I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

I found this book to be a "go between" between the last book and the next in the series.

We don't get many visits from the Zoms since it's winter and I think most of this is leading up to the next book.

There are some deaths of key players

Build Up... are the best words I can think of to describe this book

Told from Axl, Vivian, Ginny and Jon POV's

I really enjoyed this one! I have been having such a good time with this series and am so glad that I happened upon it. This book is the fifth book in the Broken World series which really does need to be read in order since each book picks up right where the previous one left off. At this point, I really feel like I know all of these characters and am eager to see them survive in their harsh world. This book was just a really great read.

This book is told from four different points of view. We get to see things from Axl's and Vivian's point of view with their group inside the gated community and from Hadley's and Jon's inside the town of Hope Springs. I really like the fact that the author has used different points of view from book to book because it really does serve to give a much broader view of the world. Each of the four characters really did have a lot to add to the overall story.

Vivian and Axl are with the main group inside a gated community. Things are actually pretty good but supplies are running low and the morale is even lower. This group has had to deal with a lot of really difficult loses and some are not able to move on. Both Vivian and Axl are leaders in their group and they take that responsibility very seriously working hard to keep everyone safe and fed.

Hadley, or Ginny, and Jon have settled into Hope Springs. Hadley is sheltered within the community because they see her pregnancy as the hope for the future. Jon is put to work clearing streets and looking for survivors. He meets some people that he knows he can trust with his life and others he wouldn't turn his back on. It was really nice to get to see them living and almost normal life.

This book was pretty exciting. The zombies were not quite as dangerous since they are moving slowly in the winter but there was still a lot of action to go around. We had to say goodbye to a few characters. I really enjoyed watching Jon and Ginny's relationship develop in this book. There is no doubt that they care about each other just as much as Vivian and Axl. The characters are so well done in this series and I have really enjoyed watching them grow over the course of the series.

I would definitely recommend this series to others. I think that this is a very well done series set in the zombie apocalypse built around fantastic characters. I cannot wait to see what will happen next!

Initial Thoughts
I enjoyed this one. This book is told from 4 points of view: Vivian, Axl, Ginny, and Jon. I think I am really liking all of these characters but it was really nice to get a glimpse inside of Jon's head. There were some pretty big developments in this book along with a couple of character deaths. I cannot wait to see what will happen next.

4 Just Making it Possible Stars

New World is book five of the Broken World series. I love this series mega much, it’s very hard to find a good zombie book, but I will be honest and say it wasn’t my favorite. I even took one break! BUT the BEST part of this book is JON’s POV!!!!!

I feel like New World was kind of a filler book, not completely, but there are points where I questioned if it was necessary or needed. Just some parts of the book, not all, regardless, I still adore the book.

Hadley is now Ginny, so it’s Ginny and Jon against the world. I simply love it. I love this couple and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jon’s POV. Ginny treated Jon like poop in the last book and yes they overcame some obstacles, but how did Jon feel all this time? His love for Ginny shines through and it was addictive to read.

It was a real treat reading Jon’s inner struggles and emotions as he fights his guilt towards Ginny, also his need to protect her at all cost. I also love that he loves Ginny’s baby even if it might not be his and we kind of know it’s not right?

Jon and Ginny still live in Hope Springs and they are taking it one day at a time. This book focuses on the daily activities of Hope Springs, how the community clears out the zombies and how people interact with each other. Of course there will always be good and bad people right?

New World read a bit more angst to me and that’s something VERY difficult for me to read. I’m not that type of reader that likes to pull my hair out, but when the author foreshadows some high filled tension moments, I was on edge. There are plenty of new characters to get to know and not all are good.

Axl and Vivian still live with Brady and his community. Axl and Vivian’s relationship struggle a bit and it was also hard to read. Axl goes back to being more of a brute and accepting his brother’s ways more and Vivian goes back to being a bit selfish, at least in my opinion. I applaud the author for keeping the tension high and the story going, but I love happy stories even if it’s in the midst of gore. I didn’t like all the negative scenes, but I can appreciate it.

And more people die, some I agree and some I was just sadden by.

Throughout the whole book I kept on wondering when will Jon / Ginny and Axl / Vivian meet again. That probably caused an ulcer in my mouth because I was on pins and needles the whole story. But don’t worry the answer to that question will be answered.

I’m ready for the next book and hopefully it won’t be the last one. Can’t wait to find out.

Winter is upon our group of survivors , that means very minimal zombie action and more of dealing with humans ... Loved that the book was divided between 4 PoV's... we get a Jon POV as well omg I can't! The guy is madly in love Hadley/Ginny and wants to make everything right for her .. the other pov includes Vivian , Axl and Ginny ... Speaking of Vivian and Axl , umm what's up with you guys !!! These were my relationship goals during a zombie apocalypse... always there for each other , but their relationship has reached a straining point... And that was really uncomfortable.

Onto book 6 ...

It’s official, I have become a Broken World addict. I went from not liking any of the characters in book one, to staying up to late to finish book five because the story has sucked me in.
“You forget what you want to remember, and you remember what you want to forget.” Brady whispers. “I started reading The Road-it seemed fitting given our current circumstances-and came upon the quote last night. For what felt like an hour I just stared at it. There’s so much truth in that statement, don’t you think?”
How cool that this book quoted one of my favorite end-of-the-world books! If you haven't had a chance to read it The Road is both brilliant, and devastating.

Angus is once again making me like him. His character shows the most personal growth out of all the survivors. He was such an obnoxious racist and icky womanizer in the first book. You can tell his relationship with Winston and other minorities in their group has helped him to see people in a more open view.
"If I can trust anyone with his life, Angus, it's you," Vivian replies. Unfortunately, you aren't God."

Brady snorts and glances up at Vivian. "Unfortunately? Can you imagine a world where Angus had god-like powers?"

"Right" she says, laughing'. "Women would be walking around naked and dip would grow on trees."
This quote is particularly funny and equally worrisome considering what we know the CDC is looking for.

These books are like candy to me. I have come to love these characters so much. This series is my cure to the January blues.

This is book 5 of the series and the writing just keeps getting better with every book. I find they never have a huge plot to pull the story. Instead we get similar to the previous book, being more about character moments and arcs rather than big twists and turns. Much more interesting in my opinion.

Vivian and Axl are trying to pull the group through a rough winter at the gated community. Supplies are down and so are the spirits of the group. Axl proves to be a hardworking leader and Vivian is just as determined. I honestly love everyone in this group/family. All the characters have such distinct voice and personalities.

Hadley/Ginny and Jon are living their new life at Hope Springs and preparing for their baby. I honestly find Hadley so dull. I don't think I have every really liked her so I don't find her story all that entertaining. Jon however has much more of a part in this and his struggle with guilt and grief kept me engaged with their storyline.

I love the new addition of Jim and hope he joins our team officially as the series continues. The deaths in this book hit me way harder than they should of, which is proof that the author knows how to create complexed and realistic characters.

I think my only criticism is the first half of the book was a little dry. Maybe because I find Hadley so boring.

I really hope we continue with the multiple points of view. I would love to hear more from other characters.

Shout out for Angus being the warrior he is. Love me some Angus! 🧡

I have really been enjoying this lady's series a LOT! I'm taking my sweet time with it because one - it's too good to blaze through it. Two - I have other stuff I'm reading, too, and I like to kind of keep a little bit of balance here. Three - did I mention how good it is and it shouldn't just be torn through like a kid at Christmastime? ;) Wow, Kate, you know how to make a girl go through the whole gambit of emotions! One page had me going, 'OH, yeah, this is amazing,' and then the next page... BAM! You had me crying. And then the next, I was shaking a fist and ready to throw my book... but it's a good thing it's an e-copy, or I'd have busted my kindle. LOL Nonetheless.... WOW. Once I'm done with the #BrokenWorld series, I'm going to get the other series you have out and read 'em!

For anyone who's looking for a damn good series on zombies... SEARCH NO MORE. Go read this one. It's so worth it!

So there was me, with The Walking Dead withdrawal symptoms and in need of more zombie apocalypse stuff, when I remembered this series I'd meant to keep up with. I re-read the first and the second, then decided to get this next one. I have no longer got episode 4, Lost World, as I'd downloaded it on Kindle Unlimited, and I have a shocking memory, but, happily, most of the story made its way back into my head as I started reading this, and I discovered that it actually works okay as a stand alone, or near enough.

The two groups from Lost World are enduring their first zombie winter in snow-covered Colorado, and wondering what happened to their friends from whom they were separated. One group is in a small community of about twelve, one in a much larger one, numbering about 200. But, of course, with any community comes leadership wrangles that are only just beginning. And what will happen when the zombies thaw out?

This is a cracking series, a real easy read if you like this sort of thing. It's told from the points of view of ex stripper Vivian, redneck-with-a-heart Axl, former Hollywood actress Ginny, and her man, Jon. The characterisation is excellent - I found a new one to love (Jim) and one to hate, too (Dax), and of course there are other worries for all survivors: sometimes the humans are more dangerous than the zombies. I'm still not sure that Hope Springs holds the answer....

For anyone who's been reading these books, there are two sad losses, from the original group, one of which brought tears to my eyes. I have downloaded Book 6, Forgotten World, and am going to start it as soon as I have posted this!

This review and many more can be found on my blog: Feed Your Fiction Addiction

This is the fifth book in the Broken World series, which I adore. This series is full of action and excitement and incredibly complex characters. This fifth installment lives up to the rest of the series. It focuses a lot more on Jon and Hadley, who got separated from the group in the last book. It was kind off refreshing to see something new. Jon and Hadley might be my two favorite characters now (though, of course, I’ll always love Axl and Vivian). Throughout the book, Jon really struggled with his guilt over what happened in Las Vegas. Hadley has completely forgiven him, but he can’t forgive himself nearly as easily. Now, more than anything, Jon wants to give Hadley a safe and secure future – or at least as close to that as is possible in their world! The only reason I’m not giving this book a “full” review is because I feel like I keep stating and restating my reasons for loving this series, and I start to sound a bit like a broken record. My one tiny criticism is that this installment didn’t feel quite as action packed as the others, but that also could have just been my more distracted state while reading it (I have a LOT going on lately). But I am SO excited that book six is coming out later this month!! I barely have to wait!!

Vivian, Axl and their group have finally found a safe place. Things are looking up in some ways but in others they're still very difficult especially with the loss of so many people.

Jon and Ginny don't know what happened to the rest of the group but in Hope Springs they have found a life.

Times are tough as winter sets in but everyone is doing what they can to survive. The biggest questions come with the uncertainty of the future and what will happen down the road.

I for one have become obsessed with this series, seeing how Vivian and all the others are doing surviving and what chalenges they might face next and what is just in general going on with them! You feel like you are a part of this world surviving right along with them, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

This series is masterly amazing.

This series I could not put down. I am not really the type to write a review but I had to. Ms. Mary has put a lot of effort in the characters. It is not the type of feel me good or all the characters never dies. I loved the ups and downs. I loved the flow of the story as it goes. I could not put the books down. I read all five books within 4 days. Ms Mary has really out done herself. She really brought me into the story like I am right there with them. I feel like I am part of the family. Fantastic Job. Can't wait for the next one.

Jon and Hadley/Ginny have found a home in a community with over 200 people. Jon is doing his best to take care of Ginny and her baby. Jon plans on raising her baby as if it is his own even if it may not be his. Everyone in Hope Springs is doing their best to look after Ginny and her baby as well as her baby gives them hope for a better world.

Jon and the people at Hope Spring spend their days cleaning out the town from the dead and undead. Winter has arrived in Colorado, and the cold has slowed down the zombies somewhat, but they are still dangerous and still hungry. Jon and his zombie cleaning partner have a couple of close calls with the zombies while cleaning out the town.

Vivian, Axl, Angus, and the rest of their little group have finally found a safe place in a gated community. Vivian still wonders about Jon and Hadley from time to time wondering if they will ever see them again. Supplies are running low, tempers are flaring. Lives are lost as well as a few close calls with zombies. The cold weather has been brutal. Depression sets in for more than one of the group’s members.

There weren’t as many zombies in New World as in other books, but I do understand why as it was freezing cold and I imagine all the characters were trying to stay inside and stay warm as a brutally cold snowy winter can sometimes be just as dangerous as zombies. I guess the question now is did I like Lost World any less than the rest of the series with it having fewer zombies? No, of course not. I love this world.

New World gave me a chance to get to know more about the characters. I got to see inside Jon’s head as well this time around as New World was told from Vivian, Axl, Ginny, and Jon’s point of view. I like getting a story from more than one character’s point of view especially if they are in different places.

When I was reading New World I got the sense of two worlds colliding. The feeling came over me when Jon was out helping to clear the streets of zombies. New World felt like The Stand meets The Walking Dead.

I fell in love with the Broken World series with the first book and I have been hooked ever since. I can’t seem to get enough of it and definitely can’t wait for the next book. While I wish I had read the Broken World series when the first book, Broken World came out I am also glad that I waited until all the books were out before reading it as I don’t have to wait for the next book as I can read them back to back.

I would like to recommend New World to all zombie fans! If you are a fan of The Walking Dead and/or The Stand one-click your copy of New World today!

After seeing this book had four POV’s, I decided to read another book before I jumped into the fifth book, but I think it helped me get back into this series faster. Similar to the fourth book, I wasn’t thrilled at having Ginny’s (Hadley’s) POV. I wasn’t too thrilled about Jon’s POV either, but his surprised me. I found that having his alongside Ginny’s made the experience better than book four. I ended up reading Jon and Ginny’s sections quicker just so I could get back to Vivian and Axl, but I still liked Jon’s POV. I found it helped me learn more about Hope Springs than Ginny’s POV.

Both groups are still split up from each other, and I was waiting for them to reunite throughout the entire book. Getting to see the group survive through the winter was interesting. I enjoyed getting to see what it would be like during a zombie apocalypse in winter. I didn’t expect the zombies to freeze as much as they did, but it makes sense! The group were faced with threats other than the zombies, and it was interesting to see them combat them.

I agree with most others in that this book felt like filler until the next book, almost like winter had to be rushed through to get to spring and the reunion between the two groups. Regardless, a lot of things happened that I wasn’t expecting which made the read nice. It also made me excited to read book six due to how this book set up the one to come.

As for Vivian and Axl, I felt that I didn’t get as much of their relationship as I wanted. This was likely due to the book being split into parts to get through the winter. I was thrilled to see Axl’s POV return. I love reading what goes on in his head. This time I could see the toll being the leader has taken on him, which made things interesting. I also enjoyed Angus in this book, which seems to be a reoccurring theme. The more I read, the more I like him. Vivian is as wonderful to read as ever. I felt justified that her and Axl are getting annoyed with a few members in their group and how they’ve reacted to certain events because I’ve felt the same. But when they’re together, the book just flows. I’m really looking forward to diving into book six to see what happens next!

This was probably m least favorite book of the series, and the most unnecessary. It felt like the author threw this one in there for filler. Basically, nothing happened. Vivian and Axl and the rest of the group spent the ENTIRE book avoiding Hope Springs because Axl had a "bad feeling." It was so freaking frustrating since Jon and Ginny were there and there was NOTHING bad about it. It pissed me off to have the entire book be about avoiding a place where they could get reunited with their friends. And then when they did decide to go, stuff kept happening to get in the way. Seriously? So really, there weren't that many zombies and there was some death, but the deaths felt like they were put there just to keep them from reuniting with their friends, so it pissed me off. And I know there are a lot of characters in here, but it feels like the author's solution to not knowing what to do with them is to turn them into virtual zombies where they get so grief stricken by what has happened that they turn useless. So then, the only interaction the main characters have with these other side characters is to roll their eyes and yell at them. So annoying. And why does this author have to use SO MUCH foreshadowing? There was a character in this book (no spoilers) who appeared fine in the last book, but suddenly people were getting "bad feelings" and they thought his smile was fake and they felt like they couldn't trust him, blah, blah, blah. And we all know that eventually this person will turn out to be bad because the author has spent so much time telling the reader that something is off. Sorry, but I just did not like this one. There was no plot, no excitement, and way too much time was spent avoiding a place I knew was safe just to try and create suspense. It didn't work for me.

Surviving a harsh winter in Colorado during the Zombie Apocalypse truly tests ones want and need to stay alive. By this book in the series, I feel this is so much more than a series about a killer virus and zombies. The characters have an invested interest in each other. In a way, they feel like family. They irritate each other as family often does. They also work as a team to survive and watch each others backs. They've come to love and care about one another. When one dies at the hands of zombies or bad guys it hits home, BUT when takes their own life, it hurts their hearts more. I'm sure even us readers feel we've gone on this crazy journey right along with Vivian, Axel, Angus and the rest of this miss matched group. We sit on the edge of our seats hanging on every word we read. Though their numbers are dwindling with every book those who are left are staying determined and strong in the hopes that this Broken, Shattered, Mad, Lost, New World won't be Forgotten or be Silent for much longer! Wow, I love this series!!

Kate L Mary brings another layer to a wonderful executed story line with New World, Book 5 in the Broken World series. You MUST absolutely read this series in order to follow along with her band of survivors.

New World is a story of coming together and resettling. Mary has placed her characters behind closed gates safe from zombies, but still brings havoc to their lives as this group licks their wounds since the apocalypse happened. Facing the pain, heart break and fear head one, these survivors struggle through their first winter and their frustrations with each other. Mary also sheds light on a few characters left behind and the new world they've found. Whether it's better or worse on the road is left to be decided as we narrow in on the last remaining books of this series.

Broken World is an absolutely incredible series well worth your time. Mary has made me a HUGE fan having devoured this entire series one book after another. I will be excited to see where they land but also so devastated to end this series.

Yes!

Times are tough during a zombie apocalypse, and winter is no different. It’s harder for the characters to go on supply runs, hunt, or even bury their dead (my lips are sealed, so don’t ask)

Vivian’s group is surviving inside of their gated community. A few are taking the losses from the other books in the series exceptionally hard.

Hadley and Jon become contributing members of the community that took them in. There’s plenty of work for them to do, everything from clearing the streets to cafeteria duty.

If you’ve loved these characters all along like I have, you’ll continue to do so. You might even come to like Angus!

The last couple of chapters are tense, but it ends optimistically.

As always, this world is well written and well thought out. It really makes you think about how you would cope and survive in the situation. I’m excited to read the next one!

I really enjoyed the change of pace with this book - more about survival basics and dealing with wintertime than zombies. Not that there isn't action or suspense, but it's a slightly different kind.

Parv and Brady continue to be my fave characters, even though I know I shouldn't have any faves what with how often people get killed off in this series. I think part of it is that, at least currently, they're both very different from the other characters in the main group.

The ending felt kind of abrupt and oddly-timed to me, but then again this series always has slightly abrupt, cliffhangery endings.

Another solid and well-balanced installment in the series with characters continuing to develop and dealing with their struggles as a little zompoc 'family'. There are good times and bad; surprises and heart break. While the group was fractured with Jon and Hadley (Ginny) being separated, it was an effective way to grapple with Hope Springs. Even though there is character development, plot progression and action, I couldn't help but feel that this book was effectively the calm before the storm. I can see a road trip to Atlanta might be on the cards (or made not??) - I'll just have to wait until I get to the next book.

Surviving a zombie apocalypse is hard, but through in a rough winter and survival is just made more difficult. Deep snow makes obtaining supplies and food extremely hard. Jon and Hadley become thriving members of the new community that they become part of after getting separated from the rest of the group. This book deals with the harsh reality of just surviving every day and trying to make some sort of "normal" in the craziness of the zombie apocalypse. The realities are bleak, but the book end on an optimistic note.

So this entry in the series was a little bit harder for me to get through, at first, I was not happy that there were points of view from John and Hadley.
I found neither one of their characters very interesting previously, but I have to admit, as the story progressed my opinion turned around.
I still find Vivian terribly annoying most of the time, but the overall writing in the arc of the storyline have kept my attention, and I’ve enjoyed the series so far.
I will move onto the next . And the narration in the series is just excellent, very well done.

The full review can be found under book 1 of the Broken World Series by Kate L. Mary.

Although the first 4 books in this series were great zombie entertainment, the last 2 books lacked. And it felt like it was only with the goal ahead to start a new series, the twisted world Series.

To live side by side through four books with characters to get such a sloppy and unsatisfied ending, was not a good experience.

Fantastic series

I have been reading this series and loving it. Excellent three dimensional character and world building. When she changes character POV their dialect changes which brings a realism and smoothly moves the story along. This is one of the best postpoc stories I have read, and that is my current genre of interest, so I have read many. I highly recommend both this series and this author.

New World

This is a fantastic apocalyptic series. You get to read about everything from the beginning into everyday concerns that you might not have thought of. This fifth book has a slightly more mellow ending than the previous ones, but still keeps your interest on getting book six and quickly continuing with the story.

I have really enjoyed this series and New World has kicked it up a notch. The survivors continues to struggle with acquiring supplies and ensuring their safety. All while the interpersonal conflicts and opposing viewpoints threaten to split up the group.I'm loving the newest member Brady and am quite curious about his story.

Devastated

This series could have been so much better with a little hope. Is that what it takes to write a zombie apocalypse book? I sure hope not. I want to rate this book lower but I couldn’t put it down. I have to get the author her due. Love those country boys including Angus. Smh
