This is a WONDERFUL cookbook!! I found it at a second hand store in top condition and it is adorable beyond the fact that it has incredible sounding recipe's in it and even three that I have been looking for! YUMMY!
I really love this cookbook. I have had it for about five years. It is one that I go back to every year to read through and look at the artwork. I always get it out this time of year (the holidays) because it has one of my favorite sweet potato and cranberry recipes. All the recipes I have made have turned out wonderfully.
I mainly bought this book for displaying as decor as this book is lovely! Every single page is uniquely and beautifully illustrated in watercolor. It's nostalgic and kitschy in the best possible way.
The recipes seem great. I haven't made many yet but I'm working on it and will update later when I have more of a feel for them. The savory ones do seem fairly chicken-heavy, which is fine, but odd. I don't think there's a single recipe I don't want to try, though, which is honestly rare for me.
I also love that some of the recipes have shortcuts here and there; some call for premade doughs and a can once in a while (but no cream-of soups as far as I've noticed, I know some ppl really dislike those). I already have tons of books where everything is either labor intensive and completely made from scratch, or others that are just dump a bunch of stuff in a crockpot style of cooking. This book seems like a good middle ground, leaning toward the from-scratch end of the spectrum but with some time saving steps.
The handwriting font used throughout the book, including for the recipes, is just a tad hard to focus on but not unreadable.
Interspersed through the book are little tidbits about life, like hosting, spending time on family, being grateful for what you have, and packing meaningful lunches for others.
Every Shelly Reeves Smith/Roxie Kelly cookbook I get my hands on, I think "THIS is the best one they've done!", and this is no exception. The recipes are great, the art is lovely, the personal notes make me feel as though Shelly and Roxie are in my kitchen discussing recipes and loved ones.
