Doll making is a craft which has been around almost as long as humans themselves. It is often seen as a traditional craft, but in recent years it has also become a popular pastime for younger, creative crafters. Many doll makers are now looking to create fashionable, contemporary dolls instead of the more traditional designs. This title shows how ten top doll designs use the same original pattern to create ten completely different dolls, each using a variety of different techniques and materials. Each doll has easy-to-follow, clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations.
The book contains patterns for 3 dolls and accessories. The pattern pieces are designed so that you can mix and match body parts.
This book also teaches techniques that can be applied to any cloth doll. My favourite part is the Gallery section at the end of each chapter. Seeing all the different way people made dolls using the same pattern and techniques was inspiring.
Patti Culea is one of the premier dollmakers alive today. Her work is immediately recognizable for its vibrancy, creativity, and bright, vivid colors. This book is a great source of information on using techniques like dying the doll's "skin" and clothes, plus lots of other things. I highly recommend it.
The explanation on dying and the use of fabric stabilizers really helps this book to stand out. The patterns are a little abstract for my taste, but this is a great book to start dabbling with art dolls.
