Ordinary 16 year old Deanna Lansford was prepared for another boring summer with her parents on Leech Lake, but things soon changed when she met Eric Matthews. Her life revolved around reading paranormal romances, but never did she dream of actually meeting a wolf shape shifter, and not to mention one so hot.Deann knows she must keep Eric's secret from her parents, but she soon discovers a secret of her own that may cost Eric his life.
Deanna Lansford is your average 16 year old, she isn’t crazy about the way she looks, and she isn’t crazy about moving to the small town of Twin Harbor Michigan, basically your typical teenager. She is happy that she will have the same summer vacation she always has had, a week camping at Leech Lake with her parents where her father will spend the time fishing with his buddies and her mother meeting with the women and cooking. She is hoping she will even meet up with some of her old friends from the previous year. This year’s starts out with promise, Deanna and her family get settled in camp where they meet the new park ranger Bill Matthews, who warns them to be careful there seem to be some wild animals on the trails. Things go along as normal until Deanna runs into a good looking boy named Eric at the post office and odd events start to happen. This will turn out to be the most not typical summer Deanna has ever had.
This is a well written little novella with an interesting cast of characters and one or two little twists. Deanna isn’t that different than most 16 years old, wants to meet a cute guy, have good friends and not be too embarrassed by her parents. Eric is the hunky boy that all girls hope they run into when they are teenagers, strong, self assured, kind and funny and seems to like Deanna. What more could any teenage girl ask for. Turns out Eric has a secret, he is a wolf shape shifter. Deanna has what you would think would be your typical reaction when she finds this out; she runs the other way (wouldn’t you?). There are some good supporting characters, Deanna’s friend Jenny Blankenship and bad boy Cliff Taylor.
While I enjoyed this book I would have liked it to have been fleshed out a little more. I was almost a short story instead of a novella; I would have enjoyed a little more back-story into the supporting characters. I felt like the purpose of the book was strictly as a set up for the next one, while not a bad thing I felt a little cheated. I’ve read the second book and I think the two could have been combined into one decent length book and been more satisfying. There is a decent little mystery going on, which is not solved in this book and some good dialogue to be had. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sweet summer romance with a slight twist.
Merged review:
Hunter’s Dawn is book 2 of the Harbor Moon Series, and takes up where Harbor Moon: Summer Romance left off, with Deanna and Eric now dating each other and beginning the first day of school.
Deanna is still struggling with the fact that she is dating a shape shifter, and is a hunter who will come into her powers on her 17th birthday, at which time she will want to kill Eric. To complicate matters, there is a brutal killing that looks like a wild animal attack, and Deanna suspects Eric might have gone wild and committed it. Deanna and Eric must learn to deal with the new feelings they have for each and try to solve the murder at the same time. Will their young love survive and can Deanna overcome her legacy as a Hunter and not do harm to Eric?
This is a short, well written, novella packed with mystery and young romance. Deanna is your typical 16 year old, dealing with her first love and the feelings that go along with it. The scenes between her and Eric are written with humor and just the right amount of teenage hormones. Eric is mature for a 17 year old, strong, confident, and determined to do the right thing. Secondary characters from the first book reappear including the mysterious Dr. McCoy and bully Cliff Taylor. Eric’s family background is fleshed out more in this book, and the relationship between Hunters and Shifters is explored more in depth.
This was a quick book to read and kept me engaged and interested throughout the whole story. I enjoyed the playfulness between Deanna and Eric with his constant teasing about her clumsiness. In some books of this genre, when the heroine discovers the existence of the paranormal she just accepts it and goes with it. Deanna struggles with the whole concept of herself as a hunter and Eric as a shape shifter. Deanna’s questions and issues made the book a more enjoyable read and helped move the story along at a good pace.

I did find a few editing errors, but not enough to cause any problems. There were a few plot holes that caused me to scratch my head and go back to read a few passages again because I thought I had missed something. I also had a little issue with the way Deanna’s parents reacted to her relationship with Eric; they seemed a little relaxed about the whole thing. There is a small amount of violence and some heavy breathing but nothing too graphic. All in all, this was an enjoyable afternoon diversion and I would recommend it to any young reader who enjoys the paranormal genre and romance.

Deena Lansford is 16 years old..Every year she and her family spend their vacation camping at Leech Lake. This year was no exception. The only change will be, after this vacation is over, will be a move to Twin Harbors. Michigan. It is a small town population 3287 where her father took a surgical position at Lakeview Hospital . Deena’s father lived for fishing and catching THE BIG ONE. What made it fun, was a neighboring family had a daughter , Jennifer, who she saw every summer as well..
Bill Matthews, the new Park Ranger, came to introduce himself and warn the family to be aware that there were wolf and bear sightings in the area.. When Deena decided to go to the local grocery store-/post office she ran into a brick wall leaving the store. He was over 6 feet tall of hot, hot Eric. By the way he teased her she was amazed that he was flirting with her. Deena never saw herself as anything other than average, never feeling she was anything special...
During the July 4th celebration at the campsite, Jennifer went off with one of the twin teenage boys Jeff Taylor. His brother Cliff grabbed Deena’s cell phone and would not give it back and was pawing at her for a kiss. Before she knew it, Eric was pulling him off her....They started looking differently at each other.
Deena started having these really weird dreams about chasing a wolf. She blew it off, because of the reported sightings. Eric noticed a charm she wore on a silver bracelet as they took a walk the next day, She confided she received it for her 16th Birthday and did not know where it came from. She also confided she was adopted and did not know her heritage. He dropped the subject, but then stopped , listened, and then shouted for her to run. Unfortunately she turned around, saw the bear coming to the clearing, saw Eric run towards the bear, and then shifting into a wolf...
I will not go any further to leave any spoilers. What a great start to a new series...There is so many options this author can take this storyline. Bravo Traci Mitchell

I'm still on my kick with reading (mostly free) e-books on my Kindle Fire, which is how I found SUMMER ROMANCE by Traci Michell. Seeing that it was a YA paranormal romance, I decided to give it a shot -- especially since that's the genre I was most frequently reading in the actual, paper books I pick up lately.
So, Deanna is a fan of paranormal romances. She reads about vampires and werewolves, swooning over their charm and wishing she could have a mythical hero of her own, but of course vampires and werewolves aren't real, right? But then Deanna meets Eric, she finds out that some of her favorite paranormal romances aren't as fictional as she once believed. As teen love blossoms, Deanna uncovers a dark secret about herself that might extinguish her new summer romance before it really gets hot.
Honestly, SUMMER ROMANCE wasn't a bad read -- but it wasn't anything original either. The story was pretty formulaic, featuring a teen girl who discovers an unusual power/destiny for herself, and of course there's the beautiful teenage hunk who turns out to be her paranormal love interest. The relationship is destined for doom, and everything is left open for the second book in the series (but sorry, I don't know the name of that one yet -- I'm lazy).
I just had the feeling of, oh, haven't I read this one before? But I haven't, right? I don't think so, at least..
I think I'd save this one for the most avid YA paranormal romance reader -- the one who has read everything else the genre has to offer (which, woah, is a LOT of books, no?) and just needs one more short read while waiting for something better to be released. Otherwise, just save your time and read Twilight.
Review by Valerie: This author has a really easy writing style that I enjoyed reading. My main problem was that the “books” are so short (at nineteen pages each). It would be nice for Mitchell to develop the characters and setting more in depth.
Without spoiling either “book” for you, I can tell you that the stories involve werewolves, shapeshifters, hunters, and the battle between good and evil (while trying to be normal teens going to school and having a life). While book one introduces us to the characters and how they meet, book two gives us a good idea of Deanna’s internal turmoil regarding her transformation to a Hunter, as well as Eric’s apprehension to become involved with someone he considers an enemy. Book three will be the final installment and is titled, Harbor Moon: Dark Reunions.
Quote: “The last two weeks of my life had been an incredible change, mixed with enlightened revelation on all our behalves. It turned out Eric and his Dad had been wrong about some of the Hunters.” Page 17
