Originally hailing from the piney woods along the Alabama/Florida border, J. Steven York has wandered between many genres (science fiction, fantasy, mystery) and points on the map.

Though he now lives on the Pacific shore in Oregon, his current mystery series "Panorama Beach," is set in the sunny Florida panhandle during the 1960s, and its fictional environs are inspired by his real-life ancestral roots there, and his happy visits to the gulf coast when he was a child.

Road trip! This is a nice prose X-novel that takes Banshee, the White Queen, Husk, Chamber, Jubilee, Skin, Synch, and M across the country in Winnebagos to fun and romance and violence. It's a terrific counterpoint to some of the brooding, gloomy, introspective man vs. mutant storylines, with plenty of fan-favorite moments mixed in with the mayhem. 'nuff said...Make Mine Marvel!

Back in the mid-90's, Generation X was the next big 'teenage mutants" thing. The X-men Original Flavor were now back with X-men, after a brief stint as X-Factor. The 2nd group of Mutants (HAvok & Polaris) were now the new X-Factor. The New Mutants were now X-Force, lead by no Ankled, DAMN THAT IS A HUGE GUN Cable.
So, we needed a new team of Teen Mutants.
Enter Generation X.
They took Banshee and Emma Frost (both sort of forgotten over the years), and added familiar faced Jubilee, the younger sister of Cannonball , and then added mutants that were new to readers . Skin. Synch. M. Chamber.
By the end of the 90's, Marvel was trying it's hand at other things - in this case, original novels with some of their popular characters. And this applied to Generation X.

The team find themselves taking a road trip across the country. And along the way, they make some friends - save some folks- and try to confront the hatred and bigotry of a radio host. (Telling you, the radio host parts could have been based on today's current events - Part Rush Limbaugh, Part Donald Trump, and a hint of Info Wars).

I read the first Generation X book back in the spring of 2000. I was on a hiatus from comics (forced hiatus. #MarriageMeansMakingSacrifices), so when the local library got a copy of the Generation X book, I was first one to check it out and read it. And 20 years later, I read the 2nd book in the series. But while I read the last one, to answer my quest for some familiar hero stories, this time, it was to get myself in the spirit of the (hopefully) soon to be release (and LONG overdue) movie of New Mutants.

And who knows- when they finally Do get around to releasing the movie- say 2039 - I will have one more Generation X book available for me to read.

Good for what it is. As an adult I read it pretty much just for the nostalgia and I got what I expected.

This book is a fun piece of nostalgia for me, but more importantly, the message of the book about media manipulation is even more impactful today. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't know what Author was thinking, atleast Generation X by Scott Lobdel was quite good. But this is way bad. So boring that I left it in half.
It is totally unrelated to Gen X. Leave it

This story follows members of Generation X, a group of teenaged mutants, as they embark on a cross country road trip. Along the way, they end up battling a bigoted radio host and a group of fanatical terrorists.

Although this book will never be mistaken for literary fiction, J. Steven York’s writing is certainly more than adequate. He manages to create depth in his characters and weaves a story that is quickly paced and quite engaging. Overall, this was a fun book to read!

My unabashed fangirlishness is responsible for this rating and I'm not even going to apologize for it, not even a little bit. Objective and unbiased I am NOT.

That being sad, this book wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be, considering I'd never even realized that there were Gen X novels and didn't hear good things once I did know about them. Sure, it's a little cheesy and corny in parts of it, and sure, Jono's British slang was sometimes terrible enough to drive me a little batty, but the comics were that way, too. The characterization was great, and for something written in 1998, the underlying conflict in the book (the effect that biased media channels have on social issues like racial prejudice) is surprisingly relevant. Plus, there's a lot of "team" moments in the book, and I love those. (Fangirl, remember?)

It was like reading a well-written fanfiction and I'm not even going to pretend to dislike that.
