While the day belongs to humans, the night belongs to yokai, supernatural creatures that thrive on human fear. Caught between these worlds is Rikuo Nura. He's three-quarters human, but his grandfather is none other than Nurarihyon, the supreme commander of the Nura clan, a powerful yokai consortium. So, Rikuo is an ordinary teenager three quarters of the time, until his yokai blood awakens. Then Rikuo transforms into the future leader of the Nura clan, leading a hundred demons.
As Rikuo trains to increase his Fear, his true yokai power, the human yokai hunter, Kubinashi, goes on a rampage to kill the yokai of Kyoto. Kubinashi is attacked and kept at bay by the yokai Ibaraki-Doji who has a shocking weapon—the Devil’s Drum, a deadly attack with a dark secret to its range of power!
Woohoo! At long last, the moment I've been eagerly anticipating happens in Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Vol. 12: Devil's Drum as Gyuki finally joins the action.
This volume is probably one of the best volumes in the series thus far. The stronger the enemy gets, the more intense the volume is because the Nura clan serves up some major ass-kicking. I love how Zen is unshakably loyal to Rikuo. His undying loyalty makes me fear that something bad may happen to him because he's so damn lovable. The good guy always gets it first. Let's cross our fingers nothing happens! I'm also really enjoying the flashbacks of Rikuo's father. I cannot wait to unravel the mystery of his death.
The cliffhanger ending fills me with anxiety. Will Kejoro be okay? I love how Yura consistently swoops in to save the day. Hidemoto as her shikigami couldn't be a more perfect match. I can't wait for the next volume to see the new stronger Rikuo and to also see what Yura has up her sleeve.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

My Thoughts:
Apparently, I originally was updating v.13, thinking it was this one even though I was reading this one. Oops!
This was an interesting volume, though. Rikuo is being trained by Gyuki so that he can fight Tsuchigumo and rescue Tsurara. Meanwhile, Kubinashi is feeling like a failure and goes to each seal site killing the Kyoto yokai he finds there. Hagoromo-Gitsune has made it to the site of the first seal and is preparing to herself to give birth to Nue. In order to do so, she sends the yokai under her command to collect ten thousand human livers for her and they set out.
They don't expect to run into Kubinashi, though. He's reverting to his original nature of a yokai hunter. At least because of what he's doing, it makes it easier for Yura and Hidemoto to replace the seals. Eventually, though, he runs into Ibaraki-Doji and it's only thanks to Kejoro that he doesn't bite the dust right away. We get to see a bit of their past as well as how they met the Second, Rikuo's father.
Just when they're both about to get killed after Ibaraki-Doji's true nature is revealed and Kidomaru show up, Yura and Hidemoto drop a seal on the place. It looks like an even bigger fight is about to start!
After a dozen volumes this manga continues to deliver! Continuing where we left off from the last volume, Kubinashi becomes the main character for this volume and we continue to learn more about him as a yokai and his long past. Kejoro, one of my favourite minor characters, also comes out from the background to play a major part and the action/battle scenes were very satisfying for me (even though they are not my favourite part of shounen). The overall plot of reclaiming the next Seal continues and the volume ends on a tragic and intense note.
