The Shadow Wife

As usual this author has not disappointed me. I don't know how she does it but all her books are unputdownable. Easy five starts.

I thought this was such a captivating story, it really drew me in and kept me turning the pages to find out what could possibly happen next. I honestly didn’t see the story turning out the way it did and I think that’s part of why I enjoyed it so much. There was one reveal that was just so unexpected, it quite literally left my jaw hanging. The only thing that took away from my enjoyment of this story was Liam. I thought he was a class A jerk and he drove me nuts the whole story!

I absolutely love the way that Diane Chamberlain often presents things that most people would be horrified or disgusted by (infidelity, murder, other illegal activities) and makes the characters so darn likeable that you can't help but not care about whatever bad decisions they make and fall in love with the story and understand them.
And this speaks true for Cypress Point. The novel was so beautifully told and intrinsically heartwarming that I could not put it down and even woke up much too early this morning because I needed to finish the story before I could complete my day. Absolutely beautiful story, leaving that little heart touch on your soul afterwards.

I thought I lost this book today while I was at my dentist appointment and when I got home I realised it was not in my bag and I was sooooooooo happy........ yeah this is great! can start reading something I really want to read now as have been reading this novel for over a week and it is only 378 pages long, but the book turned up much to my dismay and I just had to finish it for once and for all.
Ok so obviously this was not the book for me and its time I leaned to stick with what I like. I really loved the The Lost Daughter also by Diane Chamberlain but have read a couple of other books by this author since and they did not float my boat.
This for me was a very bland novel and as I was reading it I felt my mind wandering and it just did nothing for me. The characters were very bland and I felt they were not fully developed. I thought the story a little far fetched and could not relate to it. I really found it difficult to sustain interest in this novel and that is the reason for my 2 star rating.

I couldn’t put this book down and Diane has such an easy to read style and expertly sets up cliff hangers at the end of each chapter, that I am just compelled to keep reading into the wee hours of the night. Another book full of twists and turns, love, healing, friendship, and sisterhood. I highly recommend this book.

Vienai geriausių Džoelės draugių nutinka siaubinga nelaimė.. Gimdymo metu plyšta aneurizma. Maros smegenys yra stipriai pažeistos ir praktiškai nebelieka vilties, jog ji kada nors bus tokia, kokia buvo.
Džoelė labai gedi dėl savo draugės ir didžiausiu jos palaikytoju tampa jos draugas bei kolega Liamas. Jis puikiai supranta moters skausmą, nes Mara - jo žmona.
Visiškai neplanuotai bei netikėtai nutinka tai, jog tarp Liamo bei Džoelės užsimezga šilti jausmai. Džoelė nors ir myli Liamą, bet trokšta padėti Marai.. Jos paieškos ją priveda iki garsios gydūnės Karlinos Šaer. Pasak Džoelės tėvų vos tik jai gimusiai, Karlina išgelbėjo naujagimės gyvybę. Draskoma dvejopų jausmų, Džoelė stengiasi kaip įmanydama padėti savo geriausiai draugei.
Tikrai buvau pasiilgusi Chamberlain knygų. Jos kuriamos istorijos yra visiškai nesudėtingos, išties lengvai skaitomos bei be galo įtraukiančios. Visuomet, kai noriu psprasto, bet neprasto skaitinio imu Chamberlain ir žinau, jog nusivilti neteks.
Šį kartą "Šešėlyje" man nepasirodė kaip pati stipriausia autorės knyga, bet skaityti tikrai nebuvo nuobodu, o ir autorės paliesta tema pasirodė tikrai jautri bei gana dramatiška.
Labai patiko Karlinos personažas. Man asmeniškai jos gyvenimo linija pasirodė įdomesnė nei Džoelės. Nustebino ir autorės pasirinkimas, kuris paaiškėjo istorijos pabaigoje. Drąsiai šią knygą rekomenduočiau Chsmberlain gerbėjams. Geras laikas su knyga garantuotas 💛

Visu pirma man be galo patiko knygos viršelis. Jau toks paslaptingas ir gražus. O kai perskaičiau visą knygą, tai tikrai labai tinkamai išrinktas pavadinimas!
Pats siužetas nebuvo kažkuo labai ypatingas, bet knygos atomazga gerokai atvipino žandikaulį ir pabaiga kiek kitokesnė nei galima tikėtis. :)

This is my first read of Diane Chamberlain & what an absorbing read set in 1967 in big Sur Liam & maras life changes forever as Mara is left with a brain aneurysm leaving her in a nursing home Joelle Diangelo brings in a healer Carlynn Shire to try & help Mara recover but things change i wont spoil the ending but it was a heart wrenching read & shows one mans love for his wife who he knows will never recover read this you will fall in love with the characters as i did

Wymęczyła mnie. Ciekawy początek, zaskakujące zakończenie, ale pośrodku coś siadło. Tym razem bez zachwytów, nawet plot twisty mnie nie porwały tak bardzo, jakbym tego oczekiwała. Chciałabym, żeby książki autorki krążyły wokół innych tematów niż dzieci albo to po prostu ja tak ciągle trafiam, ale robi się to nużące...

I do like Diane Chamberlain. I know that every time I open one of her books I am going to get a page turner with characters whose lives I can get really involved in, and this is no exception.
In 1967 at a commune on Big Sur, a visiting doctor, Carlynn Shire, saved the life of a new born baby girl. Now, they are going to be reunited in a story that twists and turns with so many different angles.
Joelle is a social worker and caught between a rock and a hard place. Her oldest, dearest friend Mara is lying in a nursing home bed suffering from brain damage and Joelle herself is pregnant. The father of her baby is Liam, Mara’s husband. What a position to be in!
As Joelle’s story unfolds, Carlynn’s story is also unfolding in the background. I really enjoyed reading about Carlynn, her life and work and about her relationship with her twin sister Lisbeth as well as their loves and marriages. Their story starts in 1937 when they are seven years old and comes all the way to present times, when Carlynn and Joelle are reunited.
It is a story that will keep you turning the pages certainly and one that will ask you to believe the unbelievable. I did have a few misgivings about the twist that comes at the end of the story, but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed the read, which I believe is titled Cypress Point in USA.

Diane Chamberlain yra labai talentinga autorė, kuri rašo puikias gyvenimiškas istorijas, kuriose nagrinėja itin svarbias ir aktualias problemas. Ši, "Šešėlyje", viena iš tokių tik su šiokiu tokiu mistiškumo prieskoniu - rašytoja nusprendė panagrinėti gydūnės temą savo romane.
Nors pradžia man nepasirodė įtraukianti, tačiau perskaičius 100 puslapių, susipažinus su veikėjais ir istorija, man ėmė vis labiau patikti. Taip pat labai patiko, kad ir pasakojama keliomis laiko juostomis, nors pats pagrindas buvo dvi. Visos įdomios, neišskirčiau nė vienos, kad kuri būtų buvus nuobodesnė. Patys veikėjai iš esmės irgi puikiai sukurti nors Liamo personažas link kūrinio pabaigos šiek tiek ėmė erzinti dėl savo baimės apsispręsti ir prisiimti atsakomybę viešai.
Esu maloniai nustebusi, kad autorei puikiai pavyko nustebinti su kūrinio pabaiga - šito nesitikėjau, tačiau viskas galiausiai puikiai susidėliojo.

I am a huge fan of Diane Chamberlain as trying to get to all her older books. Loved this book, as Diane has a way of bringing a number of different stories into her novels, connecting characters, and moving back and forth seamlessly between generations and times, filling in the blanks, and always some exciting twists and turns, making it difficult to put it down. I loved the setting, the characters, and the way she tied similar circumstances between (Joelle/Liam/Mara) and (Lisbeth/Gabriel/Carlynn). There was a lot of love in this book and as some of the reviews referenced, even though the characters do bad things sometimes which are unethical, you fall in love with them anyway despite their faults and sympathize with their circumstances! A beautiful story!

A really different story than I expected. The sadness permeating the story was really strong. There were times I really wanted the characters to have some fun light moments. Overall a story with depth. Enjoyable. As usual, Chamberlain writes well and offers a great read.

Who reads this kind of crap? At least I know who writes it so I never have to waste my reading time again.
The prologue describes, in all its ghastly glory, a messy hippy home birthing scene which results in the death of the child and the brain damage in the mother. But, miraculously, an unknown women walks in from the mist and blows air onto the child's face, reviving it back to life (nothing is done for the mother, btw). Ready for more?
Chapter one takes place some 30 years later and the first scene describes some woman's menstrual cramps and irregular monthly bleeding in the same type of gruesome detail.
Maybe sharing these bodily functions is part of some kind of 'woman bonding ritual' that I have missed at 'finishing school', but I would rather not be subjected to these descriptions.
And I was done. What a relief!

Not for me. I have a feeling I'd like other books by this author but this was just okay. I liked the theme of the brain damaged wife, the dutiful friend and husband but I wasn't keen on the healing bit and felt very short changed by the way the ending - supposed twist - was introduced. I don't want to spoil it but why on earth would she agree to that?? For money for something that depended on the person who was no longer there? No - it didn't work for me. I didn't get emotionally invested in the characters - I did with Joelle but she was the only one I liked. Liam I came to despise. But it was well crafted and well written and as I say - I'd try another by this author.

I want to preface my review with saying I typically really love novels by this author. But this one...I HATED. I disliked it within the first 20 pages but wanted to see how it ended. It didn’t get any better.
The characters were shallow, the author made such a big deal about one character’s weight that it was uncomfortable, and the ending was too fairy tale and feel good for me.
Bleh. I’m glad I have a big stack of library books - hopefully it pulls me out of my reading slump I’m in.

I was totally invested in both the storylines and she did a fantastic job going back and forth. I highly recommend this one!

I always like her books. I've read they call the author the Jodi Picoult of the South, but I don't agree. She is very readable and very much her own author.

I always like Diane Chamberlain’s stories. This was unusual in that it involved someone who could heal with her mind. Don’t see that everyday.
There are two timelines. The story of the healer and her twin back in the 60s. And we know early on that one twin died very close to the time the healer saved a baby’s life.
The other story is that of the grown up baby. Her best friend has an aneurism during childbirth and is in a nursing home with severe brain damage. Joelle and her friend’s husband get very close while grieving together. Too close. She gets pregnant but doesn’t want to tell Liam. Rather, she wants the healer who saved her to try to heal her friend and Liam’s wife.
I enjoyed both stories. I had an early-on suspicion that proved correct. I have to say that the “twist’ bugged me bc I can’t imagine anyone would really do what they did.
Still, it was a good story.

Įtraukianti, įdomi, ir šiek tiek mistiška istorija. Autorė vis palaiko savo stilių, paliesdama daug jautrių temų. Ligoninė, ir jos socialiniai darbuotojai. Laimė, ir netektys. Meilė, ir metai, kurie baigiasi, kurimas naujų santykių. Pradžiai pasirodė, kad gali būti meilės trikampis, bet nieko panašaus. Taip pat labai patiko Karlainos gyvenimo linija, ir istorija, su dvynę seserimi ir gydunės galia. Pabaigoje autorės sprendimas taip viską gražiai sudėlioti, ir užbaigti labai patiko, nes šiek tiek kirbėjo, kad čia gali būti nemažai liūdesio.

I am reading more and more books by this author, many of which I had already owned and have been scattered in differnt places in my house. While I didn`t enjoy this one as much as `Midwife`s confession`that I had just previously read, I did still enjoy it.
Diane Chamberlain`s books are packed with emotion and bring the reader into that. There`s often deception, secrets, and stories behind the original storyline. I found myself liking the main characters and while I am not always fond of the jumping back and forth from present to past and back, it was easy to follow and I liked it in this case where going to the past answered questions and clarified why things were the way they were. Anyone who hasn`t read books by this author should give her a try. So far I have not been disappointed.

Dar viena gera Dianos knyga. Tikrai įdomus ir lengvai skaitomas siužetas, įkvėptas šiek tiek magijos ir susimaišęs su tikėjimu ir mokslu (lyg vienas kitą papildantis)
Man asmeniškai knygos pavadinimas netinkamai išverstas ir pritaikytas, nes supranti kad visa kas knygoje vyko tikrai nebuvo šešėlyje.
Pabaiga švelniai nustebina ir užvertus paskutinį puslapį, širdyje, knyga palieka šiltą jausmą.

This was a really heartwarming and intriging book. Interesting concept with real life characters

I love this author, but not so much this book. The story started strong, I thought I would love it, but it fell short for me. To many unbelievable story lines.
