This book is a cocked gun pointed at your head. It's Gus's finger on the trigger, from beyond the grave. We don't know quite when he died, but we know where: at a motel desk, working on this book. It seems ghoulish to tell you what page was still there flickering on his computer screen, behind which word his cursor was blinking when the massive coronary struck and killed him. If you read closely, you might be able to hazard a good guess. When his ex-wife Penelope found him, he'd been dead for several days. His head was thrown back, his arms spread wide, his eyes half shut, as if closing them on heaven. I think he would be pleased for you to take this image of him with you as you begin to read.
