Man With The Screaming Brain

Rate this book
B-movie megastar Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, and Bubba Ho-Tep fame comes to comics with this adaptation of his upcoming feature film. With more talent than you could fit in his freakishly large chin, Campbell not only co-wrote the film with David Goodman, but directed and starred in it as well. However, in order to see his vision realized unadulterated by budgetary constraints, Campbell put the version of the script he wanted to shoot into the hands of artists Rick Remender and Hilary Barta. Man with the Screaming Brain tells the story of a wealthy American businessman determined to exploit the crippled economy of a former Soviet state torn between communist roots and capitalist greed. But when Campbell's character hits on the wrong gypsy girl, he soon finds himself in the grip of a mad scientist with a twisted brain-transplant scheme worthy of Dr. Frankenstein.

Bruce Lorne Campbell is an American actor, producer, writer and director. He is best known for his starring role as Ash in the Evil Dead trilogy of horror/slapstick movies, and has since become a B-movie icon.

His acting style is an "over-the-top" machismo that lends itself well to roles such as that of Ash Williams, whom Campbell himself has dubbed "an idiot and a jerk like the rest of us". This style is parodied in the film The Majestic where Campbell appears as Roland the Intrepid Explorer in the B movie Sand Pirates of the Sahara, written by Jim Carrey's screenwriter character. Campbell also excels at "reverse acting", a frequent filming technique of Sam Raimi's where action sequences are filmed in reverse of how they will appear in the film. Campbell offers advice about getting into the film industry on his website.

Campbell is well-known for his trademark sense of humor, which he often couples with deadpan (and somewhat sarcastic) comic delivery.

Based on Campbell’s movie of the same name, thought it was great, humorous with perfect dialogue, makes me want to see the movie again; but couldn’t really justify 5-stars for a short graphic novel.

I have this in the form of the original issues and it's a pretty cool little mad scientist comedy. It works better as a comic than it does a film (mainly because of budgetary constraints). Good for a laugh and should be enjoyed by fans of the weird.

Science & Vengeance!

I picked up the live action movie a while back because the king of B Movies, Bruce Campbell, was in it but I never really got a chance to see it. However when I discovered the comic was suggested I dug out the movie to finally watch it. Let me say it was...interesting but this is not a movie review but rather a commentary on the comic put out by Darkhorse Comics shortly after the creation of the SciFi channel movie. Just offensive enough to annoy and bother certain people this story of cultural stereotypes gone comically wrong meets science fiction when a series of unfortunate events lead to an American and an ex KGB agent join forces to even the odds against an extreme Tsundere.

Even though the comic and movie seem to have come out around the same time with the comic coming out only a few months later from what I understand there are some minor differences which are common enough in a movie adaptation but one thing I really enjoyed (since the live action had such a low budget versus what the comic could do) was the robot design in the story. Don't get me wrong the robot was comically cheesy in the live action and I doubt the scientist would have been able to afford such a sleek model in the comic but suspending disbelief is a must if you are ever going to enjoy this B movie monster. :)

I've been a Bruce Campbell fan since early high school days. It started with Evil Dead, then Army of Darkness, and ever little role Mr. Campbell has been in. He plays a wonderful Elvis. I've followed his films, books, and interviews. This is how I found out about the graphic novel.

This is much like the 2005 movie, Man with the Screaming Brain, which Bruce directed. The neat thing for me was I've watched the movie, read his interviews and books about the process in making the movie and the issues they had, like major culture shock. All this information came flooding back while reading the introduction by producer/writer David Goodman.

When reading the actual storyline I heard Bruce's voice with his character. It's like the movie so if you watch it you know everything that will happen, it's just in graphic novel form. This is a Frankenstein ripoff love story(ish) story.

I'm a big fan of the 50s camp scifi that this is a satire of, so it's right up my alley. It's got plenty of fun freaky science (somewhat like the good parts of Mars Attacks1) mixed with more dry campy dialogue than you can shake a stick at. I'm itching to see the movie now.

While I didn't expect much from this, it was still a bit of a letdown. The Bruce Campbell sarcasm and dumbwit is missing, and without this, there's no real need to check this out, besides the campiness, which is a little compelling, but not much.

This one doesn't really have the punch where it's needed. It's got to be funny. It isn't. Bruce on the page just doesn't pack the wallop that Bruce does on film. I guess this was one that the creators had a lot of fun putting together but for us, the hungry comic book peruser, it doesn't deliver.

Love the artwork. Dig the story. Also research. ;)

PS. Isn't it cool to be a comics creator.
