A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

With some of the hardcore 'fanboys' unhappy with the significant update and decimation of the Avengers franchise in Avengers: Disassembled, they were even more distraught with the new New Avengers being linked to the likes of Spider-Man, Daredevil, Spider-Woman and ...Wolverine!

Back in the land of appreciators of great storytelling, the rest of us were dazzled by the start of this volume with a far more threatening incarnation of Electro, a murky and tense prison breakout at The Raft, and already compelling secrets and lies around The Sentry, S.H.I.E.L.D., an apparent traitor in the new team and some great Bendis dialogue! The downside was that the intriguing start to the volume was tarnished by it's second half play-by-play homage the original Avengers that came across as a tad manufactured and disjointed to me. 7.5 out of 12, very Strong Three Star read.

The Avengers disassembled after House of M. Spidey rogue Electro busts out a few dozen baddies out of The Raft. Avengers reassemble - who expected THAT? Oh, right, everyone. Was it remotely entertaining to see something that’s been done a zillion times before? Surprisingly nah.

New Avengers, Volume 1: Breakout is a super-generic superhero book. Brian Bendis throws a bunch of heroes and villains together in a Royal Rumble-esque brawl because that’s what you do when you haven’t got any ideas.

The reason why theys all fighting is convoluted and I already forgot it as I was reading it - it doesn’t matter anyway, it’s just to get the newly reassembled Avengers to the Savage Land because David Finch wanted to draw dinosaurs, I guess.

Unsurprisingly SHIELD are up to shady shit, again - when aren’t they? Also, Marvel’s failed, embarrassing Superman ripoff, The Sentry, makes a depressing appearance here. They really should bury that character and pretend he never was.

Bendis’ writing and Finch’s art are both competent but the end result is dull, unmemorable and by-the-numbers. Don’t bother breaking out this volume!

Well, it is a quality Marvel comic that makes for a good jumping-on points with new readers. Good art, somewhat well written, etc.

It's a new iteration of the Avengers, so that's always easier for those intimidated by too much continuity.

However, I am an old school fan and I never likes Bendis's dark style with these iconic characters... I'm still upset about his Disassembled arc years later. And the way it was simultaneously trying to be like the Justice League--with Spider-Man and Wolverine joining--yet also down to earth and edgy. It didn't work for me, but to each their own

Hangs my head in shame.
I didn't go crazy over this book.

You've got a bunch of baddies about to break out of Ryker's Island.

Spider man, Captain America, Spider girl and of course Iron Man are involved with the saving of the day. Well sorta..there are still a whole lot of baddies that get loose.
The Captain America decides that they need a new Avengers group to go after the crime dudes.

I just thought this was kinda bland. Usually I'm a superhero fangirl but I couldn't even work it up for Iron Man..and Iron Man is hawt.

The artwork was awesome though.

It's been 6 months since Avengers: Disassembled. Electro is hired to break out a prisoner on the Raft and several heroes are there by happenstance. 42 inmates escape so Cap assembles those that were at the Raft into the New Avengers. Shortly thereafter they discover some shady goings-on at Shield while in the Savage Land.

Even though it's a ridiculous reason to form a team, just "hey, you happened to be there." Bendis and Finch put together a really fun book. Bendis writes a better Spider-Man than almost anyone. Luke Cage and Spider-Woman help add to the banter. Bendis throws in some of the most popular characters (Spider-Man, Wolverine) in the Marvel Universe and it works. There's just some fantastic moments in the book too, like when The Sentry takes out Carnage or Cap talking Peter Parker into joining the Avengers.

Ranty Review

OK. I really, really, really wanted to like this more. I hadn’t read anything featuring The Avengers for ages, and Breakout received such glowing reviews. The premise also appealed to me. An Avengers team featuring the likes of Daredevil and Wolverine? Yes please!

Well, despite some name dropping and featuring Matt Murdock early in the story, Daredevil isn’t actually part of the New Avengers team (not at this stage, anyway, I don’t know what happens in future issues).

Spiderman – doesn’t really do anything except get beaten up rather badly by escaping (super) convicts early in the story.

Luke Cage – talks in shift-characters (!@#$%#!) all the time, or perhaps he’s foreign. At least he beats the spit out of the Purple man early in the story.

Wolverine – totally impotent - gets owned by both Spiderwoman and Captain America in the space of a few pages. Doesn’t maul anything. Major letdown.

Captain America – yes he was here.

Spiderwoman – meh.

Ironman - let’s see:
Rikers island escape disaster – Ironman arrives to save the day (of course, with some help by Sentry)
Savage island dinosaur attack - Ironman saves the day
Avengers team gets nabbed and bound – Ironman saves the day
Am I detecting a certain pattern here?

All of the above could have been forgiven if there was some character development…

They should have just called this “Ironman and his New Avengers – Breakout”, since the other poor schmucks are just tagging along for the ride.

Does it have promise? Sure it does: just look at that roster.

Will I read the next volume? I will, since I want to see what’s going to happen with the Sentry storyline.

Would I recommend this? Not really. Unless you absolutely luuuuuurve Ironman (like the authors apparently do).

Oh, by the way, the art is excellent.

Ah the Avengers book that got me into the Avengers back in High School.

Avengers is pretty big now. Everyone loves them. The movie changed the marvel universe and pretty much ALL superhero movies. However, back in the day, Avengers weren't a huge name. New Avengers by Bendis decided to change that. Let's get some big names in this group right? It worked for Justice League. They added Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in the 90's. Bendis took Spider-man, Wolverine, and Cap and had them all team up. Instant Success!

This storyline begins with a huge breakout. Forty Six villains escape but not before a massive fight breaks out that has our heroes Spider-man, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Cap and more fighting for their lives. The second half is going after the person responsible for the break out. In doing so we're introduced to Wolverine!

Good: It's neck-break pace, quips out the ass, and big brawls is all Bendis signature style after House of M. So it works here because all the characters feel like themselves but together, and you got to love seeing Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Spider-man all talking shit together. Also the art is great, a mix of moody atmosphere yet uplifting moments.

Bad: The 2nd half isn't nearly as engaging as the first half. While it's good introduction to Wolverine for the team it's hardly as exciting as the breakout.

Overall this is a lot of fun. Like Justice League volume 1 for New 52 this is movie style fun all over it. Big, exciting, funny, and kickass, this is sometimes what you want in superhero books. While it's not deep or epic as Avengers by Hickman I'd argue this is a much better point to start Avengers comics. It's easier to get in to and you'll really come to like character who weren't big at the time like Spider-man and Luke Cage. A 3.5 out of 5.

The original Avengers disbanded six months ago after they had the WORST day in the history of Avengers (Avengers: Disassembled). Then when a supermax prison break happened a new group of superpowered individuals (and a couple of old ones) answered the call of the moment, and just like that the New Avengers for the new era has come together. Captain America. Iron Man. Spider-Man. Wolverine. Luke Cage. Spider-Woman. (Daredevil also was there but no way in hell will he becomes an Avenger!) Cap assembles the new team and starts investigating the breakout... and naturally, nothing is what it seems, and before long all hell breaks loose.

The first volume of The New Avengers started so-so, but ended up being kinda brilliant, including some good twists and turns. The interactions between the various heroes are great, and the team itself is awesome. I mean it has frekking Spider-Man and Wolverine as Avengers! The writing is brisk and fast paced with always a couple of funny quips to keep things energetic. The plot's not too bad either, with a great finish.

Like me, anyone wants to read modern Avengers comics after loving the movies can start with Avengers Disassembled, then Secret War and then with this New Avengers series, all of which by Brian Michael Bendis. Enjoyable start of a more or less enjoyable era of modern Marvel comics (2005-2015).

Had another quick skim at this as a reminder, as I just picked up Volume 2 and did not really remember much. Three years since I read this, wow...

This is a lot of fun and has very nice artwork. Definitely worth it, if you are a fan of the Marvel Comic movies...

1st read, August 2017:

The plot interested me right from the start, I enjoyed this one quite a bit!

Liked the artwork, brilliant colours, nice fit for a story about superheroes. Good humour. Fun story, not too predictable. Definitely interested in the next installment of this series.

I loved the premise of the super-villain prison break, and the early introduction of Electro, where he asks himself, "Costume or no costume?" and answers himself in this panel: description
But I had trouble getting over the fact that the assembled team of Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, and, later, Wolverine (also possibly Daredevil in the future?), while both interesting in some cases and popular in others, is not well balanced as a superhero group from a tactical standpoint, first and foremost as most of them cannot fly. So this entire comic does seem like a bit of fanboy service as opposed to a sensible answer to the disbanding of the actual Avengers.

That said, I'll still read onto the next one, The New Avengers, Vol. 2: Sentry, just to see how the group evolves and how they resolve the Sentry plot-line.

I didn't remember having this hard a time with the art when I read this the first time. Granted, I've never been a big fan of Finch's art but looking back at this book, holy crap did Jessica Drew deserve better.

To start with, Bendis writes his characters using phrases that seem really odd for them. It just seemed weird for Logan to say the Savage Land was "silly" with mutates. It also struck me as odd for Jessica Drew to use the phrase "Honor among fuckers". In some ways, Bendis writes swearing 12 year olds would say. You know, when they're not used to using the words properly. And correct me if I'm wrong but I was sure Spider-Woman was a brit?

Things I liked?
- I loved watching the team come together. I love Steve trying to convince Tony to start the team up again, all the while Tony had a Tower ready made to house a team and a quinjet. I love their chemistry and their complicated past. Interesting that Cap blamed Tony for the Avengers breaking up after Avengers Disassembled.
- I loved seeing some of the camaraderie between the characters.

Things I didn't care for?
- Finch's art has never really been my cup of tea. I'm not sure if it was his idea or Bendis' to feature a Spider-Woman drawn in a suit tight enough to see every single crevice of her body. But I'm sure Finch had no say in how many times Bendis chose to reference it. Did we need a moment when she comes out in costume and all the men talk about her body? We didn't get that for Cap or Peter and they're suits are also pretty damn form fitting. *Sighs*
- the team is introduced to Yelena Belova and Peter says "There's a red headed black widow with much bigger--" and then he's interrupted. Why? I like Peter Parker. Don't ruin him for me with bullshit like this.

This was actually pretty good again!

The new team of heroes assemble at the Raft (super powered prison) and when criminals start escaping its upto the Avengers to assemble and stop these criminals from escaping and well the new team forms and Spidey comes in too and we see the New Avengers confront Electro and that leads them to Savage Land and there they meet Wolverine and battle their big threat: SAURON! And whole other host of secrets with Shield and whatever Hill is upto and its so much suspense and more!

It was a fantastic beginning to a new era of the Avengers and I love how Bendis includes the popular marvel characters here and has a whole new squad plus focusing on stories with new threats is always exciting and there are so many sub plots and you have so many conflicting personalities that makes this book well awesome! Loved this and the art is so good like Finch at the top of his game here, its a must read book!

Ο Λουκ Κέιτζ, αν κι έχει μια ωραία σκηνή με τον Killgrave και μου άρεσε αρκετά το "I'm not taking anyone's shit" attitude του, πέρα από αυτό δεν είχε κάποιο χαρακτηριστικό που να με κάνει να ενδιαφερθώ παραπάνω για αυτόν.

If you made it this far, congratulations!
'Til next time, take care :) :) :)

Breakout starts the Bendis run on New Avengers. Starting shortly after the events that led to the dissolution of the Avengers, new trouble arises. Electro is paid to engineer a break of the Raft, the super-criminal lockup, in order to get Suaron. During his attempt he frees all the inmates and a combined force of Captain America, Spider-Man, Spider Woman, Daredevil and Luke Cage help contain the breakout. In the follow up we see the nucleus of the new team. Especially when they go to the Savage Land to find Sauron and encounter Wolverine. They also encounter a rogue SHIELD operation. At the end of the Breakout story we see the New Avengers- Iron Man, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Wolverine, Luke Cage and, of course, Captain America.
The artwork is gorgeous and Bendis, as usual, writes a great tale. His trademark humor is present especially with Spiderman. But it is there in other interactions as well. This was a great pick up-I'm a huge Bendis fan and am curious to see where he goes with this bunch of Avengers.

I decided to re-read this book in pursuit of my bone-up mission ahead of Absolute Carnage, and Comic Book Herald mentioned that Cletus had a minor appearance here.

Thank god.

After binging on a ton of Venom and Carnage books from the 90’s (abysmal dialogue, plotting and paper-thin characters fully intact), reading some Bendis in his prime is definitely the salvation I needed.

This books is damn solid. Still shaking off the warts of predecessor Avengers mythology (a little too pointedly I’d say), and trying hard to establish a rhythm with a rag-tag collection of heroes. But throwing them in the deep end of a massive battle, a conspiracy wrapped in a riddle, and making sure we enjoy the ride with A-1 writing?

Sign me up again.

Depending on how well or poorly the 21st century Carnage books play out, I’m likely to return to this whole Bendis Avengers run so’s not to succumb to complete pandemic/social-unrest despair. Bendis is the cure!

(Oh, and spoiler: this is when we first see the top half of Cletus ejected into space. Which becomes important to later Carnage stories.)

I'll admit, while I love comic books, I haven't read a huge amount of these collected anthologies. With that being said, this has probably been my favorite one to date! Taking place after the end of the Avengers and before the events chronicled in House of M, a dire situation at Ryker's Island has brought together an unlikely group of heroes to continue on as the New Avengers. Breakout stars Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man and Luke Cage as the New Avengers and the fight takes them from Ryker's Island to Savage Land in search of who or what is behind a mysterious jailbreak of many dangerous super-villains!

This is a very short read due to its fast pace. Expect to finish this one in an hour or two. There are also many thrills and mysteries to be had! Who has their hand in a shady offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Just exactly what side is Spider-Woman on and who is her mysterious second source of information? Why are there super-villains still alive whose files indicate that they are most certainly dead? What is the real meaning behind the release of Sauron? And will Matt Murdoch ever come around and agree to be part of the new Avengers team? So many of these questions are posed in this anthology and I can't wait to pick up the next volume to find out what happens next!

Well-written and beautifully, though rather darkly, illustrated, I found this to be a superb anthology with the beginnings of a great story arc. Plus, looks like the writers decided to make a team full of jokesters galore with the sheer amount of comic quips to be found within. It definitely makes for a fast, funny and interesting read! I'd absolutely recommend New Avengers: Breakout to seasoned comic fans and those new to the universe alike!

Don't get me wrong, Bendis is one of the most talented writers around. If nothing else, Powers will stand as a testament to that. David Finch does nice work with the art.

My essential problem, which started in the Avengers Disassembled storyline and continues here, is what I call "Brian Michael Bendis Destroys the Marvel Universe."

I grew up with and loved the Marvel characters and concept in my childhood, teens, and a large chunk of adulthood, going back to the 1970s. The work that starts here and continued to build into later storylines such as Civil War and Secret Invasion represents a fundamental shift in the MU that I've just never fully been on board with.

Again, Bendis and Finch are doing very good work here, just not my cup of tea. I will give Bendis props for re-popularizing Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel, but his other takes on the characters and world—not so much.

If you're a fan of Civil War and later era Marvel books, this is for you. If your heart is with Bronze Age Marvel, it might be less of a home run for you.

For someone who's as new to the world of comics as me, this was amazing.
I might change the rating once I've read more to compare this with, but for now this is it, simply because I had so much fun reading this.

This book had everything I'm looking for in a superhero comic: a powerful new team, good and funny dialogue, amazing art and lots of action. The story may not be the newest or deepest ever, but it's super entertaining.
I'm so glad I decided to read this!

This must be my third or fourth reading, and I still love this book.

2 thirds of the holy trinity (Cap, Tony, Thor) put the band back together with Spidey, Spider Woman, and Luke Cage...with an assist from Sentry, and a later arrival of Wolverine. One of the better teams I can recall. Bendis is solid here, and gets the different dynamics of the gang.

Recomendable.

Language: The d*m word and substitute shift characters/symbols to represent profanity.

Sensuality content: No sex on screen or behind closed doors. Precluding it is meant in the "most PC non threatening professional way" the team does comment how Spideywoman looks hot the first time they see her in her skin tight costume instead of her SHIELD agent business attire. Slight spoiler- The team is hung naked and unconscious with all the bathing suit areas obscured from view.

Good job I've been watching the movies and Netflix shows so I knew all the characters! Not a comic reader normally so this made a change. Not all that impressed with the overly sexualised female characterised outfits, no need for that! The story was fun and fast so it gets a 4 for that
