Just found this little gem from 1963 at my local library book sale. It's a paragon of 1960s self-help pop psychology, and a super fun read if you're into that sort of thing. If you read for entertainment instead of self-improvement, you won't be disappointed. That said, you're definitely going to want to hypnotize yourself after reading this. Go ahead.
I came accross this book on my libraries online catalouge not realising how old it was. I think that it is possibly one of the first books for lay people on self-hypnosis. The book introduces self-hypnosis in a very watered down way-I would say it would be best described as an intentional meditation. The whole approach is outlined in chapter 2, and the rest of the chapters look at applying the technique for different contexts (eg, to regulate emotion, to lose weight, drink less, etc.) so you can just read the chapters related to your needs and skip the rest. I gave the book 1 star because these additional chapters hardly add anything , except for a few suggested sound bites and phrases to incorporate into your self-talk while "under hypnosis". This could easily be summarised in just a couple of pages. Each chapter is then just bulked out with positive testimonials and examples of when it worked for other people, which adds nothing to the book. I think I could have got all the information I needed from this book in an article. I expect that these days, there are probably 10 minute YouTube videos that would better cover the content of this book. All that being said, I am still going to give the technique a try.
