I have read several of Ms. Brunstetter's books and at this point I believe I am done.
I think my first problem is that any book that has the death of a child needs some kind of warning. If I had any clue I wouldn't have even started the book.
My other biggest problem is how wordly her Amsih are always portrayed. We live not far from an Amish community and visited often when I was young. I have never seen Amish eat out as much as the ones in her books do. In fact in all my years I've only ever seen one Amish family in a local restaurant.
The change in the characters are also unbelievable. Don't get my wrong - people can chane, but I don't think it can happen in one conversation. A change of heart yes and a trying to make different choices, but after one conversation this writter often has a character never have to face their problems again...unrealistic.

After the death of her husband and the loss of her job, Lydia King moves to Charm, Ohio to help her mother care for her ailing grandfather. Along the way Lydia meets with happiness, tragedy, and two suitors who want to court her. I enjoyed this story of love, loss, and new beginnings set in the Amish community of Charm, Ohio.

After her husband's death, Lydia King and her young son move to Charm, Ohio to help her mother take care of her grandfather. Lydia is not sure if she is ready for love again, but she can't help noticing two men: Menno Troyer, a widower with four young sons, and Levi Stutzman, the only one in his family who is not a dwarf, devoted to his family, and afraid to marry in case he passes the dwarfism gene onto his children. Someone is leaving gifts for Lydia and her mother at the times they need them the most and Lydia is trying to find out who it is. Before she can, tragedy strikes again, and Lydia wonders if her heart will ever heal enough for her to love again.
"Lydia's Charm" is a nicely done, if at times achingly heartbreaking, novel set in the Amish community. Author Wanda E. Brunstetter has created several memorable and realistic characters, starting with Lydia herself, who has to start her life over again several times, struggling to please her mother, suffering more than one devastating loss, and has to make a major decision regarding her future. Her mother Mae has struggled her whole life to please her father and realizes almost too late how that not only hurt Lydia, but her own happiness. Menno Troyer still mourns the loss of his wife but is willing to do what is best for his children - but does he really know what is best? Finally, Levi Stutzman often sacrifices his own needs to take care of his family and is finally realizing he needs to have his own happy life. All of these people have deep storylines, and it is interesting to watch each character grow. Although the book has several very sad moments (as in put down the book and grab a tissue) there are also some happy moments, particularly for Lydia and her mother. I loved the relationship between the Stuzman's - they are a genuinely caring family. Included in the book are some discussion questions and a few recipes. I wouldn't want to try and make it myself but I sure wish I knew someone would make Frogmore Stew so I could try it out!

Lydia King had only been married for 5yrs when her husband Jeremiah was tragically killed in a logging accident. Being the sole provider for her young son Josh, hasn't been easy and now it's just gotten worse because she lost her job, and with no family close by, her husband had moved them to Arthur Illinois from Wisconsin she wasn't sure what she was going to do.
When Lydia gets a letter from her mom, who had moved back to Charm Ohio to take care of an ailing parent, inviting Lydia to move to Charm and help her she really saw no other choice.
Lydia quickly realizes that her mom is somewhat resentful for being the caretaker of her father but really refuses any help, so Lydia realizes that the best way to help is to get a job and help with finances. She meets Menno Troyer who was recently widowed and has 4 young boys to raise. He needs a wife and thinks that Lydia might fit the bill.
Levi Stutzman and his family run the general store. Levi has decided never to marry because Levi's parents are dwarfs and he fears passing dwarfism onto any children he might have. He also feels a sense of responsibility for helping his family because he is the only one that didn't inherit dwarfism. His mom and dad have other ideas though, they manage fine on their own and want Levi to have a family of his own, and Levi's mom Nona thinks that Lydia could be the one for her son.
Will Lydia find happiness in Charm, and will she get a second chance at love, or will tragedy once again test her faith?
This is an amazing story of faith, hope and love that will keep you thinking about the characters long after you have read the last page. Mrs. Brunstetter has a way of telling Amish stories that capture your heart and imagination making you feel like you're a part of the story she is telling.

I am touched by the fact that although Lydia goes through some really hard situations she is still able to keep her chin up and go forward. I was surprised that that so many hard issues where touched on- a mother who is distant and judgemental, not really open to change. Death, relocation, motherhood, accepting people that are physically different, accepting charity, sadness that stops a person from being complete.
This book like alot of Wanda Brunstetter's is a good book to curl up and get lost in, you will not want to put it down until it is done. She leads us through a well woven story that is about a lady who is Amish, but is going through situations that any of us could be experiencing. Through it all friends, family and faith get her through.
I can only hope when I am faced with such obstacles that I rise to the occasion as well as Lydia and her positive friends.

In Lydia’s Charm, Wanda Brunstetter explores several issues. Unexpected death, tragedy, dwarfism, prejudice, and financial ruin are but a few of the problems that are faced by the protagonists of the story. It is through faith, charity, hard work, enlightenment, perseverance and understanding that they are able survive the unsurvivable. In this well written novel, you will come to know and like the characters as they struggle in their day-to-day lives to do what is right in their faith. Although they sometimes fail, they never give up trying.

Lydia’s Charm is a captivating story about faith, unconditional love, community, healing, and forgiveness. Forgiveness in each other and forgiveness in oneself. Lydia King returns to Charm, OH after losing her husband and job, but more importantly to be close to the little family that she has left. As she struggles to get along with her mother and make a home for her son, Josh who is absolutely adorable, we learn more and more about Lydia, her life, and her struggles.
I was mesmerized as I learned not only more about Lydia, but also about the Amish culture. This is a truly fascinating story as we gain a better understanding of the Amish culture and how they truly embrace their sense of community. The trials and tribulations that Lydia endures after she returns to Charm will simply rip your heart out and make you weep. But Lydia is a strong woman, who is a survivor. Despite everything that she’s lost, she’s still a caring, giving woman who is an inspiration to us all.
Lydia’s Charm by Wanda E. Brunstetter has everything: love, humor, intense drama, and a strong sense of community. Like most small communities, everyone knows your business, but there are times that pride get in the way of each of the main characters and secondary characters in the story. But, as they learn to embrace their faith and what God has in store for them, things begin to work itself out. Menno Tyler and his four rowdy sons definitely add to this scintilating story through humor and ultimately, the importance of listening to one another. Levi Stutzman and his family are absolutley amazing as they teach us that it’s okay for people to be different. More importantly, regardless of your size, there is a lot of love to go around. But the most important lesson that this reader learns in Lydia’s Charm is about believing in one’s faith. God is good and we just have to believe that he has a bigger plan for all of us even when it may not be what we originally had in mind.
Lydia’s Charm will make you laugh, cry, and at times want to scream as these characters learn how to co-exist. This mesmerimizing story of faith will bring Joy to your heart and will make you beg for more with the turn of every page. It’s obvious that Ms. Brunstetter has done her research on the Amish culture, which I found extremely intriguing. Lydia King is a recent widow and is about flat broke. She doesn't know what else to do but to move to Charm, Ohio to live with her mom and grandfather. Her mom lives with him because he is very ill, and Lydia hopes that with the move closer to her family, she can re-build her and her young son Josh's life.
But when she arrives, her mom, glad to see her kin, is harsh with Josh and demanding of Lydia. Also, there isn't much money to take care of the bills and everyday needs. Lydia applies for a job as a waitress in a local restaurant and that helps.
There are several eligible men in town but Lydia doesn't know if she will ever re-marry. But she takes a shine to the Stutzman family right away. Levi isn't handicapped by dwarfism like the rest of his family, and thinks it is is duty to take care of them. Although his family wants to him to start a family and make a life of his own, he is afraid to. But he finds Lydia very captivating.
Menno is a recent widower with four young and rowdy boys. He needs a mother for his boys desperately and thinks Lydia would make a fine wife and mother, so he sets to courting her, much to Levi's dismay. But when tragedy strikes not once, but twice close together, Lydia sinks down into a well of depression. Thankfully, Reuben is around to help out now and again. He has taken a shine to Lydia's mom, but she won't have none of it.
The community tries to take care of one another, so firewood and baskets of food seem to make their way to Lydia's doorstep. She doesn't know who, but is blessed. But her feelings for Levi deepen and her mother has a fit. She feels Menno would make a much better husband and when questioned on it, her hypocrisy comes shining through. Will Lydia find the right man to restart her life? Can she move past all of the tragedy to find love again?
Lydia's Charm is a quick look into the Amish way of life. Their devout beliefs, their way of living day to day, and the trials and tribulations that they go through. Splashes of romance, hearty recipes, heart-wrenching decisions, compelling and realistic characters, Lydia's Charm will capture your heart. Ms. Brunstetter is a superb storyteller.

I've been a fan of Brunstetter for some time now, and this is a reread for me. Lydia's Charm has been on my shelf for sometime and I loved going back and seeing the characters. The pages turned quickly for me, as I was engrossed in this beautiful story. Before I knew it, I was at the end, and wanting more.
I loved Lydia's character, along with her sweet son. They were beautifully chiseled by the talented hands of Wanda Brunstetter and really came to life with this story. As Lydia and her son moved back to be with her mom, I traveled right along with her. When she was set up by her mom to gain a new father figure for her boy, I felt her emotions like they were my own. I turned each page of Lydia's story with wonder and anticipation. I love when a book can fully envelope me like that and make me a true part of the characters lives!
This book is tender and emotional, and full of God's grace and mercy. I loved watching Lydia fall in love, I loved watching her mend her relationships with her family, and most of all, I loved how Wanda Brunstetter, once again, had me falling in love all over again with another one of her books. This author is one of my go to authors, buying her books without knowing what they are about, and I'm so glad I revisited this 5 star book! I highly recommend it!

I'm glad I read this book. Even though I thought it an easy read /romance and could project the ending, it had a few twists that I did not see coming. This book also had some good life lessons in it and I especially like the lessons on patience ! Lydia also prayed on most of her concerns and struggles and in time came up with good decisions. I was rather struck speechless when Lydia lost her son in an accident but yet again that was another life lesson, to cherish the ones we love while they are still with us. I live in Harrisburg PA, just 45 minutes from Lancaster County . Our sailboat is in North East MD and we travel route 272 through Amish Country all the time . We encounter buggies on the road, children on scooters and farmers in their fields. This book represented their way of life very well. A solid 3 star rating from me . I have one of Brunstetter's trilogies on my to read list.

A few months after they move in, tragedy strikes and makes Lydia questions everything til a secret admirer starts leaving off boxes of food and envelopes of money to help with medical bills and finances.
I was very happy with who was revealed as the secret admirer and how the book ended. I do wish this was part of a series since i'd love to see how Lydia's life would play out since than.
Can't wait to read more books by this author in the future!!

My aunt has been shopping at the christian bookstore for Christmas the past few years. This year's gift is a new Amish romance. It is...nice. A cleansing of the palate from my usual saucier fare.
In comparison to last year's Amish romance, it seemed a little Amish Light. An Amish couple in the story went to Florida for a honeymoon. They have honeymoons? Did they fly? Did they hire a driver? It seemed odd. Maybe it was because this was Ohio Amish and last year's was Pennsylvania Amish.
Perhaps I'll know more next Christmas.

I really enjoyed this book by Wanda Brunstetter. She has become one of my fav amish authors. This book had a really heart wrenching moment, i was in shock for a while lol. But it was also inspiring on how these characters leaned on God's Word and on God for comfort, and peace during their mourning periods. And of course i always love a happy ending.

Lydia moves as a widowed mother to 4 year old Josh to live with her mother and grandfather. Lydia struggles to find her way in the new city and has 2 young men interested in her. The story has a lot of loss in it but Lydia's faith carries her through the hard times

I got this book to review from NetGalley.
Lydia has been widowed for about a year and she becomes jobless so she decides to move to her with her young son to her hometown to be with her mother and grandfather.
Being young and beautiful she is quickly noticed by Menno, a furniture store owner who is also recently widowed, and who has 4 young boys that he must care for by himself. She is also noticed by Levi, who works in his family store and is the only one in his family who is not living with dwarfism.
Menno knows he needs to find a mother for his four boys, and thinks Lydia is a good choice because she is already a parent and she is more mature than many of the silly girls who live in the area that have no concept of parenthood.

I have to admit, this is my favorite Wanda E. Brunstetter book thus far. I found myself rooting for her to marry Menno, and then later Levi, and wondering if she would end up with either one.
This book definitely has periods of sadness, but it is a beautiful story of a woman trying to heal from the tragedies of life when more tragedy hits, and how her faith helps her get through.
I also think it beautifully showcases the kindness of those who live in the Amish community in Charm, Ohio. I believe that this is probably representative of how the Amish truly do come together when they have a neighbor in need.
Lastly, I like how the book was resolved, for once it didn't feel sudden and leave me with more questions than answers like Wanda E. Brunstetter's other two books I've read.
I think it's a beautiful book worth the read! Pick up Lydia's Charm today!

Being young and beautiful she is quickly noticed by Menno, a furniture store owner who is also recently widowed, and who has 4 young boys that he must care for by himself. She is also noticed by Levi, who works in his family store and is the only one in his family who is not living with dwarfism.
Menno knows he needs to find a mother for his four boys, and thinks Lydia is a good choice because she is already a parent and she is more mature than many of the silly girls who live in the area that have no concept of parenthood.

Ok, forgive me but i find that I am not enjoying anything by this author and for the present, I'm done. The writing is not unforgivable it just seems that too much happens in such a short period of time and these people go through the motions without really having any time or thought to process what is happening.
Two deaths in the body of the book as well as two recent deaths six months before the story begins. Good Lord, that seems like a bit much for one novel but of course this is part of a series I am sure. Even still, it is a bit much to digest. One of the deaths is of a small child, and while initially, we see the mother mourn tremendously, it feels like shortly thereafter she is able to just move on with life. I cannot imagine this being so, even for a woman of faith???? I don't know.j
One character has a deep prejudice which we see demonstrated again and again throughout the novel, however, after ONE event she is able to leave all of that behind. That certainly does not feel authentic to me. Especially for a woman who has felt this way for her whole adult life and a good portion of her childhood? I found the reason for her issue a little problematic for me. It seemed a little simple but maybe that is just because at the point in the book where we find out the cause of her prejudice I am a little outdone by the whole novel.
Another, Character in the novel, Levi, has a deeply held (or so we are led to believe) idea about why he should not marry but after one brief conversation with his mother he decides that he was wrong and is ready to go forward and find a wife. Whew, I'm so glad a belief in God makes decision making so easy. Here I am thinking that whole I have a belief system I still struggle. Not these people, one quick talk, one quick mention of God's will and trusting God and we are off. I could see it coming but it was still a bit too much.
There is a little "mystery" in the storyline but if you can't figure it out halfway through, I would be surprised.
I am really struggling to finish this novel I really don't care about any of these people and that makes finishing hard for me. They have hard things happen to them and move forward so easily, they have supposed deep seated issues that are dismissed with no real struggle or internal process just one even can change everything instantaneously. Too hard to swallow.
I will say that I loved Rueben and I really enjoyed Levi's mother, I did not hate this novel I just was realoly frustrated by it way too much happens to these people.

Lydia king not only lost her husband a year ago, and is raising their 4 year old son Josh alone, but her employer has just informed her that they must let her go from her job because of the bad economy. What is an Amish female widow with a young son to do; maybe move back home with an overly opinionated mother who is taking care of her father?
Menno Troyer is a widower with four rambunctious sons. He finds it hard to balance working at his woodshop, taking care of his sons, making sure they do the house chores, making any necessary repairs on the house, and making sure the boys are being properly fed. What is a man in his situation to do? Maybe he should try and find a wife?
Then there is Levi Stutzman, a young single Amish man who helps take care of his “little people” parents and siblings. He feels it is his responsibility to make sure that he is there to watch out for them and make sure that no one makes fun of his family. So will he ever really have a life and/or a family of his own?
Can Lydia find a new life filled with happiness and also the possibility of love again with one of these two men?

Lydia King dealt with many tragedies in her life, and yet she was able to bounce back and continue on. I found her to be a strong character, and I was rooting for her throughout the book.
I did like how the author handled the issue of dwarfism. She didn’t make the family victims in the book, but showed them as able bodied, hard working, and happy individuals. Did they face some prejudice from others? Yes, but they did not let that get them down.
I did however think this book moved along a little slower than some of Wanda Brunstetter’s other books. However, I still found the book worth reading.

Sometimes there are certain authors with whom you just don't connect. This is the second Wanda Brunstetter book I've read and I just didn't like it. I read White Christmas Pie and thought it was very light and fluffy, nothing special. When I saw Lydia's Charm, I figured I'd give Wanda Brunstetter another chance, because the story sounded appealing, but ultimately wasn't.
I found the characters to be one-dimensional. Menno was selfish and Lydia's mother Mae was downright horrible. The Stutzman family was wonderful, but Levi was annoying. The story was contrived and the writing very pedestrian. I only finished the book to find out if I was right about the anonymous gift giver.
I have no doubt that Wanda Brunstetter fans will love it. It has mostly 4 and 5 stars everywhere. It just wasn't for me.

I am enjoying the Amish books and this is no exception. This is the second book by this author I have read, and find it just as good as the other. Once I started reading I instantly felt for Lydia as she lost her husband a year ago and then she just recently lost her job. Her mom asked her to move to Ohio to move with her and her grandfather. Lydia's relationship with her mom is not a good one and hopes to mend it while she is there. More heartache happens, but will Lydia and her mom find happiness? A lot of things happen along the way and it is nice to see just how much the characters grow as the books goes along. I say this is a must read.

This really isn't the type of book I usually read but I wanted to stretch my horizons. Wanda E. Brunstetter is a well-known author of Amish fiction so I chose to read one of her books. She is a good writer, however, I never felt connected to any of the characters. She did not really let us in on any of the character's inner thoughts or emotions. We were simply observing the story as it happened. Normally, after a certain incident in the story (I won't spoil the plot.) I would have cried through several tissues; I didn't even get teary-eyed. By the time I was done with the book I didn't care if Lydia ever married again or not.

When mysterious gifts appear on her porch, she has no idea who the anonymous giver could be. Is Lydia ready to more forward and fall in love again? When tragedy strikes will her gift giver be there to offer support? You’ll be encouraged by Lydia’s strength and faith in God!

A heartbreaking tale about perseverance acceptance and love.
At one point I had to set this book aside and take a break. A truly emotional tale. Somethings I liked somethings I thought were not fully developed. I cannot say more without spoiling the book so I will simply say all in all I enjoyed the story.

I cried, I laughed, I held my breath for these characters, written so well into a this story.... Compassion, maybe some anger can be felt in this story as I read it and kept reading it and hoped for them to be happy...

Many of Wanda’s books are very good. There is always tragedy in her books. Some of her books are thought provoking. However, I found this book was like reading the book of Job in the Bible. What else can happen to poor Lydia? I wanted the sadness to end. Not sure what the authors point is to write a romance with so much heartache…

I love Wanda E Brunstetter so I knew it was going to be a great book! I loved all the characters and my heart was breaking for Lydia as she was going through so much tragedies a person should have to deal with. I didn't want the book to end and I hated to see that it was a stand alone novel.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. It didn't seem to portray the Amish people the way most books do. I felt it didm't set the Amish culture as unique and separate from other cultures around it as it is in reality.

This book had way to many tragedies and injuries😭 also it didn’t seem as Amish as it should’ve been.
