I loved the first two novels in this series, however I didn't enjoy this one as much. Each book tells the story from one of the three main characters points of view. The first two novels were from the perspectives of Luke and Peter and this one was from Jordan's perspective. I have found it a little bit confusing to adjust to the different perspective in each book. It tends to take me a bit of time before I remember which character's point of view I am reading from. The storyline in mutation was ok and things around Phoenix just keep getting stranger and stranger. I can't really pin point why I didn't like this one as much as the others. Maybe it is because things are just getting a little bit too weird for me? The story was left on a cliff hanger (again!) and I will read the next one to see what happens.

All the books in this series are constant action. Never boring. There's not a lot of character development, so I didn't really get sucked in emotionally, but I never wanted to put the books down because I just had to know what happened next.

Some spoilers follow:

I was asked to review this series a month ago for a school library just the day after I’d finished five of the books.

This necessitated me having to read them again because I couldn’t remember what had happened in each book individually since basically they form one story unit which counts down the 100 days to the end of the world. I’ve not only enjoyed reading them again but feel I picked up on the major significant clue I overlooked the first time around.

There was always a feel about the first couple of books in the series that it might turn from a pre-dystopian adventure thriller into hardcore sf and this is exactly what happens by the end of the fourth book. At this stage it’s clear there’s time-travelling in the air.

The storyline revolves around fifteen-year-old Luke who arrives with his newly divorced mum in the spooky town of Phoenix with its brand new cookie-cutter houses. She’s been offered an amazingly well-paid job by the Shackletown Corporation. Little does Luke realise as he makes friends with Jordan and Peter that his arrival was a signal to begin a countdown for the destruction of the outside world in exactly 100 days.

Behind Shackleton’s façade of a kindly old man lurks the mind of a genocidal megalomanic who wants to rid the world of the human plague and start again with some specially selected genetically suitable candidates. Which, as it turns out, Luke and his mum are not.

As the countdown ticks away, Luke and his friends become aware of the plot. They become wary of enlisting adult help because Shackleton murders the adults in front of them to teach them a lesson. Meanwhile strange things are happening: Peter’s crush on Jordan turns into a monumental obsession, Jordan’s visions of the past and future are becoming brief visitations to those times. Their school friends are developing strange talents: Amy can run hyper fast; Jeremy is starting to leave ‘skin prints’ on anyone he touches.

The security men in Phoenix find the desire of their head, Calvin, to murder Jordan and Luke just a little too much. One of them is killed refusing to be involved. As Miller fights Calvin, Jordan and Luke get away as per Jordan's vision.

In an underground room, Jordan and Luke discover someone has been watching them and Peter from the time they were born.

The cliffhangers at the end of the later stories in the series are amazing.

I just hope the last book in the series lives up to its promise.

As I guessed, this third instalment of The Phoenix Files is from Jordan’s perspective. It takes a while to adjust to the different voice – I find myself reading some narrative near the start and thinking “That’s not something Peter would say,” and then realising “Of course, it’s Jordan narrating now!” But overall, I really like this idea of getting into the head of each main character at a time. I’ve been enjoying it because with this obviously comes the ability to see into the homes of each character. We don’t just learn more about Luke, Peter and Jordan, but also slowly discover things about their families and how other characters interact with them.

This story is just as mysterious and sinister as the previous books and as the plot unfolds I start to grow suspicious of characters who previously looked trustworthy, and start to wonder about previously suspicious characters being perhaps on the ‘good’ side. I love this constant speculating Morphew causes me to do. He continually throws in these little bits of dialogue or events that make you stop... and wonder and suspect...

He maintains a nice level of action – it’s not too action-filled and over the top, and again, it’s all about the mystery. I find it easy to follow what’s happening in the action scenes. The descriptions are detailed enough but not so much that the narrative becomes wordy and tiring.
There’s a new mystery unfolding during this book and it makes me second guess everything I thought I understood or presumed from clues given earlier in the series. Morphew is very skilled at keeping us guessing! It’s very interesting and I’ll certainly be quick to start the next one.

Nothing is going right in Jordan’s life ever since Luke appeared in Phoenix. Her life has been thrown into turmoil, enemies out to kill her, her mother’s pregnancy, but now there’s a fear that grips her. Her baby sister is displaying signs similar to herself and the danger for them all is growing. Can Jordan save her family and protect her friends or is she fighting a battle that will claim her life and those she loves?

I’m not going to lie. Jordan annoys me when it comes to Peter. Peter has tried so hard to help protect her, even placing his own father on the line, and she continues to write him off. Hardly even giving him a glance that contains anything but anger or annoyance;

 photo k74_zps34e129fb.gif
Poor Peter.

But Jordan does have a strong sense of loyalty to her family and friends. All her actions can be traced back to her desperation to get her family out of there. At the same time she worries that her parents are starting to understand that something isn’t just wrong about the town but that someone is out to get their daughter.

 photo inasecond_zps29da5a62.gif
Jordan isn’t lacking in her loyalty to her family. But maybe she can stop getting her friends almost killed?

Jordan is plagued by an oddity; This new ability is causing Jordan both a lot of trouble and is helping her out when she desperately needs it. But is it a good thing?

The friendship between Luke and Jordan changes ever so slightly, becoming seemingly more romantic, but Luke holds back out of his friendship with Peter.

I hope it doesn’t happen. Luke annoys me.

 photo k57_zps7ea9d777.gif
Jordan and Luke? I seriously hope not.

But Jordan isn’t the only one going through changes. Peter is changing in a big way. He’s becoming more dangerous, scary even. His temper and moods fling wildly and he is becoming a liability to their mission.

This was the third book out of six, and so far they continue to get better. This book had the suspense and action continue to build all the way to the end. I had trouble putting the book down. Can't wait to start the next book.

I gave the book, The Phoenix Files: Mutation five stars. There were so many good things throughout this book. There was lots of action from the beginning to the end. Something already exploded on page six of the book. There was also tons of suspense. I kept realizing that I was tensed up while I was reading. To go along with the suspense, there was lots of mystery as well. Questions from the previous book in the series were answered. While, new questions were posed in this book. Similar to the previous book in the series, different words are italicized to give emphasis to the word. This helped me to better understand dialogue between the characters. The book also came to an ending while also keeping interest to read the next book in the series. It wasn’t much of a happy ending, but now I really want to read the next book. The Phoenix Files: Mutation was very similar in the things I liked about the previous book in the series. However, The Phoenix Files: Mutation was better than the previous book because it had action throughout. The previous book had all of the suspense and mystery. However, it lacked all of the action that The Phoenix Files: Mutation has. The Phoenix Files: Mutation has all of the action, mystery, and suspense. That is why it deserved five stars. Another aspect that I liked about this book and the entire series was the point of view in which each book is told. Each book is first person. However, the narrator changes from character to character in each book. The Phoenix Files: Mutation was told from Jordan Burke’s point of view. Now each of the three main characters have been the narrator of one of the three books in the series that I have read so far. I think it would be interesting if one of the antagonists of the series was the narrator in one of the books to come.

While I gave The Phoenix Files: Mutation five stars, all books can still be improved on. As I mentioned above, I didn’t enjoy the ending very much. Not because it was poorly written, but because it just left me disappointed and wondering how the main characters will get out of their situation. The ending was good and well-written, but not one that I enjoyed. Since each book is narrated by a different character things can get a little confusing. Sometimes the narrator of this book, Jordan, would make a call back to something that happened in a previous book told by a different character. Things can get confusing and hard to remember because Jordan is bringing up her feelings or recounting a situation that was told by a different main character. When this happened, I was racking my brain trying to remember the details of the situation as told by one of the other main characters. While it is cool seeing and hearing different points of view, things can still get a bit confusing. Overall, I thought The Phoenix Files: Mutation was a very good book with lots of action, suspense, and mystery. I would recommend it to anyone in middle school or older who loves action. This is a good book for someone who may find themselves getting bored while reading books because the action keeps you interested. This book also will keep you in it because you are constantly having to piece events and clues together.

3.5 stars.. I think my favorite it the series so far. This is told from Jordan's POV, so maybe I related to the girl's perspective instead of teenage boy's POV. She's a little impulsive, but brave and smart. Lots of progress to various story lines, but I still have no idea what is going on.

The book cover art is intriguing me. I've looked at all the covers in the series and I am very impressed with the seemingly innocuous covers.

Day 63 - 49

Likes:
* Covers are telling a subtle story
* All parents are still married, only Luke's mom is divorced and alone

Dislikes:
* Town named Phoenix keeps bringing Phoenix, AZ to mind
* Peter's jealousy and anger
* Jordan's impetuous behavior, especially in dangerous situations
* Awkward unreciprocated teenage crush
* Sworn to secrecy
* No answers, just unexplainable findings
* Not a ton happens in this book, just more bumbling about by our 3 heroes
* Another cliffhanger ending, but I'm thinking more like segments of story, not individual books

With-reservations:
violence, murder, torture, threats, bullying, end of world/apocalypse, mental illness, kidnapping

I read The Phoenix Files Book 3: Mutation by Chris Morphew. I liked this book a lot. All of the books in the series switch from each main characters perspective and its really cool to see how all of the people in the book think. I like the books that are on Luke's perspective more, sadly this one was on Jordan, I really like her character, she is great. I just like Luke a little bit more. My favorite character in this book was also Luke. I really like that he is the only one that can pull Jordan out of her "visions". He is also a peacemaker and doesn't want anything bad to happen to anyone, even if it is one of his enemies. My least favorite character is either Peter or Soren. I can't really decide. I really don't like Peter because he won't leave Jordan alone, even when she tells him that she doesn't feel the same way that he feels about her. I also don't like Soren because he is just a maniac that looks like he wants everything to go wrong. This was an amazing book and I can't wait to finish the series.

I really enjoyed the first two books of this series. The characters are great, especially Peter with his sarcasm and the storyline is very interesting. It kinda reminds me of the maze runner meets with tomorrow when the war began.
However, I didn't enjoy this one as much, mainly because I prefer Jordan as a semi-main character in the other two books. Her story just doesn't interest me as much as the other two characters.
But overall, it's great to see how the rest of the series will play out.

Over all, I thought that this book was pretty good, and I found it quite interesting how every book the perspective of who you're reading changes. The book was really entertaining and fun to read. My favourite character in this book was Peter, even though they made him into a bit of a git near the end. He just felt like the most fleshed out character, and he was also really fun to read from his perspective. Something that I have learned about this book is that "no matter how bad things are they can get a lot worse" Over all out of 5 stars, I would give it 4.

For better or for worse? That is the question to the cliffhanger ending. Another great book in the series. Again it follows Peter, Luke and Jordan but being Jordan this time the book is in first person of her.
I read this book in two days flat. If I had nothing to do and a butler to bring me food and drink upon request I would have finished this book in one sitting. Such a good book can't wait to read book four in the suspenseful series The Phoenix Files by Chris Morphew.

Mutation is told from the point of view of Jordan. The people of the town of Phoenix are starting to change. Jordan is struggling to understand her new power. Frequently, she will have a a vision of the past or future. Peter's anger is getting the better of him, and his jealousy of Luke is starting to become a problem. Whenever Jeremy touches someone, that parts of the other person's skin turns white. Tank, Mike, and Cathryn enter the picture and Peter tries to infiltrate their group, as the three seem to have a big secret. Georgia, Jordan's younger sister, seems to be gaining the ability to read other people's minds.

Time is running out in the town of Phoenix. Out heroes discover a video of what is really going on. They are appalled to find out that the leaders of the town have been performing experiments on people with a virus that kills every host, in quite a gross manner. Armed with this knowledge, Luke, Jordan, and Peter realize that they must stop the virus from being released, as that is what the town leaders are planning. Time is running out!

Chris Morphew adds another book to this wonderfully-written Australian thriller that should not be missed. The action is a constant and the story moves along at a frantic pace. I never quite know what is going to happen next, which is a good thing. So far, I find this series to be quite entertaining and end up thinking about it a lot during the day while I am at work.

The only thing I don't like about this series is that each book is viewed through a different person's eyes. The first book was from was Luke's point of view. Then it was Peter's turn. Now it seen through Jordan's eyes. I am guessing the next book will have Luke as the main character again. This makes it a little difficult as the reader because I sometimes forget that the book is not from Luke's point of view. So, I end up thinking that Luke is talking, when it is really Jordan. This is confusing and the author should not have done this. Just keep it from Luke's point of view. Oh, well . . . its too late to listen to me anyway.

Overall, Mutation is another great addition in this thrilling adventure series that will surely keep the reader flying through the pages late into the night. I really enjoyed this continuation of The Phoenix Files and highly recommend it to all readers who want a lot of action mixed with an intriguing storyline. I cannot wait to see what happens next in Underground. It sure sounds like the main characters will be in hiding from the authorities from Phoenix. I cannot wait to read it.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.

Phoenix Files: Mutation By:Chris Morphew
The Phoenix Files: Mutation is the third installment in Chris Morphew’s young adult series. The previous two books (arrival and contact) were set in Phoenix.Phoenix is a city in the middle of nowhere that has been built by the Shackleton Co-operative. In Phoenix, no one drives cars, there is no police force (just Shackleton’s security) and there is no access to the outside world by phone or internet. And in Phoenix, someone is counting down the last hundred days until the end of the world. The series follows three teenagers: Luke, Jordan and Peter. The first two books are written from the perspective of Luke and Peter and respectively the third is written from the perspective of Jordan.

Jordan has a rebellious nature which makes her a target for people in positions of Authority including the owner of Phoenix, Shackleton. She also finds herself becoming an object of love for both Peter and Luke as they continuously fight over her. Along with the worries of a teenage girl, Jordan also worries for her mother who has been having a very unusual pregnancy as well as her sister who has been developing an some unusual powers which nobody but her notices. The book as a very fast paced thriller with twists and turns which will keep you on your toes. The book also includes several enemies instead of one and the three teenagers are always trying to determine who is actually the real enemy.

My favorite scene in the book was when Jordan and Luke were looking for Peter who had gone missing. The scene included Jordan and Luke being chased by the “Police” whacked by other teenagers and finding a secret base. The end of the scene is the end of the book at it leaves you on a massive cliff hanger which makes you want to read the next one. The reason I loved this chapter so much is because we found out so much about the characters which we had never learnt about them before but all that information was included with some very good action sequences which kept you on your toes.

My second favorite scene was a very short yet emotional scene. Jordan had just recieved a note telling her to meet at the school at 6:00 at night. Jordan had no idea what was going on but went any way. When Jordan arrived she found peter had made a dinner for her and Peter to eat. Jordan was so angry with Peter that when she saw him she turned around and went back to her home saying only very few words to Peter.

Altogether this is a very well written thriller and although not flawless. You never do notice the flaws which are so tiny. 4.5/5

Hello my friends of the dream, i am Chris Huston here with another book review that i will be posting up onto goodreads, so let’s see what they want me to do with this one. OK it says that my first paragraph i need to talk about an important theme in the book. Now i don't have the book on me but i will be using the one that i used for the theme paragraph for this review, so let’s get started.

So the theme i found is that not everything is what what they seem, this is actually a good point and it is very true in the real world. Now I have two quotes to prove this theme that coincide with each other. The first quote is on page #163 and says ””my first thought was Mike, Catherine, and Tank.”” (morphew 163) and the second one is on page #168 and says “”I swung the stone up in front of me, leapt out from around the corner- and found out that i was dealing with something completely different”” (morphew 168) this shows surprise and what she was expecting was not what she saw.

Now this book is the 3rd in the series and is amazing in my opinion and i’m not here to give you my opinion i’m here to give you facts about the book. Now in the back of the book it says “”Jordan’s world is falling apart. She is a prisoner in her skin, trapped by an enemy who can paralyze her with a push of a button””. This little part of the description is actually really true to the story now of course no spoilers. Luke, Jordan, and Peter are at it again trying to stop Shackleton while trying to beat many obstacles in their way. The genre this book would fall under is action adventure because it gives you the sense like you’re really there and you almost don’t want to stop reading if it’s at night but you won’t want to stop reading in the day. Now this book really isn’t realistic but it is at the same time because people could get shot at in real life but they can’t have supernatural powers. That’s what is good that i can give you about the book so i will end it off here. so have good dreams tonight and stay out of trouble and i will see you guys next time, bye-bye.

This is the third book in the Phoenix Files series. Jordan feels like she's going insane. Not only is she having frightening visions of things that haven't happened yet, but she's being tracked by an enemy who can paralyse her at the touch of a button. Her mother is pregnant but the pregnancy is abnormal and the baby is developing at an accelerated rate. In fact it is due on Day Zero of the countdown. And now her family is desperate to leave Phoenix but they are thwarted in all their efforts. Jordan can't tell them that if they do, they'll die. What's going on with the other kids at school? (Mike Tunk and Cathryn) They seem to know other secrets and they find them in a cave. Later on, Cathryn confesses to Jordan that they have kidnapped Peter because the Overseers told them to do so. Who are the overseerers? Are they the white, angelic -looking but strike you down in awe and terror that Mike has drawn in his sketch book? At the end of the book, Jordan uses her vision to escape with Luke into an old building and there they find a tunnel and Peter in it. Down there as well, they find detailed information about all three of them going right back to their childhood - before even Phoenix. Peter tries to tell them to get out while they can but a young man and a woman in her 50s appear dressed in white. By this stage, Shackleton had activated their suppressors - they collapse to the ground in agony. The book ends by the woman saying how long they have been waiting for Luke Hunter. As if all that's not enough, something weird is happening to the people of Phoenix...The clock is still ticking. There are 63 days until the end of the world.

Mutation comes from Jordan's point of view. She begins to notices strange occurrences happening to the people of Phoenix. Jordan is receiving visions of the past and future, Peter is spiraling out-of-control more than ever, her younger sister is reading minds, her mum's baby is growing rapidly inside and it will be due August 13 - the same day Tabitha will eradicate the world outside, and she notices the rest of Phoenix's citizens are becoming super-powered, except for Luke. Peter's old friends, Cathryn, Mike and Tank, have been disappearing each day after school and Jordan, Luke and Peter find out they have been worshiping mysterious overseers who tell them they have a destiny. Soon after, when all of Phoenix has to take a blood test, Peter severely bashes Mr Hanger, one of the high school's most despised teachers. Subsequently, his suppressor is activated. After being sent to the Phoenix Medical Center, Peter is kidnapped by Cat, Mike and Tank. Luke and Jordan set out to rescue him but it backfires when they find an abandoned complex and suppressors are activated. In the complex, they are confronted by a young man and an older woman who have been tracking them their whole lives.

As I have mentioned in a review on the second book, Morphew writes these books in a way that allows the readers to see the different points of view of each character. This book was written through Jordan's (one of the characters) eyes, giving the chance to see what she has to deal with and what she hides under her tough exterior. By the third book in the series I have had the opportunity to read through all of the three main characters eyes. I've gotten to finally see Jordan's view on Peter and Luke, the two other main characters. I found this book to, maybe, be thee most intense to read, of the three I have read in this series. I believe this is because I don't only have the information from the third book, but I also have the previous insight from the first two in the series. Now that I can understand the three characters better, I am excited to start the next book, which I predict will be told through Luke's eyes. This book ended at quite an intense cliff hanger.

A review of all Books - Arrival - Contact - Mutation - Underground - Fallout - Doomsday

I Love YA and when I stumbled upon this series it was likened to Michael Grant's Gone series so I was definitely inclined to love it.
But I was initially disappointed... the first few books dragged and only because I love a series I continued.
I am thoroughly glad I did. Some of the "off" moments that I didn't understand in the early books came together. Not NEATLY mind you... there were some moments when I wondered "How did HE get there?" but ultimately it was an interesting, convoluted but intriguing way to conclude the final books. It made me realise why only writers get away with this. This stuff is pretty one off in the imagination stakes.

I applaud it and encourage people to stay in there for the conclusion of the series.

Similarly to the first book, but with a few added developments. Spoilers - ----- oKAY, so assuming you want spoilers or you have read the book or you randomly start reading from the end of people's reviews. Here goes: Luke isnt even meant to be there. Good old Jordan is mutated to having visions, Peter has super strength, Amy is super fast etc etc. Oh, that might be more important in the next few books.

Liked this book. But still not my favourite.
