Now that they’ve made it to the Nationals, Shohoku learns exactly where they rank in the overall standings compared to some of the other teams, and they don’t like it! Shocked to learn that they’re only a C-ranked team, they’ve got to get their game on to beat their A-ranked first round opponent, Toyotama. Even if they beat Toyotama, Shohoku’s opponent in the second round is last year’s champion, Sanno Kogyo. For Sakuragi, Akagi, Rukawa and the boys of Shohoku High, the real game begins now!
The basketball championship round has finally begun, and Inoue makes it clear that Shohoku is off to a difficult start right away, at the sacrifice of some spoiler elements.
There are some funny interactions between Toyotama and Shohoku, which turns out to be Shohoku's first opponent. Another team is being introduced here, Sannoh, which was the last year's champions. They in turn, will be Shohoku's second opponent should they win against Toyotama.
Shohoku get off to a tough start. They are clearly demarcated as lower ranked. All of them are nervous and their usual style of play isn't working. Sakuragi gets subbed out. Rukawa starts to fire up but in what shocked my balls off, he gets intentionally elbowed in the eye by the opponent team. What a bunch of fucking rogue assholes. This volume was very funny often times, especially when Sakuragi shoots the ball. I love the interaction between Sakuragi and Kainan, especially when in a former volume he called Maki "UNCLE" LMAO LIKE WTFFF. hahahaha. Also I'm glad to see its not as racist as I first thought. That long haired guy on Kainan gets called stupid monkey too. I love the brash and abrasive nature of Sakuragi man. Also loved his character development here when he finally understands why Rukawa is so great cause he went through the motions himself too. Love that you have to practise 3x to catchup. I gotta do that myself I swear. He seems more interested in basketball now than Haruko and the change has been so subtle and drawn out that I feel like he's a real character when clearly no one as confident but also as talented like him could exist. Love this series.
After watching the anime Kuroko's Basketball, I was eager and excited to find another basketball anime...
And so, I've found Slam Dunk, a much more exciting, comical and the diamond of basketball based anime/manga. For anyone who doesn't know, the last episode that is part of the manga is episode 96 out of 101. The rest of the episodes are just so they could conclude the anime. If your going to read the manga, start at chapter 198 which is where the anime leaves off at. That's what I did, and I certainly don't regret continuing onto the manga. This shonen has become my top favorite easily.
Slam Dunk, Vol. 23 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (198–206) of the on-going manga series.
Kaede Rukawa has made his intentions of wanting to go play basketball in the United States and approaches Coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai, but is shot down. His wife tells Rukawa that once one of Anzai's players went to America, but fell under a big depression until dying due to various conflicts with his teammates and rivals.
On the train to Nationals, members of the Shohoku team gets into an argument with players from the Toyotama High School, who reveals that Shohoku is a C-ranked team in the tournament while Toyotama is A-ranked, which makes them a better recognized team. As they arrive at Hiroshima, Shohoku receives support from Hikoichi Aida, from Ryonan High School, who tells them about the players from Toyotama whom they will face in the first round.
The game between Toyotama and Shohoku starts, and Ryota Miyagi has problems with Toyotama's attacks as most of the players tend to bother him. Hanamichi Sakuragi continues making his typical mistakes to the point that he is subbed by the first year Yasuharu Yasuda as Coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai wants to slow down the pace of the game.
Takenori Akagi and Kaede Rukawa manage to tie the game, but the Toyotama captain Tsuyoshi Minami elbows Rukawa's left eye on purpose. Rukawa is then subbed by Sakuragi and the game continues. Toyotama keeps committing fouls, but they manage to gain and hold the lead till the end of the first half. While preparing for the second half, Rukawa decides to continue playing despite his injury.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. The rivalry between Shohoku High School and Toyotama High School was quickly established en route to Hiroshima, where the Nationals are being played. Early on, we clearly see the difference between an A-ranked team and a C-Class ranked team, as Shohoku was struggling against Toyotama at the beginning. The tankōbon closes with Toyotama High in the lead after the first half and an injured Kaede Rukawa, who is still determined to play.
All in all, Slam Dunk, Vol. 23 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
*This review is for the series as a whole with 4.5 out of 5 stars*
I’ve posted 2 articles about Slam Dunk early this year so I’m sure you guys already have an idea how I adore this series. The anime series was incredible but its manga counterpart is beyond incredible, it was AHA-mazing!
I’m not a sporty kind of girl and I don’t think I’ll be anytime soon, but I think what’s great about reading books and watching shows is that you learn and (kind of) experience a lot of things you don’t normally do in real life. And because of Slam Dunk, I learn to appreciate sports stories and eventually love them.
When I started reading this manga, it felt so nostalgic. It’s not so different in the anime so while reading it, I keep on picturing out all those episodes which I think made my reading experience even more enjoyable.
Slam Dunk showcases a great team work. What I learn to appreciate about sports stories/shows is that it’ll give you a lot of lessons about what it means to be a great sportsman. And Slam Dunk absolutely slammed dunk that part!
I usually watch the anime series first before reading its manga counterpart and as for Slam Dunk, I’ve watched it quite a number of times already and I don’t think I’ll ever stop watching it, *wink. Even after watching the anime, I can still feel the tension, the suspense, and the excitement while reading this manga.
As you can read on its title, this manga centered around the sports basketball and through it weaved a really good story everyone of us will enjoy and appreciate whether you’re into sports or not. Another thing I love about reading manga is that it will never ceased to make you laugh with its funny scenes and Slam Dunk had it big time! I lost count how many times I laughed my heart out reading this masterpiece.
The drawings were really so good too plus those facial expressions were epic, especially Sakuragi’s, haha.
This story has a main character but I love that it didn’t just center around him but the author also gave its other characters a chance to share their own story. I love the character development as well especially Sakuragi’s.
And speaking of Sakuragi, I didn’t eventually like him at first. He’s definitely trouble and I didn’t quite appreciate his annoying antics and his excessive bragging. But all throughout the story, you can’t definitely help it but like his character. As I’ve said above, Sakuragi’s character development is definitely one you should see. From being this good for nothing delinquent, he became a true sportsman. I just absolutely love his improvement not just in basketball but eventually as a person. It’s definitely hard for me to explain but I just LOVE Sakuragi. Ofcourse he can still be an airhead sometimes but I can see now that it’s one of the things that makes him quite likeable, haha.
Slam Dunk has some pretty amazing group of characters and as I’ve said in this article, they come in varieties so I’m sure a lot of readers can find some characters they can relate and love.
The anime series left off the national championship and let me tell you guys, it was already good as it is. It was full of intense scenes with a right blend of humor but the national championship parts were sooooooo good I can still feel its intensity even after finishing this manga. Actually, I cried pretty hard when they won! You should definitely read it!!!
Although the ending felt short which ofcourse makes you want to ask for more, I guess it was still a pretty good and hopeful ending, not just for team Shohoku but for the other teams as well. Besides, after that intense match with Sannoh, I don’t think Slam Dunk failed me.
So if you’re looking for an intense sports shonen manga to read, Slam Dunk should be on top of your list.
At the time of this review, I have finished the series, except for volumes 22 and 24, which I am not sure if I will go back and read.
Tough Bracket Shohoku finds out their bracket and it is a tough one. They are facing last years champions.
Kainan and Shohoku While these teams friendly(ish?) rivalry seem to begin with this years particular teams, I compare it to Karasuno and Nekoma. The reason I compare it to them is the dialogue on pages 32-33. They are saying they will face each other, which is what Karasuno and Nekoma wanted to do in the Spring Tournament in Haikyu!!.
Coach Anzai and Coach Riku While Coach Anzai has years of experience as a coach and Coach Riku is only an 11th grader (16-17 years old), they are actually making similar tactics. Coach Anzai did a on page 107, which Coach Riku did in Kuroko's Basketball. Both coaches knew this tactic will help their guys. This is a bit different from the student coach in Slam Dunk, I believe. I think this is testament to Coach Riku's background. You too would have insights in coaching if you spent most of your life in a gym and with a relative that played the sport, too.
Killer Nicknames It is never good when a player has a lethal nickname. This player is like the stealing player in Kuroko's Basketball. Boo!
Verdict: I am kind of curious HOW they got through volume 24 based on the end of volume 23.
The first round of Nationals being and Shohoku's inexperience is showing! They fought tooth and nail to get here and now they're matched with the best of the best. Of course, Shohoku has some tricks up their sleeve too, but it's not going to be easy. Especially against Toyotama, a very physical team who Shohoku is starting to throw fists with before the game even starts! Inoue makes the talent gap clear between the two teams but is sure to weave some space for the possibility that Shohoku can actually pull out a win. Will they? Who knows! But there's a lot of great comedy seeing other teams (like Kainan) watching Shohoku and commentating on how well (or poorly, as the start of the game shows) they're playing.
This book was about Shohoku (the main team in the story) vs another team that is really strong. Although Shokoku doesn't give up on a strong team and they show a lot of collaboration with each other and tries to beat the other team that is struggling. But, after a while, the other team starts to make the game intense because the other team isn't weak at all so they try their best until the end- But the result continues till vol 24. I recommend you to read this because it will make the story intense and it's also very funny.
Shohoku, who broke through the Miuradai match, will enter a match with Shoyo High School in B block.
The match was tough, but Shohoku managed to keep up with Shoyo.
Just before the end of Shohoku's two-point lead due to Rukawa's play, Sakuragi forcibly decides a dunk from the top of the center called Hanagata. This dunk was a foul and did not get count as a goal, and Sakuragi was sent off, but he received the most cheers of the day.
Even after Mitsui who were exhausted, and Sakuragi leaving the court, Shohoku members kept the lead from Shoyo by 2 points, and Shohoku won.
The Nationals finally begane!!! rough start for Shohoku though.
So many hostile people, it dones't look like it's basketball hahaha. At this point, every team is strong and you can't underestimate anybody but Shohoku is pair with a team that is REALLY strong and if they win, they'll have to face the champions. GO SHOHOKU GO!!
It seems that Toyotama is a very interesting team, they have a lot of skills and they are also very physical, can't wait to see how this match develops
C-ranked? How could Shohoku be C-ranked? And did they really get such a bad draw in the brackets? Face off against Toyotama, ranked A, will Akagi and Shohoku and Anzai's dream come to an end before it even begins? And how about round 2? Sanno Kogyo, the national champions two years running. How can Shohoku overcome odds like that? If they don't, their season is over. This is the nationals, with no space for losing. The real game begins now.
One of the more iconic of sports manga. It's the first series where I actually both read the manga and watched the anime. It has flawed protagonists, growing up pains, colourful characters, and beautiful meaningful relationships, all neatly wrapped around the context of college basketball.
Continuing on manga, finished rewatching the anime after more than ten years!😭 The anime brings back a lot of my childhood memories. Oh my... I love this!❤️ I'll never regret rewatching this. Will definitely watch again in the futuuuuuure😍
My biggest concern that I have for the remainder of this great series is whether or not the basketball games will remain interesting. So far, that is indeed the case. I see the inklings of a Rukawa-Sakuragi friendlier rivalry.
⭐️⭐️✨ I was enjoying this volume until Rukawa got injured. I feel like when a character purposefully injures another in a sports manga it generally sucks the fun out of the story, so, after that happened, the rest of the volume was a bit of a bummer.

yohei in the 1st chapter ugh, i am beyond happy about yasuda being noticed instead of getting smack all the time. toyotama are such losers if they need to literally get a guy to pass out for them to lead
