Rate this book
The Valefar boy tricked Ivy Taylor into kissing him, but he took much more than a kiss - he stole her soul and left her within inches of death. By surviving, Ivy is drawn into the conflict between the Martis and the Valefar. The war between these two immortal forces has raged for millennia without distraction. Until now.

Ivy is an anomaly-she is the only person who has ever walked away from a demon kiss alive. Her survival gives her unique and deadly abilities. Too powerful to ignore, Ivy is a threat to both armies. These two ancient enemies will stop at nothing to kill the seventeen-year-old.

Surviving is nothing new for headstrong Ivy, but her survival has never depended on another person before. This time it does. And if she misplaces her trust, she's dead. To her horror, she starts falling in love at the worst possible time-with the enemy. He appears to be protecting her. But she can't be certain if he is trying to help her, or help himself to her power. For Ivy, trusting the right person is the difference between love and survival, or a deadly demon kiss.

I read way too many young adult books. It comes from having a daughter at home that loves to read. I'm constantly getting handed books that I "gotta read!" Other times, I want to screen stuff and make sure it's age appropriate. Honestly, at times it drives me nuts - I don't have the same taste in books as your typical teen girl. But, Demon Kissed was a great read.

The book has great characters that are developed and fleshed out over the course of a tightly woven plot. I liked the strong heroine. I liked the romantic tension. I especially appreciated that it kept up a quick pace, but not at the expense of character depth. Well worth a read.

In the eternal battle between good and evil, both angels and demons have "recruited" humans for their respective armies to tip the odds in their favor. A thousands-of-years-old prophecy claims that somehow, one of those chosen humans, a girl to be precise, gets stuck in between; being both a Martis (good guys) and a Valefar (bad guys) and being too dangerous for the one side and extremely important to the other, both end up hunting her.

Sure, the idea is not entirely new but overall I thought it was really good. I was intrigued and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this until the story started to drag a little somewhere around the 60% mark. That was also when we got to know more about our male love interest (and the Valefar in general) and things started to go downhill for me. Here’s what we learned:

- The soul sucking monster aka the male love interest doesn’t really want to be a monster.

- It’s harder for new Valefar to control their bloodlust.

- The soul sucking monster has been 17 years old for over 800 years.

- Ivy’s blood, err, soul sings to him. He has never wanted a soul so badly before and there’s no other soul he wants as much as he wants hers. Sounds familiar?

- He’s in constant battle with his inner demon, seeing as he wants to suck out the soul of the girl he loves whenever he’s near her. Luckily, his self-restraint is endless. *eye roll*

- Due to above mentioned lusting after her soul, it’s impossible for our lovebirds to kiss and very dangerous to touch, seeing as just one wrong movement on her part could set him off and make him kill her.

- Souls obviously smell like food.

Now why did this bother me? I don’t know, maybe if Ward had fed me this information bit by bit and not all at one I wouldn’t have been bothered as much but since I learned all of this in one chapter I just kept thinking "Gawd, this is so old hat. I already know what’s coming next". I don’t know, maybe it's just me but don’t you also see the similarities? Or am I paranoid?

I’m also not sure what to think of the writing, it felt kinda choppy at times, though the typos could have been responsible for that as well. I’m usually not easily bothered by typos but in this case entire words were missing, which really got on my nerves after a while.

What I liked about this was the romance since it wasn’t the typical love at first sight kind of thing. Thank God! I also can’t say anything bad about the characters. Our protagonist wasn’t winy or insecure and neither was she overly tough. The male love interest was definitely swoon-worthy, though I have to say that the spark didn’t really catch. The secondary characters were also nice enough, especially the old lady Al. Speaking of old ladies...a thing I noticed with slight annoyance was the constant absence of adults.

Now while this wasn’t something that swept me off my feet, it was still something I thoroughly enjoyed. After the slightly annoying part, the pace picked up again and the events took a rather dramatic turn. I found myself quickly forgetting about what had bothered me so much and being sucked back into the story. The ending is not one of the worst cliffhangers ever but it certainly left a lot of things unresolved and I will definitely check out the sequel once it’s published.

I can't do it, I can't finish this book. It beats me.

40 more pages and I would've finished it, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It's not a horrible story, the characters weren't bad, but the writing style was filled with little gaps, for instance you are reading a confrontation between two chatacters who were in a room together, one of them said someting, and then the heroine is reflecting on it, you don't get to know how your heroine left the room, it's bam! suddenly shes walking out, no closure. Plus, I feel bad for saying this but honestly the chapter endings need to be a little more dramatic, it was like reading something and then oh, o,,,k! Chapter done!

But all that didnt cause my frustration to the point where I decided to stop reading it, what did it for me was that the similarities with Twilight were unreal! Down to the line! I could point them out till tomorrow but I don't want to waste my energy, I'm off to read another book!

P.S if you didn't read Twilight, this book might be enjoyable for you. But if you did, and like me, if you read Twilight more than twice and remember the lines and the smallest details, you'll have a headache from the eye-rolling you'll be doing during this book!

I just want to say that I read this book in 16 hours. I had to stop reading in order to sleep and function. However, I would have kept reading if I was able to. I have read a lot of books about angels and demons and this one was very different. I absolutely loved this book. It will definitely be one of the greats. The twists in the story kept me hooked from the first pages. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who is thinking about reading it. I very rarely review books but, this one deserved a review. Now I just have to wait for book 2 to come out which will be a very, very hard thing to do.

Okay well, that was extremely intense. I was sweating, that's how engrossed in the story I was. This story brings a whole new meaning to soul mate. I thoroughly enjoyed this story about the fight of good & evil-literally. It was jam packed with demons, prophecies, love and loss. Huge cliffhanger at the end! I seriously can't not wait to see what happens next. Exceptional Debut that will leave you gasping for more......

It was awesome. One of the best books I have read in a while. I love the Twilight and H.O.N. series', but I was starting to get a little burnt out on vampires. The Angels and Demons were a nice change of pace for me. I can't wait for the second one to be released. This book truly is a 'Good Read'.

Demon Kissed grabbed my attention from not just the very first page, but from the very first line. There was no reading a few chapters into it to see if it got interesting or not, like so many other books.

It has an amazing story line and characters, with each character playing a crucial part from beginning to end. All of the them are all vividly detailed, from their personalities to their moods to what kind of clothes they wear. Same goes for the different settings, each scene is perfectly described, leaving little for you to have to imagine. I highly recommend this to everyone, YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!

MILD SPOILER ALERT

Ivy Taylor is marked as a 'Martis' on her seventeenth birthday. The very same night she is Demon Kissed by her 'Valefar' boyfriend, Jake. The kiss removes a large part of her soul, but not all of it. Being the only one to ever survive a demon kiss, she becomes 'tainted'. She is not longer a true 'Martis', who wear the blue mark, nor is she turned into a 'Valefar', who wear the red mark. Ivy is caught between the two worlds, wearing a purple mark, along with having some very unique abilities. She soon finds out that these abilities are valuable to the 'Valefar' and a danger to the 'Martis'. The two sides, who have been at war with each other for years, will stop at nothing to catch her. Add to all that that she's falling in love with her natural enemy, who may or may not love her back. Ivy quickly learns that she must choose her friends carefully, not everyone is who they are pretending to be. ♥

WOW.. Just wow!! what to say really? words fail me. After reading this book, i keep replaying scene after scene from many of different pages within. This book is so raw, heart-wrenching, and would leave you utterly stunned. I love it. I love every single page inside. I adore the characters, and it has a twisted plot that sometimes makes me wanna hurl and read it fast, so i could find out what's next. But really, at the same time, I also want to read it slow and just savor every words, details, and devour within it. That's how much I love this book.

Ivy Taylor is being tricked by a boy, who she taught was her boyfriend. While the boy said he just wanted a kiss, well he doesn't only takes the kiss. He sucked her soul through her bone and Ivy is on the brim of death. But somehow, she manages to survive and alive. How? no one has ever survive a demon kiss before. yep, the said boy is a Valefar, a Demon Kissed. They have no soul, and while at the same time can't survive without it either. That's why they have to take souls from other being.
After that incident, Ivy's life has never been the same. She's being hunted by both Valefar and Martis, an immortal enemy of Valefar. Ivy has to survived and deal with her power, the power that marked her as one and the only kind that would change things in the world. Ivy has to make choices and decides which sides she is in. And that wasn't an easy thing to do while you're being hunted and tracked and every Martis and Valefar will stop at nothing to get you killed.

Well, from the very first page I already has a good feeling of this book. This book has everything you want.. the tension, twist, everything is perfectly packed. Ivy is a very nice character. She's strong, and has to deal with so many things at times. While on the other hand well, we have Collin. Oh God. Collin is tough, arrogant, but also very sweet and impossibly gorgeous. He's always there when needed. While appear to be confident and controlled, Collin has a dark past. It is so heart breaking and raw. It makes me want to be there and comfort him. Damn, the things that he done for Ivy, well let's just say, every girl want to have a guy who love them the way he loves Ivy.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who want to hear me babble non stop about Valefar, Martis and Collin. Can't wait for the next book.

Just one word is going to start off my review....

Stunning

Like seriously. Wow I have to tell you all, I loved this book. I really wasn't thinking too much into reading it, then I re-read the summary and I was like okay, I will read it. I now my mind is like "What the heck, how did that turn out to be so utterly amazing?!" I was seriously hooked from page one. And I am not lying one bit, maybe even the first paragraph had me by my teeth.

First off, the very idea for the book. A demon kiss. Like, how amazing does this sound....amazingly bad...oh shoot. Just amazing. I have never have came across a concept like this one, and it worked so perfectly. H.M. had me caught in an amazing story and I was glued to my nook all day.

I don't even think I could give you all a summary of this book, because it would be so full of spoilers and my intense emotion you all would be like..."Well, she just messed this up for all of us! Dang YOU!" But no, I will not do that to you all, because this books needs to be read and felt by you!

The characters were amazing, and plot was killer, and I felt like I could see every image H.M. Ward gave me right in front of me. Everything came alive and I was so hooked into this story, I could not believe what was going on from one page to the next. I never really knew who to fully trust in this book and I wanted to get to the bottom of every mystery Ivy had, because I desperately wanted everything to work out somehow for her.

The ending wanted to make me hurl my nook at the wall, I was just so torn with everything going on, and then it ended! I could not just leave it like that! Needless to say, I am anxiously awaiting book number two to come out in August. I almost feel like I can not wait that long. Because I HAVE to know how Ivy and Collin will come out of all of this.

Pick up this book. You will be drawn into this book and you will not want to put it down until it is done. It is simply amazing and I must know what happens next.

Happy Reading All.

I was sucked into this book as soon as I read the first few pages. The amount of detail about the setting and the characters is amazing as well as the length of imagination in this book. There's enough romance in the story to keep you satisfied...even if it is kind of challenging for it to happen. I don't really like books with sloppy kisses and "I love you"s on every page. I can't really think of any other word for it other than phenomenal. H.M. Ward deserves a freaking award to rival all awards ever given. Another thing I like was the ending line...that made me smile and laugh when I read it. I can't wait for the second book to come out and I just hope that it's as good as this book was. Something else I'd like to say is that if I was a producer, I'd probably do anything to make this into a movie and if they ever do...they will have a lot of weight on their shoulders because it'd be hard to make a movie as good as this book.

"Your passion will keep you alive Ivy Taylor, but it will also risk your soul. It dictates what you do, how you live, and with whom you lay your loyalties. Oh child. You have so much good in you, and so much darkness too.."

A kiss is no big deal...right?

Sure. If the guy you're kissing isn't a soul-thirsty demon intent on ending your life.

From the moment Ivy Taylor is demon-kissed her life will never be the same again.

Enter a tale of angel-picked individuals, soul seeking demons, dreadful prophecies, tirades of secrets and a love that defies all odds. Demon Kissed by H.M. Ward is another thrilling paranormal romance novel which is sure to have you craving more!

At first I thought that the story was too fast-paced. I've never read a book that put you right in the action without a prologue or a preface, but I soon came to realize that that was exactly why I loved it. There were so many twist and turns that I did not expect what would happen! It was a roller coaster ride that I definitely did not want to end. I loved all the characters and was rooting for Collin from the point I found out what he was. But his betrayal did hurt Ivy and me...but all was not what it seemed. He redeemed himself and all I can say is....I CANNOT WAIT TO START READING THE NEXT ONE!

I do not know by which stretch of the imagination can these series obtain an average of four stars. It is poorly developed, the characters lack depth, besides being very cliched. The story had potential I must admit but that alone was not sufficient to lift these books from the mundane, stereotypical shelf of YA paranormal fiction. The only reason I tried these series was a) the refreshing absence of vampires b) it had been written by H M Ward (author of Stone Prison: a charming fairy tale). Overall a disappointment.

DNF @ page 28

I don't think I'm the target audience for this at the moment... or ever again. If I had picked this up years ago, I would've gobbled it up as quickly as I did the House of Night novels. Speaking of HoN, this book resembles a striking resemblance with the concept of being given a mark at a certain age (coming of age). The mark is on the forehead in both instances and the only difference is angels and vampires. It's all the same coin. The writing is awkward and there were several times I couldn't make it throughout one page without cringing more than once. An example:
"Inseparable things- I learned- could be separated, but it hurt like hell."
This book tries and because it's the author is giving her best effort I won't star this as 1 star. This just isn't for me, but many people enjoy this novel, so give it a try yourself.

Finally a book that's worth spending time and money on ! If you look at my other previews I don't normally give 5 stars but this book deserved it! I love everything about it, lots of twist and turn, unpredictable, excellent characters and plot,a female lead that I can understand and feel for. There were some very minor editing OOOPs! but everything else was very good. Can wait for the next one! Do yourself a favor in READ THIS.

Review on Linny's Literature

This book was not what I expected. From the first page to the last it threw me in different directions, constantly bindsiding me and taking me on a rollercoaster of emotions along with the main character. Everything from the thrilling story, to the chracters that I loved, to the writing itself, came together to make Demon Kissed an amazing read.

When I started reading Demon Kissed, I was skeptical because the book did not waste any time - it immidiately dumped you into important, story-changing events one after the other without break and at first it was a little overwhelming. I think it was strange to me because this isn't how authors usually do it, usually dragging things out and building suspense for chapters. I quickly got used to it, though, and revelled in the quick paced, action packed story that keeps up right until the last page. Demon Kissed was thrilling and not once did I get bored while reading. I often found myself getting so caught up in the story that I would forget the world around me. My mom would call me for dinner and I would literally jump and think "HolycrapitsaValefar!". When a book can transport you out of your life and straight into it's story, you know that the author did something very right.

Not only was this book filled to the brim with edge-of-your-seat action, but the story of Demon Kissed was completely original. Part-demon Valefars that can rip out your soul with a kiss. Part-angel Martis fighting against the evil Valefar. Both forces immortal and gifted with unimaginable powers. And a prophecy that throws one girl into it all, commiting her to a life of torment that she didn't ask for. Book after book about the same vampires and werewolves is growing dull, but Demon Kissed is not like anything that I have ever seen before.

I felt everything that the main character, Ivy, felt from the sting of a betrayal to the excitment of friendship. Usually I can guess the plot twists far in advance when I read a book, but I was just as completely shocked as Ivy when unexpected things came at her out of nowhere. I think that was probably one of my favorite things about Demon Kissed: feeling like I was in Ivy's shoes through the whole story. Ivy's character was realistic- not inhumanly emotionless or robotic and not overly sensitive and annoying. Both of these traits are an all too common problem in the YA book world. But Ivy reacted to the things that happened to her in a very human and understandable way, making her relatable and likeable. It also helped that, unlike some lead females, Ivy wasn't weak and pitiful. She was powerful and knew how to stand up for herself. So many bad and unfair things happen to Ivy, and she wonders why this all had to happen to her, but she never stops fighting. Ivy is definitely one of my new all-time favorite heroines, but she wasn't the only character in this book that I loved.

Each and every character brought something to the story that enhanced it, not one of them flat and meaningless in their existence. Collin, the "enemy" that Ivy is falling for, is powerful, thoughtful, and the hot bad-boy to his core. Is he trying to protect Ivy, or is he plotting against her? His alligence keeps you guessing right up until the last pages of the book. And then there's Ivy's Martis friend Eric. Eric is sweet and is always there for Ivy, but what will happen when he learns that she is the girl in the prophecy? Al, the elderly Martis nun that wants nothing but to help Ivy, is wise and always has something funny to say. All of the characters and even the ones that you at first think are meaningless all play important roles in making Demon Kissed the epic story that it was.

Demon Kissed was original and exciting and I loved it, down to every plot twist. It was refreshing to never know what was going to happen or what the characters were going to do, all while feeling like I was living Ivy's life through the words on the page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a taste for awesome.

I found Demon Kissed on my kindle when I was searching for new books to read and I am so glad that I did! This was a completely unique story that captivates you from the very first chapter. The descriptions in this book alone will have you reading non-stop and the characters are amazing as well!

The book starts out with Ivy being on a date with her boyfriend Jake, but Jake isn't want he seems. He is Valefar, a demon who steals the souls of the living. When he kisses Ivy to take her soul and kill her something goes terribly wrong. Ivy doesn't die like she is supposed to, she survived being demon-kissed. Something no one has ever heard of before. This puts Ivy on the path to becoming what fate had already planned out for her.

Ive is placed in the hand of the Martis, a group of beings who have been blessed by the angels to fight against the Valefar. There has been a war raging for thousands of years between these two groups and Ivy has been thrown in the middle of it. Since she has been demon-kissed Ivy has had some strange things happen to her. She has powers no one has ever heard of and her marking above her eye has turned a violet color making her the Prophecy One.

The Valefar and Martis believe that Ivy holds the key to unleashing the most feared demon from the pits of hell and neither group will stop at nothing to get their hands on her. Ivy has held her identity a secret from them both but it grows harder to do as each day passes. Will she be able to keep it a secret or will they find out a capture Ivy? I guess you'll just have to read and find out! ;)

Ivy is an amazing character. She is strong and passionate about what she believes in. She allows others to help her when she needs it and even though her life has been completely turned around she is still fighting for what she believes is right. The rest of the characters were very well developed as well and it allowed me to feel like I could know them in the real world. I think my other favorite character besides Ivy had to be Collin. He was definitely sigh worthy with all the good looks and confidence one could only hope for in a man. He protected Ivy every chance he got and was willing to do whatever it took.

There are some twists and turns that this book throws at you which will have you continuously flipping the pages to find out what will happen next. It is an original story that is very unique from all the other YA books out there and I am so glad that I found it! The sequel, Cursed, has already been released as well so you wont have to wait for the story to continue.

posting my review later today

NOW here is my review!

Ivy Taylor wanted so bad a kiss from the Valefar boy. But he got more than a kiss- he got her soul.

This book is breath taken. Ivy clearly doesn't know who is her enemy and who is her ally. And you surely don't know either.

Something more... She's starts to fall in love and it's hard, because he's supposed to be her enemy! I really love the love part because they are just perfect for each other, you know?

She's not either one of them, or one of the others. She's unique. I liked that about her, but she is so scared... she's so scared that they'd kill her, if they find out.

It is a really amazing book and if you want something to read and you don't know what, choose Demon Kissed. You will not regret!

This book has to be on my top 10 book series. It takes place in a modern time where, Ivy Taylor; our badass main character, lives with her mom. She was told her older sister was killed in a car accident, and is quick to realize that it is not the only lie shes's ever been told. When she is attacked by a Valefar, she is thrust in a world she never new existed. This "new world" Is in a turmoil war with the Valefar on one side and the Martis on the other, and she is the only one that can stop it. Alone and occasionally with friends she must navigate through a world surrounded by people who want to kill her. She must not only stay alive, but she has to watch out who she trusts because betrayal is not a foreign action to the people surrounding her.

My biggest issue with this book was that it was too long. I got 50% through the book and realized that not much has happened yet. It did get more interesting towards the end but by then I was too bored. It also didn't help that you never really knew if you could trust Collin or Eric. They both were hiding things from her. Maybe someday I might venture into book 2 but for right now I will skip it.

The strongest beginning I've read in a while. Grabs you from page 1, that's for sure.
A really enjoyable read. I loved the concept of a demon war, and Ivy is a great example of those strong supernatural heroines I'm so fond of. My favorite was Connor, though. He rules.
