Presents myths and facts about social problems confronting American adolescents, offering a perspective on crime, violence, drugs, teen pregnancy, suicide, and more
A thorough, statistical examination of adolescent behavior in various areas, which effectively undermines many assumptions adults have about teenage behavior. The overall argument is somewhat unclear, and the statistics are of course 15-20 years out of date, though an attentive reader could probably figure out how to update them.
Although dated, this book contains a lot of extremely important information and messages. A must read for those who are interested in one of the underlying (but not so well-recognized) phenomena.
I read this because I needed a non-fiction book to help me to answer a question- mainly why teens harmed. I didn't really find the answer, didn't expect to, but he opened my eyes about how there were other factors besides age involved. I liked where he was going with this book, that adults and teens basically do the same things, but teens are more likely to be focussed on/ blamed. It was just a bit too full of statistics to my liking. It's also a bit outdated. Other than that though, if he had a new edition more for today, then I'd definitely give that a read. That's why this book gets three stars instead of four from me.
