Murder in Plain Sight
3 Stars

When Philadelphia defense attorney Jessica Langdon is assigned the case of a young Amish boy accused of murder, she assumes it will be a simple plea bargain. With little knowledge of the Amish community and threats emerging from all sides, Jessica is forced to rely on the help of local businessman Trey Morgan whose arrogance is eclipsed only by his biased attitudes. Can Jessica overcome the obstacles to uncover the truth and save a boy's life?

As a fan of Linda Castillo's fantastic Kate Burkholder series, I was looking forward to this book due to the similar setting. Unfortunately, it does not live up to expectations as the mystery is predictable, the villain is obvious and the romance lacks zing.

While the information on the Amish is interesting and the descriptions are not as graphic as in Castillo's books, the characterization is one dimensional and the relationship between Jessica and Trey feels forced rather than natural. Not only is their supposed romance very light on the chemistry, but there is an underlying air of mistrust and suspicion that taints almost all of their interactions.

The suspense plot doesn't make much sense and the killer's motivations are not sufficiently explained. There are hints at a wider story arc, but it lacks foundation and it not interesting enough to warrant continuing with the series.

A Marta Perry Amish Mystery ... I have read them or they are on my "Want to Read" list. And I've wanted to read Murder in Plain Sight for some time. You'll note the five-star rating. If, like me, you just hadn't gotten to this one -- it's a MUST READ on your Amish mystery list. And yes, I'll read it again in the future.

May 2024 - re-read again. Still a 5 star book.

Murder in Plain Sight is the first in Marta Perry's Brotherhood of the Raven series. When Jessica Langdon receives the ultimatum to secure a plea deal for an Amish man accused of murder or lose her job, Jessica leaves her high-powered law firm in Philadelphia for Lancaster County. After she meets Geneva Morgan, the friend and sometimes employer of the Amish boy and despite Geneva's son's belligerent attitude, Jessica begins to wonder if Noah might be innocent. Yet so many people seem convinced that he is guilty of murdering a young woman while drunk at a party! The DA wants a big win for his re-election campaign. When someone targets Jessica with increasingly violent threats and attacks, Trey Morgan begins to question his earlier assumptions. He had wanted to protect his mother. Now he must protect Jessica also.

I found this a page-turner. The characters were developing as Jessica faces up to the bullies in her life, and Trey recognizes how short-sighted he has been toward his Amish neighbors.

Jessica Langdon works for a large law firm in Philadelphia but is assigned to represent Thomas Esch, a young Amish man, in nearby Lancaster County. Thomas is accused to killing an English girl at a party. She realizes that her father that is a powerful attorney and judge probably got her the job. That doesn't prevent her from feeling like her position in not very secure. In fact, that is probably why she was given the job in Lancaster County. The case seems to be a no win situation and she is told to just go cut a deal. Since the Amish don't get involved in anything to do with the law, Geneva Morgan hired on with the firm to get someone to represent Thomas. Geneva believes that Thomas is innocent. Geneva and her family own several businesses in Lancaster County and she is able to pay the attorney fees for Thomas' family. As Jessica gets into the case, she begins to agree with Geneva.

Trey Morgan is the son of Geneva and it has fallen onto his shoulders to take over the family businesses since the death of his father of an apparent suicide. Trey feels very protective of his mother and doesn't agree with her decision to hire Jessica. When Jessica gets to town, he doesn't give her a warm welcome. But neither do the townspeople, both English and Amish, want Jessica there. It goes against the Amish's belief to have an attorney to defend them. The other townspeople believe Thomas is guilty. As things heat up and Jessica starts getting threats, Trey helps protect her as does Geneva. When it becomes clear that Jessica is over her head, an old friend of the Morgan family, a local attorney helps Jessica out before he retires.

Marta is so knowledgeable about the Amish and does a great job creating characters that are real and situations that are plausible. The suspense keeps you guessing and turning the pages.

Marta Perry is one of my catch-up authors for this year and I'm surprised that this one slipped past me because I have read the second and third books in The Brotherhood of the Raven series. Though, after reading this one, I know I'm going to be diving into the other books again soon.

Chills and thrills and the sweet, slow burn of both romance and suspense. Very atmospheric and even a little bit eerie at times but Perry doesn't go over the top with frantic scenes of danger and mayhem. Oh, there's danger all right, but she sneaks it up on you..well, on Jessica...in a delightfully shivery fashion.

Excellent pacing -- she writes as if we have all the time in the world to get to the heart of the mystery. Dangling diverse threads, tossing in red herrings and mixing it all up into an edge-of-your-seat read.

The romance is just as beguiling, with a horrendous meet-cute that makes this a bit of an enemies to more love story. Tumultuous definitely sums it up -- in the most thrilling kind of way. I didn't even know if l liked Trey in the beginning. He does grow on you, though, for all his bossy, take-charge blundering. :-)

Love the way the author weaves in Amish fact and fiction as Jessica is introduced to the community for the very first time. Some lovely threads of faith, forgiveness and prayer enrich the story through the lives of some secondary characters. So, while not quite a Christian fiction selection, it definitely has faith elements.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Therese Plummer. Squuueeealll -- I love the way she fine tunes a story, reading as if she relishes the adventure right along with me.

WONDERFUL author...and this is another wonderful book by her! Marta Perry is an automatic buy for me. Highly recommended--it has a great, edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense twist on the contemporary Amish theme that is so popular these days. I'm being very careful not to give anything away, here, but it will be on my keeper shelf!

Wow! Great story line and the mystery had me going to the time it was revealed. I’ve read several of this authors books, but this is the first mystery. It takes place in the heart of Amish country but wasn’t much about the Amish as it is just a good old fashion mystery. I really like her style of writing and loved the book. Two more in the series. I’m starting book 2 right now.

Jessica's career at a big-time law firm may be coming to end, until she is asked to help a young Amish man accused of murder. It is supposed to be a quick case until Jessica starts to think her client might be innocent. With the help of the young man's benefactor, her son and the what seems like the only defense attorney in town, Jessica starts to look for the truth.

I read Perry's newest book, Echo of Danger, last month and was hoping for a suspense thriller like Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series. Unfortunately, it lacked the suspense, grit and character development that Castillo does so well. I decided to give Perry another chance with an older novel, from another series. I went in this time with lower expectations in a sense. I tried to read this one as a cozy mystery with a dash of romance but still the same issues arose for me. In both books the murderer is obvious, but the ride to how the characters figure it out is not exciting enough to keep reading. About midway I was skimming some passages. The characters again were a bit cliched and hard to identify as realistic. There seems to be no chemistry with any of the characters so while I knew Jessica and Trey were going to end up together, I just could not see the motivation behind it. Even their banter was a bit dull. While I finished this book, it was a hard read to get through, a I found it hard to pick back up. I just don't think Perry is the author for me. It's not even that she is not like Castillo, but that her books seem to have too many holes to enjoy.

This was a really good read. The suspense and romance were perfectly placed in the novel and didn't overlap one another. The main character, Jessica, was a really enjoyable character. It will be interesting to see where this storyline goes.

Jessica Langdon a junior associate in her law firm, knows her job is hanging by a thread. When she is called into the office of one of the senior partners, she thinks she is about to be fired, instead he tells her she has been requested to handle a case in which an Amish boy has been accused of murder. The Morgan family, specifically Geneva Morgan, is funding the case, while most of the community believes Thomas Esch is guilty, Geneva believes in his innocence. Trey Morgan, Geneva's son doesn't want his mother involved, he is still suffering from his fathers suicide and is very protective of his mother. Jessica is determined to do her job, and when she starts receiving threats, Trey feels obligated to protect her as well. Feelings start to develop between Jessica and Trey, but they cant let that get in the way of the case. Can Trey protect his mother and Jessica, and how far will the the person go to get Jessica off the case? Will she find the answers she needs to prove Thomas is innocent?

Amish murder mysteries are one of my favorite genre's to read, and boy did Ms. Perry deliver with this one. She keeps the reader in suspense trying to figure out who might be threatening Jessica, and with some clues early on, it was easy to decide that Thomas wasn't a killer, but figuring out who was well, that wasn't so easy.Ms. Perry has an uncanny way of drawing you into the story so completely that you feel as if you are actually a part of the story.Jessica was a very likable character, with her background, you really want her to find a place to belong a sense of family, something she doesn't have with her father. The romance that develops between the couple unfolds slowly, which seems very realistic. It was also great to read a bit about the Amish culture, and how they might have dealt with the murder issue had Geneva not stepped in and hired legal representation.
The ending left several unanswered questions that makes me anxious for the next book in the series, Vanish in Plain Sight, available Spring 2011.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book for review.

I was very excited to read this book! I first read books from Marta Perry many years ago from the Love Inspired Line. I have only recently learned she has written other books not associated with that line and I was very excited to read them so I jumped at the chance to review her new book.
One of the many things I love about Marta Perry is her writing style. She is phenomenal at her descriptions. When I am reading her books I feel like I am right there in the book as I read.

Murder in Plain Sight opens with the death of an English girl and the blame is been put on a young Amish man. Jessica is sent from the big city to help the boy. At first it seems the boy is guilty but slowly things begin to happen that start to show things are not as they appear. Jessica is hired by a local family to help the boy. Trey is the son of the family and he does not want Jessica there. He is still dealing with the tragic suicide of his father and only wants to protect his mother even though his mother hired Jessica. Over time romance begins to bloom and more questions then answers begins to surface about this case.

I will say the climax was a little predictable. I kind of saw it coming. The ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered and will leave the reader excited for the next book in the series Vanish in Plain Sight due out Spring 2011!

Jessica is a struggling lawyer at a prestigious Philadelphia firm. She's more unlucky than bad at her job, but still, she's on pretty thin ice. Then she's sent to Lancaster County to defend an Amish teenager accused of murder. She's supposed to accept a plea bargain, but she becomes convinced her client's innocent. She starts receiving threatening notes and, of course, there's this guy...

This was a really fun read. You'll pretty much see every twist coming (I called the killer in advance--maybe not as early as I could have, but still well in advance of when it's obvious) and that's not always a bad thing. If you are in the mood for something fun to read, possibly under blankets with tea, this is definitely the book for you. Especially if you're fascinated with all things Amish, like I am. :)

This book was pretty good. I am using the words a friend of mine used...it was like Plain Truth but with only the Amish part being significant. I love reading about the Amish culture and this book wasn't heavy on the Christian religious plotlines. This book just gives information about the Amish religion without being preachy. The mystery was set up well and I will continue to read this MYSTERY series even though I realized while I was reading it that Perry is known for her Harlequin Romance novels. Had I known this before I started, I may have judged the book just based on it being a Harelquin and not read it. In this case I definitely learned to not judge a book by it's "cover". 4 stars.

While I am not a huge fan of straight romance novels, add a little murder and mystery and I'm right there.

A young Amish man is accused of murdering an "English" woman. The case looks like a sure thing for the DA. A friend of the Amish family hires a Philadelphia law firm to represent the Amish man. Believing they only need an attorney to work out a plea bargain, the less-favored lawyer, Jessica, is sent to take care of the task. But Jessica finds that the case isn't as open and shut as it appears. Soon, someone wants to scare Jessica away and when the first attempts don't succeed, the anonymous stalker becomes more violent. It doesn't help that Jessica is also falling for the son of the well-meaning woman that hired her.

Very slow-moving and dull, with too much focus on Jessica's and Trey's inner thoughts of each other rather than the legal case. By halfway I didn't care if Thomas was guilty or not. Several years ago I read Plain Truth and it was so much more engaging.

I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and a great read. Basically, reminded me a tad bit of Plain Truth, but that was solely based on the Amish connection and murder. It ended there. I will def. be checking out more MYSTERIES from this author, as she is a romance writer turned mystery writer!

Probably more like 3-1/2 stars but I’m feeling generous so I’m going to bump it up to 4 instead of down to 3. (Goodreads really needs to implement half stars.) This book was enjoyable but nothing special. The murder case was interesting but the romance was a little bland. Maybe I’m just overloaded on romances right now and my timing was wrong for this book. There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with it, it just didn’t wow me in any way. I will likely forget the details soon. Also, the connection to the Amish community felt more ancillary than integral, like it was more an interesting setting than important to the actual case. Yes, the accused was an Amish teen, but really, he could have been anyone. I’m not sorry I read it but I doubt I will read more in this series. The audio narration was nicely done.

So i rarely if never that I can remember have read a book about the Amish, not due to some disdain or anything, but religious books normally dont draw my attention. Color me suprised this crime mystery is about the Amish, and I was pleasantly suprised the inclusion of Amish details, language, and explantion on several facts about their life. And then to discover the Author has roots in the Pennsylvanian Dutch community.

The mystery was intriguing, a framed Amish boy for murder non the less, city lawyer small town threats turned more serious. But the romance in the middle felt cliche and forced, whereas the crime was more interesting and the Amish lifestyle

Murder in Plain Sight by Marta Perry is the first book in The Brotherhood of the Raven series. Jessica Langdon, a big- city attorney, is assigned to the case of an Amish boy accused of murder. She knows little of Amish culture and needs Trey Morgan, a rich businessman, to help her with the case. She has threats coming from the community and acts of violence against her. I decided to try another suspense novel and was a bit disappointed in the lack of intensity to this story. I’m a fan of Marta Perry for her other Amish books and give this a 4-star rating because Linda Castillo set the bar very high for other Amish writers to compete in this genre mho.

This was a good story. It was a murder story and accurate info about the Amish culture, however I purchased it as a "Romance" package choice on Audible and it was just a hint here and there of feelings between characters.

Not enough for a steamy build up and no sex scenes. More of a murder mystery with two people attracted to each other. Good storyline and moved along well, okay narration, just not really in the genre category it is presented to be.

I was a little disappointed in the ending of the book which in turn spoiled the entire reading. I had to go back and reread it twice to see if I missed something.

My questions:
Was that the weakest motive to kill somebody ever? Alien secret groups maybe?
How the hell did Thomas get roofied and dragged to the barn?
Three, how is burning down the cabin coming off as suicide?

The killer reminded me of Steve Buscemi’s character in Billie Madison.

Having discovered this author, I've been looking for more. She writes wonderful suspense stories. The main characters in this one are a lawyer, Jessica Langdon, who comes to defend a young Amish teen, and the Morgan Family, an Englischer family in the community. Marta gives us lots of twists and turns to follow and kept me guessing!

Loved this book. I was not expecting the ending that happened. I do wish that the ending wrapped up a little more neatly. But I like the twists and turns and thrill of this book. I also loved the chemistry between the two main characters. Mysteries with a strong female lead are amazing and this one does not disappoint. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

The story line was interesting. Struggling assistant DA sent to Amish community to defend young man of accused murder. This is the first time reading about Amish being involved in a serious crime. The narrator had a good voice for listening which kept my interest. There was display of loyalty, forgiveness and trusting in God and others.
