Chasing Bygones: A Contemporary Romance Novel

Rate this book
Dr Ian Nathaniel Cole considers everyone universally repairable. With a little bit of push and a lot bit of support. Even when he gets his heart broken and scattered at his feet, optimism is the last thing holding him together. But when he stumbles upon a beautiful young lady—namely, his new patient—Ian is troubled by the inappropriate thoughts clouding his mind, and the unprofessional urge to console her in any ways possible.

Maeve Adams holds secrets she doesn't fancy talking about. A past she is more than ready to move on from. With no plans for a future, she walks straight into a men's bar and wakes up to the only pleasant part of her troubled history; Ian. Her biggest secret, wildest fantasy—her Ex-husband's best friend.

He can't lose his control around her. She can't let him know about their shared past.

When unexpected sparks ignite and new desires bloom, fighting against the obvious attraction might be more difficult than expected.

But what will happen when the one truth which can make or break them is revealed?

Hearts will crush.

Secrets will unravel.

And bygones will no longer be bygones.

She's her, she's you and she's everyone who's read their first novel and thought, "Another one."
She's young and she's ancient and she's stuck somewhere between rusty pages of a classic hardbound, suffering ink-induced hangovers, chasing broken fairytales.
She's lived a hundred lives and survived a thousand years in these books, raving about true love and beautifully damaged people.
She's probably somewhere out there right now, writing another story for someone who deserves to read it.
"The next one[book] will be better," is her favorite tagline.

So still debating the final exact rating I’d give this book but leaning towards a 3.8 ✨

As someone who has struggled with a lot of what Maeve has mentally, it was really easy to connect with Maeve’s personality and overall character. I loved her backstory because it made me want to keep learning about her and who she really is. I love how confident I saw her become through out the book, and those little short moments of happy Maeve.

The side characters aka, Michael, Chloe, and Niall made this story so much more fun. They had their own little story that you can see in this book BUT I NEED MORE OF THEM AKA I NEED THEIR OWN BOOKS PLEASE! I’ve never been so invested in side characters. A lot of the events or moments I was shocked in this book was because of these characters. They are all just so interesting I love it.

Lastly, lovely Ian. He screams THE BOOK BOYFRIEND. He’s charming, very much dominant, but also so so caring. The fact that he was a psychiatrist just made this book so much better but that’s where I found a small problem. I just thought Ian lost a bit of professionalism and privacy he should have maintained especially if you’re a psychiatrist. The book represented him as a bit unprofessional but I do understand because he’s a doctor and it’s a doctor x patient story. Ian and Maeve are just such good foils that are perfect for eachother!

If you get the chance, please give this book a try! I promise it won’t disappoint :)

3.5 stars! ARC read

I actually really enjoyed this one and think it’s a great debut novel. I loved the fmc, Maeve! I think she’s an incredible main character with a great story to tell. I also love the mmc, Ian and was constantly swooning over that man! They make such a great pair & I loved the slow burn. I haven’t read any other books like this one but really didn’t mind the dr x patient situation. I think his career is great for their relationship actually. I also LOVE chloe & niall, i think their characters should get their own books lol

I think it’s so great that the author is including mental health reps in here. I also love how we see all Maeve has been through but how she has overcome it. I think the reason I decided not to rank higher was because of a situation that happens in both of their pasts, I felt it was kind of overlooked a little too much in the end, especially because both parties were involved.

If you are looking to read this one, I would say give it a shot! It’s definitely easy and quick to get through. It’s spicy too!!

Please take into consideration that there are heavier topics in this books when you read, I wasn’t exactly expecting them when I read it but I do appreciate that the author is bringing them to light!

4/5.
ARC read.

I loved this book. Especially the mmc like his character was so mature and loved how he used to treat fmc. Fmc went through a lot but I loved how Ian helped her and see herself in a new light.

The mmc is such a gentleman but he has a dirty mouth and don't we all love these kind of heros. Honestly Ian is such a swoon worthy character 🤍. He literally gave me butterflies 🦋. .

I have never read this kind of book before and I have to say this raised my standards a little more than it already is😂.

If you're looking for an doctor ×patient ,slow burn then you should definitely give this book a try ,you won't be disappointed at all.

The author bought light to some really good topic and that made the book more awesome 💗.

Well I'm always up for slow burn and grumpy / sunshine romance. Well more like it was a softie / introvert story where the male mc was softie. Like he cried everytime where he needs to show his emotions. HE CRIED GIRLS.

The best scene for me is the masquerade ball where Ian grabs Meave from the dance floor to upstairs. I loved that part.

I didn’t expected the twist. I thought Ian had e memory loss at first the. Everything came together..

It's worth reading..

It was totally a five star read for me. The tropes and plot is really good. Give it a try if you are into gorgeous considerate psychiatrists😉

Foiled by the hype yet again. The bookstagram/good reviews on this gave me somewhat big expectations for this and they all came crashing down.

I have a few issues with this novel, and I'll try and summarize it in a coherent way because I will be honest, I found it also kind of boring and I zoned out a few times while reading this.

a. FMC/MMC both hint of a "troubled" past that I feel was not explained/explored in a good way in this book. They both have conversations/inner monologues that hint at their past and how this affects them but,
- ok the FMC had a bit of a past but it was explained in like very few brushstrokes and still left somewhat confusing.
- the MMC is a psychiatrist which, BTW, seems to be a terrible one at that. Apparently, also, he gets away with a lot of things because of his pretty face? Literally the first chapter he goes on and on about how people wouldn't even punch him in the face in fights because he is so pretty LMAO OK then. His past wasn't much of a "past" at all. He gets cheated on (this is on blurb) but like, he gets cheated on like on chapter one or two or something and sometimes the dialogue he had with his mom made it seem like it was ages ago. Also as a side note he moved on MIGHTY fast from the girlfriend he said he loved in chapter one. So super flaky pretty boy psychiatrist doesn't get props from me.
So overall the "backstory" was poorly thought out OR executed, OR BOTH to be quite honest.

Also you have insta love/insta lust at the very least on both their parts. They become obsessed with each other very fast and to me there was no reason for this whatsoever expect attraction. Their relationship is also very surface level and I can respect a insta-lust story if you use that insta lust to build the relationship after but literally the only thing they seem to connect on is how attracted they are to each other.

He has a real HERO complex and does things that I think were meant to be romantic but were controlling in the grand scheme of things. She was meant to be a badass but she was very damsel in distress vibes disguising as badass vibes.

The side characters as well like, what was the point of them really? Michael I get his existence (but not his personality lol, but the MMC siblings are there so more people exist in the story I guess. Also EDDIE???!! What is that random kid.

I'm getting on a tangent here because my brain keeps reminding me of like: oh yeah remember this random bit? lol and I can't form coherent thoughts.

Bottom line is: They are underwritten characters (I believe they have a good back story but it is just extremely poorly put in book form), with no believable romance/chemistry, no real good reason to be together OR NOT, the writing felt sluggish and overwrought and the sex scenes did not make up for it.

The first book I picked up on Wattpad after so long!

And it was quite worth it.

Maeve and Ian are really good together and the story built up their romance and eventual relationship pretty well. The undercurrent of something dark and dangerous, hidden inside the pieces of past and perhaps forgotten by Ian, is what binds them together even today.

However, the unravelling of what really was it that drew Ian to Maeve and why she always felt so familiar despite apparently never having met her, seemed quite anti-climactic to me. The entire point of conflict was raised and resolved a little too soon for my preference.

I believe the story could have been more fleshed out and include more details about the past and the present. For example,

All in all, the story was quite engrossing, albeit a bit rushed towards the end. Worth the time definitely.

ARC REVIEW

this book follows dr. ian who is a psychiatrist along with maeve, who is a patient of his. throughout the book, you could just sense the heavy tension because although it is clear that they are attracted to one another, ian fights back his temptation as she is not only his patient, but his best friend’s ex wife.

although it was difficult to get through in the beginning of the book, i genuinely enjoyed watching the two main characters get to know each other. additionally, i appreciated how the author was able to bring up topics that tend to by shied away from. although they are real and serious problems, the author was able to bring it to light in a way that was not too heavy and instead added onto the development of the characters. i enjoyed seeing how the characters were able to open up and be vulnerable towards each other because you can see just how raw their emotions are.

the characters themselves were so lovable, and it was clear how much they cared for each other. i enjoyed reading the development of Maeve’s character as she paved her way through her hardships. it wasn’t easy, but she’s strong and incredibly admirable. Ian himself was a swoon worthy character (although sometimes the things he says are a bit much)
