The expert archaeologists and historians behind a hit Channel 4 TV series have here selected sixty historical events that they believe had a major impact on society, providing both a quick and informative foray into the past, and a definitive guide to British history.
As a big fan of the Time Team television series I had to buy this book when I saw it in a charity shop a few years ago, although I admittedly only just got around to reading it!
In an easy to read format complete with photographs and illustrations the book covers the history of Britain from 650000BC up until the modern day - obviously due to this vast expanse of time covered, each part is only discussed in brief terms and the book comes to just over 300 pages long.
The brief descriptions may bother some, but without creating a book many thousnads of pages long it would have been impossible for the author to go into any great depths. I felt that the way this book was presented made it easily digestable and allows the reader to discover an particular aspects of our history that really appeal to them, and which can then be read up on to greater depths in books dedicated to that specific time period.
I would imagine this book may prove frustrating to anyone who has studied history to degree level, or indeed archaeologists as it is written in a format that will appeal to the every day reader rather than scholar, and there are bound to be some inaccuracies brought about in part by it's simplified nature.
I personally enjoyed this book as I do have a great interest in history (despite never studying it past year 9) - particularly that of England and coupled with its ties to Time Team, I was always going to be on a winner with this one.
My only other word of caution is not to buy this expecting to be entertained with humorous quipps from Tony Robinson - the only appearance he makes in the book is in several photos.
Published in 2006 this book still costs a minimum of £20 on amazon, and mine was still a fairly costly £9 at the charity shop.
Tim Taylor takes the reader on a journey looking at various periods of Britain's history, beginning with the Palaeolithic finishing with the Modern era via the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, Roman, Anglo Saxon, Viking, Norman, Middle Ages, Tudor, Stuart, Georgian and the Victorian eras. In each chapter, Taylor looks at the relevant age dealing with the age in detail, a page on chronology and world events, an Iconographic Artefact, a painting done by the Time Team artist, a couple of Signpost Events, a few Key Events and a page on the Technology of the age.
I as a fan of the Time Team found the book very interesting and was astonished at what I didn't know or had simply forgotten about since I left school. I often watch Time Team when it's on TV and will continue to do so.
