Rosemary Jansz Navaratnam Rogers Kadison

Rosemary Jansz was born on 7 December 1932 in Panadura, British Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka), she was the oldest child of Dutch-Portuguese settlers, Barbara "Allan" and Cyril Jansz. Her father was a wealthy educator who owned three posh private schools. She was raised in colonial splendor: dozens of servants, no work, summers at European spas, a chaperone everywhere she went. A dreamy child, she wrote her first novel at eight, and all through her teens scribbled madly romantic epics in imitation of her favorite writers: Sir Walter Scott, Alexandre Dumas and Rafael Sabatini.

At 17, Rosemary rebelled against a feudal upbringing and went to the University of Ceylon, where she studied three years. She horrified her family by taking a job as a reporter, and two years later marrying with Summa Navaratnam, a Ceylonese track star known as "the fastest man in Asia." The marriage had two daughters. Unhappily, he often sprinted after other women. Disappointed with her husband, in 1960, she moved with her two daughters and took off for London.

In Europe she met her future second husband, Leroy Rogers, an african-american. "He was the first man," she recalls, "who made me feel like a real woman." After getting a divorce from her first husband, she married Rogers in his home town, St. Louis, Missouri. They moved with her family to California, where she had two sons. Six years later, when that marriage broke up, Rosemary was left with four children to support on her $4,200 salary as a typist for the Solano County Parks Department. In 1969, in the face of a socialist takeover of Ceylon, her parents fled the island with only ?100, giving Rosemary two more dependents. At 37, the rich girl from Ceylon was on her uppers in Fairfield.

Every night for a year, Rogers worked to perfect a manuscript that she had written as a child, rewriting it 24 times. When she was satisfied with her work, she sent the manuscript to Avon, which quickly purchased the novel. That novel, ''Sweet Savage Love'', skyrocketed to the top of bestseller lists, and became one of the most popular historical romances of all time. Her second novel, ''Dark Fires'', sold two million copies in its first three months of release. Her first three novels sold a combined 10 million copies. The fourth, ''Wicked Loving Lies'' sold 3 million copies in its first month of publication. Rosemary Rogers became one of the legendaries "Avon Queens of Historical Romance". The difference between she and most of others romance writers is not the violence of her stories, it is the intensity. She says: "My heroines are me", and certainly her life could be one of her novels.

In September of 1984, Rosemary married a third time with Christopher Kadison, but it was a very brief marriage and they soon began to live apart. "I'd like to live with a man," she admits, "but I find men in real life don't come up to my fantasies. I want culture, spirit and sex all rolled up together."

Today single, Rosemary lives quietly in a small dramatic villa perched on a crag above the Pacific near Carmel. Her four children are now away from home and she continues to write.

Rosemary passed away at the age of 87 on November 12, 2019 in Carmel, California where she called home since the early 1970s.

Another of my favorite RR books. Sex traffic from Russia, to England, Egypt. A fantastic antihero that I can't help but melt for, a naive sister, and some evil villians.

3.2 A lot was packed into this 432 pg romance- from Russia to London to Cairo. I'm trying to figure out why I wasn't bowled over by this interesting, well written story. I think it stemmed from Emma,(the heroine desperate to find her kidnapped sister) I liked her but not all of her character traits seemed to be consistent.

Dimitri sendiri punya misi lain selain membantu Emma.

Dimitri punya motif kuat utk membalas dendam pd ayahnya. Tampaknya di pertengahan cerita, Dimitri nyaris mengambil keputusan bhw usahanya utk balas dendam akan sia-sia, hingga datang kejadian yg memaksanya mengambil keputusan yg tepat.

Sekian dulu review saya.

Scoundrel's Honor by Rosemary Rodgers - whose writing was comparatively speaking on a purely technical level far and away the best of the bunch. (I tried to read the Connie Brockaway novel afterwards and couldn't deal with all the syntax errors and choppy writing structure. Or simplicity of the word choice. And that was just the first page. May try again later...after I read another Rodgers...this one is about a woman posing as a highwayman to rob from the rich/give to the poor and the gentleman agent attempting to bring her to justice to save his kidnapped brother's life. Rodgers' was influenced by the works of Alexandre Dumas- apparently. There's definitely a Dumas flair in her books and her dialogue is good.) Rodgers clearly has worked hard at the technical aspects of her craft. The typos I found were few and far between and clearly the fault of e-book digitization.

Another bit? This is not your momma's Rodgers. There's no rape in this book. Mention and referred to, yes. The threat of rape? Present - realistic back then, also true of all romance novels I've read, unfortunately. But no actual rape. Neither the heroine nor any of the main characters are raped. It's not a rapemance. Also it's a bit subversive in that the heroine saves the hero a few times, she's independent, and he's a bit of an outlaw, and not a "manly" man so much as sleek - like Spike. Rodgers clearly was a Buffy/Spike fan. Her heroine? An aging spinster. Her hero - an aging pirate.

Rosemary Rodgers, who was once known along with Kathleen Woodliss for the "bodice ripper" romance novel where the heroine is often raped, many times by various sorts, has oddly in her later novels not only commented on what she did in the earlier ones, but jumped completely and utterly away from it.

Example conversation from"Scondrel's Honor" written in 2010:

Emma was a virgin before becoming my lover," he grudgingly confessed.
"You did not -"
"Force her? No," he snapped. "But in her mind I did seduce her. It appeased her conscience to tell herself that I took advantage of her innocence."
"And now?"
Dimitri shifted uneasily. What did the man want from him? A confession that his relationship with Emma had gone beyond a short tumble to ease his lust? That he needed her to be more than merely a reluctant lover?
"Now I wish her to accept her place in my bed because that is where she desires to be and not because I have lured her there," he muttered.

Don't remember that ever popping up in a Rosemary Rodgers novel before. Also this one has a plot, a headstrong and tough heroine who decidedly does not wish to be saved or give up her independence. It takes place in Russia and England directly after the Napoleon War. The heroine is hunting for her sixteen year old sister who ran off with two noblemen who promised the girl a life on the stage (when in reality they were planning white slavery - we don't follow the sister or see her life). The heroine is probably in her 20s or 30s (we aren't told, just aging spinster) and runs a coaching inn - after their parents have died. She journey's to St. Petersburg to seek the aid of a distant relative, who in turn sets her up with the hero - a dashing theif and the leader of the Russian underworld, who has his own score to settle with the men who kidnapped her sister. The book like all the others that I've read deals with the gender power imbalance. But Rodgers attacks it headon. At one point the heroine tells the hero - that as long as society does not protect women with their laws, or support them, they will be at the mercy of men. The heroine is a tiny woman = they always are in Rodgers books (I'm guessing Rodgers is tiny?). And at another point, the heroine thinks to herself - while it would be wonderful to let herself be seduced by the hero...she has to go back to lonely nights, that he will undoubtedly weary of her eventually and move on to someone else, leaving her ruined and alone. If she gives up her independence to him...financial and otherwise, she'll be worse off than she is now or when she started.

If you read some of Rodgers back history...the story has a ring of disturbing truth.

Rodgers was born in 1931 in Ceylon, Sri Lanka to Dutch-Portugese Settlers, and wealthy, sheltered. Then she married a football star who did not treat her at all well. They separated.
In the 1960s, she moved to St. Louis, Missouri and met and married an African-American Man, and moved to California. In 1969 - her teenage daughter found a manuscript that she'd rewritten 24 times since the age of 9. This was Sweet Savage Love - which her daughter got her to publish. Her marriage fell apart, and she supported herself and her four children all alone on a typist salary. Later she married a poet, that last four years. Now she's divorced and single in Conneticut and still writing and publishing at the age of 74/75.

Rosemary Jansz was born in 1932 in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. Her parents, Cyril and Barbara Jansz, were Dutch-Portuguese settlers who owned several private schools and were extremely wealthy. Rogers lived among many servants and was sheltered from much of the outside world. She began writing at age eight, and throughout her teens penned many romantic epics in the style of her favorite writers, Sir Walter Scott, Alexandre Dumas, père, and Rafael Sabatini.

After spending three years at the University of Ceylon, Rogers became a reporter, and soon married Summa Navaratnam, a Ceylonese rugby player and track star (who played for Ceylon against the 1950 British Lions and who was known as "the fastest man in Asia") Disappointed with her husband, Rogers moved with her two daughters to London in 1960.

In Europe, she met Leroy Rogers, an African-American from the United States, they married in his home town, St. Louis, Missouri and she moved her family to California, where they had two sons. The second marriage ended after eight years, and Rogers was left to support herself and four children on her salary as a typist for the Solano County Parks Department. The following year, in 1969, her parents came to live with Rogers.

Her third marriage, in September 1984, was to poet Christopher Kadison, 20 years her junior. It was not a marriage made in heaven and they soon began to live apart.

The four children of Rogers have grown and they have become independent. Rogers is single and makes her home in Connecticut, where she continues to write.

I'm guessing part of this is due to the times, and our collective tolerance for "rapemance" being somewhat "dwindled". And part due to Rodgers own experiences.

Ya ampun, saya langsung jatuh cinta sama Rosemary Rogers!

Mesti pakai strategi, ya to?

Eat that, Linley-Kirov!

So far I'm not impressed. It's like she got sucked into formula writing and has lost the passion I usually see between her characters.

So much of the passion from her earlier books was missing in this one. With the rigid point of view rules in force today the writing was almost sterile with the adherence to one point of view per scene.

It's been a long time since I've read any Rosemary Rogers and I "remember" being more thrilled with her books at the time.
While I enjoyed this book, I had a hard time not getting distracted and reading something more fast-paced. Once I buckled down to finish it, I found the second half more compelling.
Emma Linley-Kirov's, half English "peasant", sister has been persuaded to runaway to Moscow. So, Emma follows, asks aid of a distant relative and garners assistance from Dimitri Tipova, the Beggar Czar. Dimitri, the bastard son of an aristocrat, begotten by rape, is all to aware of the type of men who lured Emma's sister, and is more than willing to help her.
The adventure takes them from gaming hells in Moscow, to aristocratic soirees in London and the pasha's seraglio in Cairo.
So, will they succeed in recovering Emma's sister. And what or who will Emma chose, to return to Yabinsk, Caliph Rajih (who they met along the way) or Dimitri?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Quite complicated for a romance genre, it's rare but good. What I found unbelievable is Emma met not just one but three powerful, arrogant, handsome, rich-beyond-words men, and the three men actually liked her. I don't see any chemistry between Emma and Dimitri or Emma and Rajih so I am not convince of their triangle love story. It is obvious that Rajih was created just as an obstacle for Dimitri to have Emma and will have his own story, so I think he is an unnecessary character for this story

3.5 stars but rounding up

Since this was a reread I'll round up. I enjoyed this but it kind of lost me in Cairo and Emma was so adamant about remaining independent it got to be too much for me. Emma is a spinster who is doing her best to raise her ungrateful 16 y/o beautiful sister since they lost their father several years before. Anya, the sister, runs off with some men and Emma runs off to save her. Distant relatives in St Petersburg put her in touch with The Beggar Czar, king of the underworld and feared criminal. They don't start off well, but eventually they fall for each other and travel from St. Petersburg to London, then he chases her to Cairo. She picks up another suitor on the way, so now she has two wealthy, handsome men after her. Not bad for a prickly spinster! So, it gets a bit ridiculous but the rakish Beggar Czar and shrewish spinster tame each other and live happily ever after. I just wish there had been an epilogue with the sister crawling back begging forgiveness because I'm a lot pettier than our MCs

Bertahun-tahun menggeluti dunia hitam, Dimitri terbiasa melindungi wanita.

But she doesn't trust anyone.

Cuma begitu Rajih muncul dan ikut-ikutan memburu perdagangan wanita serta ikut-ikutan naksir Emma... huufft... rasanya jadi too much drama. Mana si Emma pasrah-pasrah aja kalau sama Rajih, beda kalau sama Dimitri.

Scoundrel's Honor by Rosemary Rogers
Dangerous Crime Overlord Aids A Lady In Need.................

Dimitri Tipova, crime overlord in St. Petersburg, Russia, agrees to aid the impossible Emma Linley-Kirov in the search for her abducted younger sister for one reason - revenge against the man who fathered him and killed his mother, but the young woman enchants the dangerous scoundrel like no other has done before.
Emma, to his chagrin, wants no part of his generous offer to become his mistress, and makes it clear that the goal of finding her sister is her priority, and Dimitri, no matter his effect on her, is merely the means to an end. The Beggar Czar seduces her body, but is unable to claim her trust, leaving the door wide open for another to attempt to do just that.

Rosemary Rogers has been writing romance novels for a long time and Scoundrel's Honor is one her her latest, published in 2010. Her first, Sweet Savage Love is on this Broad's TBR pile. Rogers created a wonderful storyline in Scoundrel's Honor, and I quite enjoyed her delicious criminal underworld hero, Dimitri, until the end of the book anyway. He became too good, too tame for me. Emma Linley-Kirov, however was for me, a disappointment. Written as a simple girl from the countryside skirting St. Petersburg, Emma was just too bold, too reckless, and too lucky for her to be believable, as her given personality was reserved and very conservative. The two halves of this lady just didn't mesh well within the story.

One highlight of this novel is Rogers' character, Rajih, a caliph of his people in Egypt. He remained a mystery, leaving the reader to guess if he was friend or foe to nearly the end of the novel while coming across as dark and seductive throughout to this Broad's delight. I'd like to read a story about him..........But I digress.

Scoundrel's Honor, by Rosemary Rogers is a well written novel, rich in description and emotion, and I enjoyed it despite the annoying Emma Linley-Kirov. Read it to experience romance, Rosemary Rogers style.

Emma, seorang gadis Rusia, kehilangan seorang adik bernama Anya.

This is a solid historical romance with the advantage of being set in an uncommon milieu to make sense as they travel. The book is set with two POVs - one of the hero and one of the heroine. This gives the author a chance to present feelings and motivations in a more well rounded way. Note that the POV isn't first person, though.

In all, I enjoyed the descriptions of Russia and appreciated that the author took us to a place we rarely get to go in historical romance novels. The writing was undemanding (in all honesty, it was a bit flat when compared to an author like Laura Kinsale) but I felt very much the usual for a Rosemary Rogers novel. It's the type of book you enjoy on a cold Winter night or sunny afternoon - as a way to pass the time pleasantly with two interesting characters as they face problems and get to know each other despite diversity.

I have read many of Rosemary Rogers books.....I have read many historical romances and this is the same as expected with a Russian twist...the men are gorgeous with golden eyes and the main female is feisty, tiny and looking for love in all the wrong places! This book is very typical of the genre...but these books are great when you just want to escape and not have to concentrate on detailed plots....great light read.
