This book was a delight to read and added a lot to my study of American history from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. I found myself glued to stories I’ve heard again and again. The author would often switch to present tense when describing a scene, which was confusing at first but really enhanced the book once I got used to it.
A lot of time was spent looking at those who were pioneers and settlers during the Revolutionary War, which was s perspective I hadn’t learned much about before. I also appreciated that time was spent to look at the way of life in different places during different periods of America’s history.
The weaknesses of the book include how pro-America it was and how anti-Indian it seemed at times. The pro-America aspect did make it a lot of fun to read. It painted inspirational pictures of heroes. But it was definitely biased.
Overall I would recommend this book, especially for getting kids around 4th or 5th grade and higher interested in American history (though I would also recommend following up with conversations about what they are reading and how they are processing it).
We need more history books nowadays that bring the past to life like this one does!
