout the story, but it also contained much humor and enjoyment that gave insight to the joy the main characters were hoping to achieve/recover.

my favorite line was, "“Sometimes you don’t have to jump off a cliff to die. You can die inside little by little and still appear to be alive on the outside."

i did love this story and would recommend to anyone wanting a sweet story of love, hope, and redemption.

This is the first book I've read by A.B. Gayle, and definitely NOT THE LAST!! This book tackled the very real problem of depression, loss, suicidal ideation, and the real-life struggle of how to go on with your life, when you feel you have to redefine yourself but don't know how or where to start. Both of the men in this story were hiding, allowing the demise of their true persona(s) in the wake of incredible hurt. The rescue of Taylor by Daniel was also the rescue of Dannii by Nat---both men unable to allow the other to be lost in the miasma over the cliff, and thus embracing their total nature. Even though this is told by Daniel's POV, you can truly get a feel for Taylor's POV in Daniel's eyes, both literally, and figuratively (using the photographs in the story). The sensuality and intimacy was laced throughout the book from start to finish, and the sex scenes added to the beauty and tenderness of their evolving story, while not distracting the reader. BRAVA, A.B.!!! I eagerly search for more of your stories :D

I enjoyed this piece when I beta read it. I'm looking forward to seeing what changes have been made. It will be like reading it for the first time again.

It was a pleasure reading how Daniel and Taylor opened up and blossomed under each other's care the first time I read "Caught." But I must say that there was even more depth with the final cut along with a nice sense of humor. Dannii was probably my favorite character.

The author's command of language and story telling makes the book a delight to read. None of that awkwardness that can make a good story line hard to follow to the end. Look for even more quality work from A. B. Gayle.

I have no difficulty recommending this story to everyone who enjoys m/m.

Favorite new line: ‎"This guy could have posed for one of those Sexy Bad Boy apps on Facebook." <-- I LOVE it! In fact I think that he did!!!

This was an interesting and well-written book. I liked how it observed the dramatic unities of time and place: it is set within a 24-hour period, within a handful of locations in a Sydney suburb. Both main characters - Daniel and Taylor - are intriguing, each with layers they are reluctant to peel away. Yet an intense situation leads to them each, one by one, dropping their defences and making an unexpected connection. Their mutual attraction adds complications but holds out hope of a resolution as well.

All in all: Well done, AB!
