This is actually a new version of a textbook I read in a Coursera course. Fantastic and covers a lot of information.

Very good experience. Reading Wright's book gave me a good perspective on the development of music over several centuries. Since it came with a single music cd included, that helped to whet my taste for listening to more. As one might expect, for a few dollars more, the whetted appetite could be satisfied with the additional purchase of a set of 6 cd's especially issued for Listening to Music and the listening exercises that are included therein. Well worth the money if one is willing to go to the trouble of finding the right set to match the edition that you have. I originally got the book for a Music Appreciation course and have never regretted it for a second. I highly recommend this comprehensive treatment of music over the ages.

This was my textbook for a Music Appreciation course. Overall, the content of the book was good; however, if you have no experience with music or play by ear, learning the material is more difficult. I play music by ear and do not know how to read notes, so it was a little more challenging for me to learn the material as it was all completely new and took time for it to make sense in my short 8 week course. I am also not classical trained or experienced with any of the terms prior to the course and reading. A pro is the listening guides were extremely helpful in breaking down each piece of music we listened too, and I did enjoy some (but not all) of the music we listened too (based on personal preference of music). An access code is required when you purchase the book to download the music files to listen to the material taught in the book.

In my music studies and career, I have read plenty of music textbooks. Strengths: 1) readability for a general audience 2) includes online resources 3) concise in terms of the material 4) available also in eBook format as well as a hard copy version of the text 5) use of music samples by current artists who may be more familiar to present-day students.

The author provides pertinent information and keeps the reader engaged. Includes references to popular culture, which may help the reader make relevant connections from historical and factual information to recent and current trends in music. The "What to Listen For" pointers are good and direct the readers/listeners to the main aspects to be discovered in each piece. This is an excellent, thorough text for today's college student and is presented in a format that is interesting and makes it easy to grasp the content.Includes a survey with terrific supporting materials, maps, graphs in different colors, and good timelines.

I really enjoyed this book. There is a reasonably good balance between music theory(or technical aspects), the composers, and their music. I really liked following a piece of music in the book while hearing it in the (not included) 5-CD set.

Excellent broad coverage. If you have the means, I recommend reading the print copy and buying a license to use the electronic version for its active listening guides, YouTube playlists, and interactive quizzes.

Got this book for my Music Appreciation class. If you know music, you really don't need this book. However, I learned a few things.
