Frank Sharp was born in Govan, Glasgow, on 10 August 1938. After postgraduate training in Glasgow, he took up the position of senior lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff in 1973 before returning to Glasgow as senior lecturer in midwifery.
