I was really looking forward to reading this book. A friend on Nocturne Romance Reads recommended it. Besides, what's not to like about a hunky pirate? But for me, the book was just "meh". I had trouble getting into it and it took me quite a while to get done. I think a lot had to do with the fact that there are two books before this one, and much reference was made to the previous books. I thought Nate was great, but Claire just annoyed the hell out of me. Yes, she was spirited, self-sufficient and had a hard past, but I just wanted to slap her for her attitude toward Nate.

i found all 5 books in this series well written and followed the same format. witty dialog, good characters, story you can cruise along with and the romance piece balanced. a few hot kisses, about 70% mark first love making scene and a few afterwards towards the last 30% (not as detailed ). i read the last book first and found that it was much better reading a second time after reading the first 4 books in their order (would recommend others to read the series in order, believe it would be more enjoyable). 4 out of 5

Nate Carter is ruthless and cunning. He learned at an early age to fend for himself and circumstances have led him to sailing the seas as the pirate Sam Steele. I must honestly admit that Nate had to grow on me as in the beginning I found him a bit harsh and rude towards Claire, but once I learned his back-story I totally warmed up to him.

Claire Gentry has also learned that the only one she can count on is herself. She’s tenacious, self-reliant, defiant and a fighter. Posing as a boy when she leaves her duplicitous marriage, she’s forced to survive on her own. On the hunt for independence she enters a poker game for a treasure map. However, the treasure map is not what she ends up with after the game.

Nate and Claire are forced to team up and go in search of a long-lost treasure, a treasure of which the map played an important role in their past. With the villain, who’s after the same treasure, in hot pursuit the childhood friends already have enough on their plate. But there’s also the matter of the young love they once shared and that was damaged when Nate abandoned Claire and Claire married someone else. Once upon a time they were best friends and each other's first love but meddling, misunderstanding, circumstances and betrayal has turned them adversaries in the hunt for a treasure that will change their lives forever.

It's been a serious while since I read a pirate-themed historical romance. So long that I don't even exactly remember when I did but I'm sure it was before I started reading my romance novels in English so at least 4 years ago. Reading A PIRATE'S POSSESSION I was reminded of how much I liked the pirate-themed historicals when I was younger: the adventure, the excitement, the danger, they all attribute to the romance in a unique way.

A PIRATE’S POSSESSION is written in an engaging style. Soon I was immersed in both the search for the treasure and the romance between Nate and Claire. Both were balanced out perfectly and I was thoroughly entertained. I really liked the dynamics between Claire and Nate and enjoyed watching the sparks fly every time they engaged in a battle of wits. The internal conflict between them is the age-old: she thinks he abandoned her and left her to fend for herself and with no choice but to marry a horrible man. He is angry and feels betrayed that she didn't wait for him as she promised. During the search for the treasure they start to reluctantly talk about it and slowly they come to understand each other’s point of view and take responsibility for their part in their conflict.

I also loved the secondary cast in this book and how Michelle Beattie incorporated them into the story of Nate and Claire. The different POVs from some secondary characters, including the villain's, kept it fresh and fast-paced, yet it never felt rushed.
It’s obvious that this book is one of a series as there’s some back-story that hints at the previous books and I must say that I am very tempted to get the first two books just to read the stories they are talking about in this one. However because I’ve read this book and know something that’s going to happen, I’m reluctant to do so.

The punch was in the end of the story. The conclusion was fast-paced, emotional and fitting and I enjoyed reading a pirate romance after so many years. It has sparked my wish to read more of them now. So if you like pirate-themed historicals, definitely check out Michelle Beattie’s pirates.

A "Not for Me" book rating
http://anotherlookbookreviews.blogspo...

Simply put, I just didn't enjoy A Pirate's Possession. I found the book lacking interesting characters and just plain boring. If I didn't have such a compulsion to finish a book when I start it, I would have put it down.

A Pirate's Possession seems to be the 3rd book in a series. It does not actually indicate that information on Goodreads or Amazon but there are definitely carry over characters from the previous two books. I am wondering if I had read those first two books, would my perception be different?

In A Pirate's Possession while reading about Nate it felt like he was an already established character and I felt no connection with him. Obviously Nate was a pirate (as the book is called A Pirate's Possession) but there was really no pirating in this story. There was a treasure map, a ship and a search for that buried treasure. Nate was also known as an infamous pirate, Sam Steele. However that name means nothing if reading A Pirate's Possession. Again I believe that all goes back to this being the third book in a series. I think I was missing out on a lot of assumptions the author was making regarding Nate's character. Hence I really didn't know him nor was really given the desire to be curious about him.

That takes me to our female lead, Claire. I could not allow for Nate's personality absence to be made up for by having a great female protagonist because quite honestly, I couldn't stand Claire. I thought I was going to love her as she dressed in men's garments and was really used to looking after herself. What she turned out to be in my mind was a whiny, selfish, unforgiving drama queen and even though I didn't really know Nate, I felt he had to deserve better than Claire as his love interest.

My favourite stories are when the lead characters have a childhood history and I was very disappointed. With Nate and Claire being so supposedly in love and having such a close past relationship, they sure had big misunderstandings and little room for forgiveness. It just frustrated me.

I adore historical type of romances. I love the addition of items that are historically accurate and the overall feel of being whisked away back in time. Although the story was set in 1660, it could have been 1960. There was just nothing to place me in the year 1660. Yes there was a ship but nothing really to distinguish this ship from being a pirate ship vs a regular modern day sailing vessel. Simply the need to light a candle to see isn't enough for me.

To wrap up, I didn't like the characters, the lack of an actual pirate or historical type of story line, the bland romance and being a little bit lost with the introduction of characters near the end of the book (that held obvious importance from the previous two books). Serves me right I suppose for discovering that I was reading a book two stories into a series. If I had known that going in, I wouldn't have started it. Even so, most books of this nature should be able to be read as stand alones but it didn't work for me.

A Pirate’s Possession is a swashbuckling escapade populated with a fantastic cast of characters, locations and non-stop action revolving around Nate Carter and Claire Gentry’s quest for treasure, love and resolutions to the past.
Raised in the same orphanage, Nate and Claire grew up providing each other solace, friendship and eventually love. But when Nate leaves to make his living with the intention of reclaiming Claire, he returns just as she weds another. Sacrificing herself into marriage to save the one place she called home, she believes Nate has abandoned her as her father did in search of the infamous treasure of the Santa Francesca whose half of the map she secretly holds.
An action-packed adventure that starts from page one, A Pirate’s Possession is a clever premise chock full of unfulfilled promises and yearnings pitting two adult orphans against the world to dig for treasure – one aboard a ship as the enigmatic pirate Sam Steele and the other to forage in the world on her own disguised as a man.
Accustomed to the solitary life of caring for herself Claire’s scrappy ruse is discovered when she loses the last of her money in a card game during a desperate bid to regain the other half of the treasure map.
Fate has brought Nate and Claire together in this card game and now, the two halves of the map and presumably one heart are reunited seeking the one prize that can set them free. Making a pact to solve the riddle that is the map, Claire and Nate with the help of his crew, maroon themselves on the deserted island of Isla de Hueso in search of this inestimable cache of gold and gems.
Conflict and mounting tension between the couple is added to when Nate’s nemesis James Blackthorn, ratchets up the stakes by hunting for the treasure and them. Snappy interchanges and fluid action keep things moving at a comfortable pace ably assisted by the spare use of backstory and narrative.
Scene settings and descriptions are expertly revealed through dialogue and action that because they are so tightly woven, immediately place the reader into the situation propelling the story forward. Crisp dialogue amongst Nate’s crew and rich characterization leave readers wanting for nothing but more time with them. It’s evident that Beattie clearly had this series, plots and characters well in hand before she ever put pen to paper. As a result, readers are rewarded with a wonderful, engrossing voyage transporting them back in time more than three centuries when men and women forcibly carved their own destinies despite the restrictions of society.
This is the third book in Beattie’s pirate series and while A Pirate’s Possession reunites the triumvirate of Blake Merritt, and Luke Bradley with Nate and his first mate, the lovable dwarf, Vincent, the book stands solid as its own story. The characters are so sensually drawn with powerful emotion and action so riveting; readers will eagerly look forward to reading the first two books in this trilogy.

A Pirate’s Possession by Michelle Beattie
Historical Romance – Dec. 7th, 2010
4 stars

Claire Gentry has been searching for the other half of a treasure map for many years. Destitute and desperate, she gambles all she has in a game of cards for the ultimate prize - the other half of the map. Alas, she loses and that half goes to Nate Carter, and old flame who left and never came back. Nate, on the other, despises Claire for not waiting for him and marrying another man instead. Reluctantly, they team up to find the treasure and discover to their chagrin, that they are still attracted to each other. Worse, hot on their trails is another treasure hunter who will do anything, even murder, to get the gold. Can they learn to love and trust each other again?

A well written pirate romance is a rarity. Beattie’s latest novel has it all - romance, action, and two very memorable characters. Claire and Nate are both complex characters with many layers. She is spunky and tough, but not unreasonable or overtly stubborn for the sake of being stubborn. Claire has a difficult life, and she makes the best out of it. Nate, like Claire, is also a survivalist, desperately searching for a home. When these two clash, literally and figuratively, it is a tempestuous and exciting read. Beattie makes their chemistry believable and, towards the end, heartwarming. You really believe that these two are meant for each other.

To top it off, Beattie is a wonderful writer whose pacing isn’t slow or too rushed. The story doesn’t feel dragged or forced; it simply flows. Herr skill with words are simply amazing. In one of the pages, I was captivated by her description of a sunrise. I could totally see the scene in my mind!

In short, if you are rooting around for a pirate romance, do give Beattie’s A Pirate Possession’s a try. It simply is a treasure.

Claire Gentry has disguised herself as a pirate and a lad for many years in her quest. Years ago, her father was determined to find a hundred year old pirate treasure, so he left Claire at an orphanage vowing to return for her when he found the treasure. He never came home, but Claire remembered vividly the half of treasure map her father had. Now, she is determined to find the other half of the map, the treasure, and her father.

Nate Carter is a pirate who yearns to set his sails and live on land in a house he recently built. But first, he wants to find the treasure that Claire and he used to talk about when they were both at the orphanage. Winning the other half of the treasure map in a game of cards, he had no idea he had beat Claire, who was dressed as a filthy lad. But when someone is determined to get the map or the treasure at any cost, he allows Claire aboard his ship.

Claire and Nate loved one another when they were at the orphanage, but Nate left to make a living, promising Claire he would return for her. Claire, tired of waiting, marries another, not knowing that Nate had returned and left immediately, heartbroken Claire did not wait for him. Claire hardens her heart against the return of those feelings as the two of them work together to find the treasure, and her father before the pirate following them does.

Nate, even knowing Claire is married, cannot squash his feelings and love for Claire. The two of them may both want the treasure for their own reasons, but can they push them aside for a possible future?

A PIRATE'S POSSESSION is a high seas adventure filled with passion, intrigue, and buried treasure. Claire and Nate compliment one another perfectly, but they both have secrets and if revealed, could hurt any possible future together. Ms. Beattie writes a thrilling pirate romance that will set your senses afire!

This book is bittersweet.

We see Nate's past in a way that we hadn't before. He grew up in an orphanage, where he met Claire.
Claire's father had left to find treasure, putting her in the orphanage.

In the present day, disguised as a boy Claire puts her money up to play a game of cards for the other half of the map to the treasure.
Nate wins.

Nate and Claire end up together looking for the treasure.

What I liked:
Nate and Claire's past mistakes and issues are slowly worked past and understandable. Neither character's mistakes are ignored or treated as lesser than the other. I liked that they worked together well and that their romance wasn't as if they'd never been apart - even after the big misunderstanding was revealed.

What I didn't like:
Claire's irrational hatred of pirates. She is rabid that she hates pirates and when Nate reveals he is Sam Steele, I thought she was cruel. She was also plain mean to Samantha about the money. I also loathed the way she was in love with Nate, until she discovered he was a pirate - it made it seem that she didn't love Nate at all.

Other:
I'm a little sad that Nate, Blake and Luke all live on different islands, this is not set in the 21st century where a trip is days at the most, these people who are good friends live weeks of travel apart, since they luckily have boats at their disposal.
the bitter part of the sweet ending.

According to my last check (June '12) Beattie is working on a fourth book and so I will wait.

I loved reading this book. Pirates are a passion of mine. I think I might have been one in a previous life. So when I had the chance to read about a woman who disguises herself as a man so she can sail the seas looking for a half of a map that will lead her to the treasure her father left her for, I couldn't resist. I'm not disappointed either. As I've often said, the universe works in mysterious ways.

It was fitting that Claire and Nate reunite after years, just in time to find the treasure they both seek. Loose ends are tied up and answers are finally revealed. This book has a small portion that will bring tears to your eyes but the ending is a happy one. The sex scenes were great and the action was nonstop. Readers are sure to relate to Claire's stubbornness. She would have to be self-reliant and hard to survive living among men for all that time. And the reason she wants the treasure so bad is a good one.

I'm a die-hard romance and I was cheering for Claire and Nate throughout the book. I constantly yelled at them for being so stubborn and not just saying what they were thinking from the get go. Sometimes, it's better to reveal what happened in the past, even though it's ancient history. That's the only way to get on with the future. They battle the weather, nature, and other pirates who are after the same thing they are.

I’m not the biggest fan of pirate romances, but when I do go for them, I generally need them to be the over the top swashbuckling type, not the sappy, humorous secondary character type. This just wasn’t the sort of book for me.

I found Vincent, Nate’s second mate, to be a very distracting character. A dwarf pirate who was trying to prove his manhood was one thing, but he was so gabby and “get in touch with your emotions” that it got annoying and clashed with being a pirate.

I felt like a lot of Nate and Claire’s Big Misunderstandings could have been more easily resolved. It was utterly obvious that they were not on the same page about why they were mad at each other, and I felt like one of them would have said something revealing while they were busy sniping at each other. However, the dialog was carefully crafted to keep them both in the dark until the Big Reveal could later be used as a plot point.

I enjoyed the action scenes though. They were well written and propelled the plot forward while it lagged romantically. The fight scenes were some of the best I’ve read in a romance novel. I kind of wish they had been attacked more.

I love pirate tales. I love the idea of living on the seas, navigating by the position of the stars and the sun, the adventure of new ports of all, the romance of getting an eyeful of all those muscle-y men....sigh.

Notice I said I love the "idea" of living on the seas. In reality, I suffer from vertigo and can't stand upright on a boat in the open waters without being attacked by waves, of dizziness. And of course there's the whole "romance/pirate novels bear no resemblance to real life on the seas" aspect. But that's why I read them -- to escape reality and live these adventures through the characters' eyes. Still, it's been a long time since I picked up a pirate romance, and it was with much anticipation that I hunkered down with Michelle Beattie's "A Pirate's Possession" about a week ago.

As far as romances go, "A Pirate's Tale" hit all the marks for me: satisfying love story, likeable characters, decent plot...hot love scenes. Where this book really shines for me, though, is in Ms. Beattie's phrasing, the unique ways she combines words to convey her message. I found myself putting little sticky notes at my favorite spots so I could come back and re-read them, not just for enjoyment, but for inspiration!

Nice job. I can't wait to pick up her other stories.

I love reading pirate stories--maybe because family lore has it we're directly descended from one. And I like to think my great-great-great-great uncle was half the man Nate Carter is in Ms Beattie's novel, "A Pirate's Possession". The smoking hot hero is matched up with a complex and courageous heroine, as both are driven by the quest for lost love and even longer lost treasure. I didn't realize until well into the story that this was part of a linked series but the author gave me enough of the earlier history to avoid confusion. Now I just have to find the rest of the series so I don't get left in the wake of this high seas adventure.

I felt kind of flat about this one. It was a nice story but I didn't connect to the characters. I also have a problem with what I feel is a gratuitous death. It didn't evoke emotions of grief in me but anger at the author because it could have been done so much better. The character could have become gravely ill and then survived which would have made it a much better story.

I really wanted to like this book more. There is a shortage of good pirate romances, and I thoroughly enjoyed the other 2 books in the series. Nate steals the show in Romancing the Pirate, but something is lacking in this one. The middle of the story is great; I just wish the beginning and end were too.

It's been a long time since I last read an historical romance. This one was a disappointment. The writing lets down the hot cover. :(
It had it's good points though and I gave it three stars, which to me means it wasn't a complete waste of my time. :)

Pride and Pirates! Saucy heroines! Treasure! Twisty ending that I didn't see coming. A fun read. Romance is outside of my usual reading material, and this book was good for my blood pressure--relaxing, engaging, and a even little sexy. If you like Romance in any form, you will love this one.
