I rated this book while comparing it to other travel books in general. If I had compared it only to books about hitchhiking or Canadian travel books, I would have added another star.
Matt's writing style is casual and easily readable. These two characteristics are a perfect match for his travel style.
Oddly, the copy of his book I received had seen its share of the road as well. It was given to me by a guy who had likewise hitchhiked through Canada. He'd never heard of the book, but a girl he met along the way said he absolutely had to have it, so gave him her autographed copy.
It's a heavy book and, rather than carry it further, the guy left it for me to read. I have, and will now continue its journey by giving it to a friend who lives a couple of hundred miles away. This book is mimicking its author. (But it is moving in the US instead of Canada now...)
I enjoyed reading the book but it did not inspire me to hit the road. I've hitched a little, so when I read of Matt's hours (and sometimes literal DAYS) of waiting for a ride in blistering sun or driving rain...let's just say that the romance of the road wilted.
The book was also good for letting me know about Canada. I learned a lot about it and that was a definite plus.
This was a charming book. The sort to pick up and not necessarily read from the beginning. A way to explore Canada and Canadians. There were some rogues, a politician, and a whole bunch of fun. He includes photos, selected readings, and even an epilogue. Want to learn or see a different aspect of Canada, this is the book. A good book for the bathroom or .... as you can pick it up at almost any point. Kind of like his 'Odyssey'.
An excellent trip. Average travel-writing, kind of boring overall, but worth a read and probably about as exciting as most could do/write. I learned that Trudeau told young Canadians to learn about Canada by hitching!
