In 1987 he published his first novel, Oracles and Miracles, the story of two sisters growing up in Christchurch before and during World War II. Since then he has written several fiction and non-fiction books.
Dear book I hate you Racist pervert pedo misogynist ass protagonist badly written you traumatized me
I cannot express how much I do not recommend this book How was this published? It certainly is a real page turner, I could not put it down, regardless of how much I wished I could have. I can compare it to when you are so frozen by shock and disgust in a horror movie that you find yourself sitting through the whole thing.
It makes me physically unwell and I cut my copy into millions of pieces and threw it in the bin.
This novel is written by a NZ established writer. The story is located in Shanghai as its title can tell with several scenes back to the narrator's home country. It deals with the relationship between a teacher and his student Jay as a main plot. I would say the description about Shanghai is vivid interpreted not only from a view of being a Westerner but from a local Chinese. But I would argue that some of the description, if not unnecessary, are not easy for a ESL reader to grasp. Therefore I failed in some parts of its beautiful writing. I think the ending of the story is quite surprising. It is not a bad story, anyway.
