“Everything’s unravelling. Soon he’ll come for us… and he won’t stop.”
The Lorelei has gone and Barnabas and Quentin are missing, presumed dead. As Willie attempts to protect Maggie from the sheriff’s investigations, Angelique begins to uncover the truth about Barnabas and Quentin’s fate. But a powerful force is waiting in the wings, and its arrival in Collinsport will soon change the lives of everyone forever…
Big Finish Productions beautifully resurrects the gothic atmosphere of the classic 1960s/70s daytime soap opera with Kingdom of the Dead (Part 1). Picking up the narrative pieces after the original 1971 television storyline, this full-cast audio drama wastes no time diving into the supernatural dread surrounding Collinsport. The lorelei has vanished, and icons Barnabas and Quentin Collins are missing and presumed dead. Writer Stuart Manning masterfully establishes an eerie, slow-burn mystery as Willie Loomis desperately tries to shield Maggie Evans from the local sheriff's intense investigation, while the witch Angelique begins unearthing the terrifying truth of what actually happened to the Collins men. The audio design captures that classic, moody, shadows-and-fog ambiance, treating fans to an immersive experience that feels like stepping right back into Collinwood. Earning a strong 4-star rating, the premiere episode succeeds largely because it brings back the legendary original cast, including David Selby, Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott, and John Karlen. Hearing these definitive voices inhabit their characters decades later is pure nostalgic gold, and their performances carry the perfect blend of high-stakes melodrama and genuine, eerie gravity. The addition of the incomparable David Warner as the mysterious "Seraph" adds an incredible layer of fresh, cinematic weight to the production. The only minor drawback keeping it from a perfect score is that as the first hour of a four-part miniseries, Part 1 is tasked with a massive amount of narrative setup and exposition. It leaves a lot of plot threads hanging in mid-air, operating purely as a atmospheric foundation for the chaos to come. Nevertheless, for any Dark Shadows fan, it is a thrillingly written, beautifully performed return to a beloved world of horror and tragedy.
Big Finish GETS Dark Shadows. They understand that it goes on, never ending. And they're opened up new vistas for the characters. At the end of The Rage Beneath, Barnabas and Quentin are left aboard the burning ghost ship, the Lorelei, and seemingly perish. Ah, but it's not that easy to get rid of a vampire and an immortal. The Keeper of the Kingdom of the Dead (voiced by David Warner) wants to live among mortal men again, and he sees an opportunity by striking a bargain with Quentin. There is a lot going on here, with Willie hiding Maggie in Windcliffe, and Maggie now remembering who and what Barnabas is. And the story continues...on to Part Two!
