Set in modern-day England the three siblings, Rupert, Anna, and Clara discover a Hidden door, unopened, unused and previously unseen. When eventually accessed a history unfolds before them. They time-travel and are transported to a desolate time of the second world war of 1945. There they find themselves in a makeshift hospital at the back of the house of their friend Noor. The room is scarcely furnished. There are soldiers. One who is very badly burnt, from head to toe. It is thought he is a soldier from North Africa or a spy? There is also an Indian air-pilot, with his leg and arm raised in a fixed awkward angle bandaged on an iron bed in a corner of the room. In the other corner, there is an English RAF captain, who has an injured arm and sports an eye mask. There are only two nurses, Margaret, but called Madge and Lydia, a rescued Jewish girl. Lydia suffers from a limp, sustained from a fall, dodging soldiers trying to shoot at her. She has seen much hardship and endured much trauma. They both attend to all the injured soldiers. The children can’t change the history of yesteryear, but they do begin to realise the importance of those terrible times. They introduce their simple games with today’s treats. The siblings grow learning and growing with each other.
