Tenney takes readers to Esther's pre-Islamic Persia to uncover the secrets that helped her win the heart and gain the ear of the king and save her people from destruction. A Jewish girl of no royal heritage was chosen to become the Queen of Persia. Was it her beauty alone, or did she know an important and mysterious truth? Tenney challenges his readers to move beyond formal petitions or even "storming the gates of heaven" to that intimate embrace of worship where the bride?s petitions move the King?s heart and where kingdoms, people, and situations begin to shift like pawns on a divine chessboard.

This is what I would call the nonfiction, companion book to his book Hadassah: One Night with the King. That book is the first book I can point to where I can truthfully say “This book changed my life”. The points he makes here are beautiful and scriptural and it was a good refresh, but it’s amazing how wrapped in fiction and narrative all of these points came through much clearer in Hadassah.
The story of Esther is one that can offer insight into a number of different personal circumstances [personal opinion!] I was surprised by Tenney's ability to draw such specific application to one's personal relationship to the Lord through his chapters surrounding the 'protocols of the Palace'. For example: "never underestimate the potential of one encounter" or " favor is what happens when preparation meets opportunity". I really enjoyed this book more than expected-maybe due to the season of life I am in but nevertheless I would recommend it!
An amazing book and a great reminder of the importance of focusing on seeking the Kingdom first. Esther focused on developing her relationship with the king before asking for favors. Preparation is important if we are to Worship God in spirit and truth and have an encounter with our maker. It took Esther one year preparing for one night and her encounter with the king changed her destiny and that of her people. An encounter with King Jesus changes the countenance and ones life can never be the same.
Finding Favor with the King is an enjoyable walk through the book of Esther. It’s a little repetitive and in some ways the repetition makes it feel like the author didn’t really have enough to write a book on. In truth I think the book would make a great sermon but as a book, it’s enjoyable but maybe not life changing.
The author hits on many of the great points and insights that can be gleaned from the book of Esther, but he doesn’t necessarily bring anything new to the table. I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. As long as the principles are right there are many different voices and many different communication styles that could be beneficial to people. So while the content isn’t new to me, I could take the book and give it to a new convert and be reasonably sure they would get a lot out of the book.
At the end of it all, it’s difficult to find any real fault with the book. There wasn’t anything fantastic about it, but it wasn’t without value either. As with many books like this one, I feel like the writing is lacking a little. It’s a little emotive. Not too much but it’s a little noticeable.
There were a few statements that made me crinkle my nose. One memorable one was that God will “give us extra innings to run up the score on our enemies.”That specific statement just rubbed me wrong. I believe God gives us complete victory and will do whatever it takes for us to have complete victory, but complete victory isn’t the same thing as “running up the score” and humiliating people.
Overall. It was enjoyable but it wasn’t special. Good but not original. I would definitely recommend it to the right person, but I don’t know that I would offer it to a seasoned saint. Well. Unless I offered it as a condensed version that was turned into a sermon. Even then it probably wouldn’t be anything new to a seasoned saint, but it may speak to their current circumstances.
Tommy Tenney's book Finding Favor with the King is the story of Esther. Tenney writes to draw connections from how we should prepare for and engage with God using Esther's own life choices as a model.
This book was divided into two fascinating parts. The details included in all the history and ritual surrounding Esther and the culture of the time is very informative. The other part is a Tenney's attempt to show examples through scripture of how as Christians we need to be preparing and pursuing relationship with God.
As a whole book, I found this to be a very frustrating to read. Tenney's ties of Esther to how we as current day Christians did not hold water. From the very beginning, Tenney writes of the book of Esther as a love story. He apparently holds her in high regard, praising Esther for her choices and wisdom, but his praise is all opinion. Tenney says "I'm convinced that Esther's commitment to love set up a transformation in the king's heart." Leap being made here is that Esther loved the King before becoming his wife. Another, more honest view of this, is that Esther knew the King had murdered or removed his wife and had likely disregarded many women before her, so as a survival skill Esther tried to show the King she respected him. Another stretch is when Tenney says that Esther had to prepare for her night with the king for a year because she wasn't good enough just how she was, and then ties this to how we as Christians need to prepare for our encounters with God. Frankly, this is just bad theology.
When not trying to make connections between Esther and our own relationships with Go this book actually makes some great points about how Christians need to be aware of their true intentions in choices they make when pursuing a relationship with God.
offered different perspective on the story of Esther regarding our relationship with God. It used her as an example towards becoming closer to God. It emphasized seeking God first and not His blessings, like when king Xersus asked her what she want he'll give her half the kingdom, why have half the kingdom when you can have the king instead, by choosing to have dinner with him. During preparation she was more interested in what the king liked instead of her personal gain, by taking advice from his chamberlain.
Again another book about recieving God's blessings. Takes the story of Esther and puts it in todays situation, and how she changed the fate of a nation. How one night with our King, can change your life. I've read Tommy Tenney before, i.e. God Chaser's. He is really good, and has a great grasp on the supernatural depth of the Lord, and the Holy Spirit. Don't miss it. Worth reading multiple times.
I read this book after reading Tenney's novel "Hadassah" and watching the movie. It's part of my studies on the book of Esther.
This book is about worship! It's all about the King. The protocol of the palace has changed the way I approach worship and prayer and the revelations on learning to worship with your enemy was very powerful. The parallels between Esther's relationship with the King and our relationship with God were very insightful.
This was a really inspiring read on the importance of intimacy with God and how to go about creating that intimacy with God. It was a refreshing look at Esther's story. I appreciated how it is written and left me feeling like I could grow my intimacy with God.
This one took me really too long to read. It should be a good quick read. I do have some problems with it, but over all, it was a good book. The author takes the story of Esther and uses it as a template for how we should interact with God.
Book Club Read. This book had some good insights from the story of Esther to our own personal walk with the Lord. It seemed scattered in places; I appreciated the cross reference and parallels to other scriptures in the Bible.
Some books aren’t worth buying or reading. Some books are worth reading once. Some books are worth storing for a possible re-read. And others are worth re-reading and even studying. This book is the latter.
This book also is not a breeze-through-it type of book but a stop-and-ponder or even a stop-and-pray type of book.
It’s main message is the book of Esther and could have been titled or subtitled something like, Esther Unveiled or Esther Revealed.
The author starts out by telling the readers why the story is relevant and important for today.
For each point not only does he use the story of Esther but uses historical information and personal stories and weaves expertly back and forth between these tying each point back to Esther and at times to what Jesus did for us.
I found this book to be the opposite of boring. Instead it was truly fascinating, just a bit less than riveting. And even though at times he repeats things for emphasis it is not boring because he does it in such a way as to uncover a new facet or a new insight of the truth.
Mr. Tenney also writes in such a way as to incite desire—you will want to become a true worshipper in the King’s Presence after reading this book.
A few choice tidbit quotes from the book:
With relationship comes access, and with intimacy comes influence. (p. 76)
Pure motives and passionate pursuit of the King’s face is what will also bring you to that place of favor. (p. 124)
…preparation trumps permission in the presence of the king. (p.146)
Nothing attracts God’s presence and His intervening power like focused and single-minded worship. (p.164)
If you are hungry for more of God, are in need of his favor, are in need of his power or simply want to be more hungry for God, this book is for you.

I will let you all know right now that if there's anything or everything that has to do with the story of Esther I am so in!
I really loved and enjoyed reading this book. It touched my soul so much. Finding favor with the King was such an inspiring and uplifting read I won't soon forget.
For those of you who didn't know, this is the author whose books along with the book of Esther inspired the well cherished film,"One Night with the King". If you haven't watched that movie you should because it's very good!
It was inspiring how the author would really parallel us as the Bride of Christ with Esther's story. The author also really gave some insight into the purification process of what Esther had to go through in order to be prepared to stand before the great king Xerxes. It was amazing how herbs such as garlic and myrrh were used in order to purify the body from the inside out. It was powerful because not only did this book help point out the natural side but it also gave some very helpful insight into the spiritual side. It was powerful!
There were so many wonderfully awesome insights like the one below,
"You can never become who you are supposed to be without a victory, and there is no victory without a battle."
Just like Esther we have to overcome a lot and take courage because we are not like everybody else. We are special and chosen of the one true King.
This book was such an inspiring read on the life of Esther. I was very encouraged and uplifted. I highly recommend reading this book! It was such a blessing.

My first encounter with Tommy Tenney was a few years ago when he came to a conference in my city. I always wanted to read one of his books but never had the opportunity until now. Back then we was well known for his novel, Hadassah: One Night with the King.
Content
Tenney takes the story of Esther to demonstrate the way each christian can go from being a common citizen to be the queen of a great empire, or in practical terms the approach one must take to grow in intimacy with God.
Following Esther’s transformation and growing relationship with the king, Tenney shares a list of protocols of the palace to be practiced in order to be prepared to receive favor from the King.
The book if full of parallelisms or comparisons between Esther’s challenges and struggles and our lives as christians or even with the church in general. Sometimes there are really good principles that come from this parallelisms, but sometimes they feel forced as if the author is trying too hard to make them fit with his conclusions.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for an inspirational reading which can be helpful in your daily relationship with God, Finding Favor With the King is the right book for you. It can be repetitive at times, which may be the result of bad editing or maybe just the author’s style but the teaching is one that will shape the way you see yourself before God.
I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
“Have you ever had a “that night” or a “that day”? A point in time before which things were going wrong, but after which things began to go right? What are the ingredients for “that night”? What is mixed into the recipe? Understanding what goes into creating that moment of divine favor was Esther’s ultimate secret. She learned how to find favor with the king.”
Finding Favor with the King takes the reader into the life of Esther. Specifically into the one year prior to Esther’s fateful night with the king; the night that would save a nation.
This is another excellent book by Tommy Tenney that can mostly be summed up in the twelve protocols of the palace – Esther’s secrets of finding favor with the king which comes down is about seeking the king more than the palace. A lesson that we should take to heart in our own life, a lesson that, if taken deep into the believer’s heart, could change the course of our life and our relationship with our King today.

This book is life-changing. It changed the way I looked at myself and elevated me from being a "poor peasant girl" to being the "King's" Queen. I was never the same in that I have learned to grasp God's wonderful plan for my life and the preparations I have to undertake to qualify for that calling. Not that this book is gender-oriented, but anyone who's longing for intimacy with her or his God can relate to this book. Here, T.Tenney was able to present God as "King" in the flesh. The book centered on the Jewish-orphan girl named "Hadassah" that was later came to be known as "Queen Esther" to whom one book in the bible was named after. T.Tenney enumerates the protocol of the royalty during biblical times and vividly connects it to our journey at the present time how we should present ourselves before the "King of Kings" that is none other than Jesus Christ.
I found this to be a great exposition on the Book of Esther! I gained a much greater appreciation for that book of the Old Testament. A definite worthwhile read to learn a bit more about one of the strong women of the Bible.
Finding Favor with the King is helping us prepare for out moment with our King. We are preparing ourselves for the utlimate King. We prepare ourselves for so much, but preparing for Him is something we do. We need to continual in preparation. Continue reading His work. Continually listen to his Holy Spirit in the way he directs us. Yet it is so amazing.
My favourite part of the book was about the Myrrh where it was mentioned that it was from birth to death in Jesus' life. An oil that was used for many purposes from a perfume to an execution.
I received this book from Bethany house for my honest review. Yes I loved it.
Have you ever pin-pointed a 'time' before which things were going wrong, but after which things began to go right....?? This is a book that goes into understanding the 'recipe' of what goes into creating THE Moment of Diving Favor!
It talks about how Favor is when 'Preparation Meeting Opportunity' and Success is what happens when 'Preparation Meets Potential'.
An ABSOLUTE Must Read!!!
Written by Tommy Tenny who also wrote The God Chasers Series, The God Catchers', God's Favorite House.
Using the book of Esther as the foundation, a discussion on how it is from the place of intimacy that we make our concerns known to the Lord and receive His response. Found this one a bit slower than the other books of his that I've read. In places it seemed as if he was going back over the same section that had been discussed in a previous chapter. But overall, it was good with plenty to think about and chew on and apply to my Christian walk.
The book of Esther is an incredible biblical encounter with not only her king but with the King of Kings! Tenney was difficult to stay with because he repeated himself so frequently it made the book painful to finish. He seemed very much passionate about the book of Esther but recapped in every chapter, repeated phrases often, & repeated same passages on the same page. Though it was challenging to finish it had some good insights into Queen Esther life & bravery.
There were some great nuggets with awe-inspiring lines like "flavor of favor", "whenever God gets ready to elevate you, He must first introduce an enemy."
"What you don't ERADICATE when you are strong will come back to attack you when you are weak."
I really enjoyed the passages on favor. Although I felt some things were reiterated and only paraphrased, still was a decent read.
Loved this book! Mr. Tenney retains an unfaltering command of rhythm and an uncanny sensitivity to orchestrate the balances between drawing you into the place that even angles fear to tread and boldly entering the throne room of Grace. "Worship is the protocol that protects the KING and qualifies the visitor."
