Illustrated in full color. Slimey, Oscar the Grouch's pet worm, plays the book worm in this delightful ode to reading. "B is for books. All kinds of books! Books about counting. Books about cooks..."
B is For Books is from the Sesame Street archives and has some of your favorite Muppets from the show, like old favorites Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie, and Herry Monster, whom I haven't seen on the show in years, and I really miss him cos he was a comforting presence in a lot of episodes. It also has the infamous Muppet Inchworm, seen here as the Book Worm who introduces kid readers to all the good stuff books can be. Humorous prose and awesome illustrations have lines like Books Have True Things, with Bert and Ernie in 18 century American Wigs signing the Declaration of Independence...(possibly for gay Muppets everywhere?) and Books about the Body, with Bert in shorts and shirtless showing off his, ahem, tastefully sexy side (so Ernie would notice, naturally!). The Muppet Bookworm is a treat to see and the Muppets are as Rockin' as ever. It's classic Street Knowledge, and in some cases it's still the best education for kids. See if they agree! Three stars Brought to you by the letter B and Dalton! (Hee hee hee!)
I'm trying to remember if there has ever been a book about books that I DIDN'T like. There probably was, but I can't remember it. Honestly, a book about the greatness of books is pretty much guaranteed to resonate with my library-infused-soul. And this one was cute. Easy to read, but with great messages about the beauty of reading, this is an easy one to recommend. I read it aloud and then the kids took turns reading it to our library dog. He seemed to like it...Can't ask for more than that!
This is most definitely a beginner book. This would be best for Pre-K to Kindergarten ideally. I like that fact that this quick little read has to focuses. First, encouraging kids to read by telling them what different books there are. This would help students see that there could be a book that seems interesting to them. It also focused, mainly, on the letter B. It connects the letter with its sound & how it relates to words. Simply putting letters to their sounds for kids to understand.
This will work well in a toddler storytime. It's also a good beginner book. The Sesame characters will appeal to children who watch the show. But note this is "old school" Sesame Street, not new Sesame Street (aka "that Elmo show"). In fact, the cover illustration of the copy I read had Big Bird holding a giant stack of books with Slimey on top. (NOT Elmo on the cover.)
I have to say that one of my favorite parts of the book is the fact that it's Slimey taking you among the books. He was always one of my favorites.
5/20/10 I've been shuffling this book around for so long trying to get it into a toddler storytime. I finally had time to work it in today. And it was all right. I think the Tue. group would have done better as they sit still better, pay attention more, and have parents who work with them more. Thu. group is often quieter and less involved. So I was losing attention (as it was the last book), and felt rushed in it since the adults wouldn't help the kids with the actions.

My Review: A good book for a beginning reader, full of simple words and the pictures hint towards the words so that there is some association for new readers. It is also a great introduction to a variety of books and will possibly help spark their interest and help in choosing a type of book that will encourage this newly learned skill. Currently Munchkin just likes pointing out his favorite Sesame Street characters but I think he will really like to read this book as he gets older.
One of my favorite things to do is stare at my parents bookshelves. I can do it for hours! I can't wait to read those books. So this book was right up my alley -- it told me all of the kinds of books, and I could dream about reading them one day. Plus, there were all my favorite Sesame Street characters and a funny worm to find on every page.
I will love this book for a very long time. Thanks Rob, Christin and Tommy!
This is on the order of a predictable book. It talks about all of the different kinds of books there are. This would bre great to use when having children write their own books, because it is full of ideas as to what they can write about. It is also a book for begining readers, so it will help build confidence in reading. I would reccomend this book for kindergarten/first grade.
This book would be a good book to assist multilingual students. This book has repetition that would be beneficial to multilingual students as well as students struggling with phonics. The pictures in the text compliment the words, therefore, students can refer to the pictures while reading the words.
It's a good book for toddlers who are just beginning to read. It's colorful and attracts one to tell what each page conveys without reading the text. My son enjoys when I read this book to him everyday.
My 4 year old is now reading this book after second time together with a little help. She is so excited and feels like she has accomplished something so big!! And she has !!! So now she wants to not only do this book again but do more phonics and stage 1 reading !!
Elmo is enough to win Micah over; but I love the content! Each book that is featured teaches something in its own pages: numbers, letters, etc. Totally Mommy-approved!
